Adelaide Newbury- Going for a walk
Subject: Going for a walk
Where: A crowded London street
Who: Adelaide Newbury
Warnings: None, yet
Open to: All

Once again Adelaide had managed to lose her nurses, only this time it had been completely unintentional. The crowded street reminded the young widow of Paris before all the trouble there had started, which in turn reminded her of her dear deceased husband Francis. Her nurses could tell something was wrong as the redhead started looking around frantically. But before any of them could grab her she went tearing off down the street, chasing a man who she did not know. Or at least that's how it looked to them. In her troubled mind she had seen Francis and was now hurrying to catch up with him.

"Monsieur!" she screamed, only a few yards behind him. Suddenly however she tripped over the hem of her dress, throwing her hands out to keep her face from colliding with the stone ground as she fell flat on her stomach. When she finally stood and brushed herself off the man was gone and she suddenly couldn't remember what she had been running after. Nervously she looked around for her nurses.

"Comment...?" Lucrète had just set off on a walk, eager to enjoy the first bit of sunshine she had seen since setting foot in this wretched country. She found it relatively peaceful, as she was used to the bustling of a busy street. She was therefore quite startled when an evidently disturbed young woman rushed past her and fell to the ground a few yards away. Lucrète stared, dumbfounded, for a few seconds while the woman stood up, then rushed over her.

"Madame!" She gasped, looking her over. "Vous-Are you alright?"

Adelaide continued to brush herself off, straightening the skirt of her light blue dress. When she heard the sound of somebody addressing her she turned to look quickly, trying to remember what she had been doing. "Yes, yes, thank you, Madame," she said, rather hurriedly as she looked around again.

"It happens a lot, do not worry." It was true, she did manage to fall a lot and now the pain was so familiar to her that it didn't even phase the young widow.

Lucrète looked at her strangely. "Are you sure, Madame? You took quite a fall... Perhaps you should sit down." She found Adelaide's distracted air most disconcerting.

Adelaide nodded a little, letting her lifeless gaze settle upon the other woman. "I often am clumsy like that," she said softly, "It is no surprise that it happened." Pain was something she had grown used to, not only physically, but mentally as well.

"But are you alright?" Lucrète asked again, feeling more and more certain that she was not. "You seem distracted. Perhaps you should sit down..." Lucrète spied a nearby tea shop. Perhaps that would be comforting. After all, these English did seem to love their tea. "Why don't we go in there while you collect yourself?"

Adelaide did not find it strange that the other woman had asked her the same question several times already. Instead she just nodded her head once more. "Yes, I am alright," she said softly. She was used to her nurses constantly asking her how she felt and if she wanted to sit down. Her lifeless eyes glanced over to the tea shop and she nodded a little more. "Yes, that would be lovely," she said softly. She gave one more quick look around, wondering where whatever she had been running after had gone.

"Are you looking for someone?" Lucrète asked, leading her into the tea shop.

Adelaide followed, nodding her head a little more. "Yes," she said faintly, turning her attention back to her. "Someone.." she added weakly, unable to recall who. This was common for her though, as her past had not been kind to her sanity.

"Someone who?" Lucrète frowned. She led Adelaide into the tea shop and spotted a small table in front of the shop window, so Adelaide could see whoever she was looking for, or they could find her. "Let's just sit down for a moment here, chère. You can look for your person here, yes? And we'll have a nice cup of tea to calm your nerves."

Suddenly she remembered. Chère. Francis had called her that, before his death. Why had she been looking for him? It did not make sense, and yet, she knew that she had been. She could remember the entire thing and that man, who she had been chasing. Quickly Adelaide glanced out the window, hoping to see him. He was gone, though. So were her nurses. "Someone I know I will never find," she said finally as she turned her attention back to Lucrète.

"I...see." Lucrète said slowly, eagerly accepting the distraction of two cups of tea brought over to them. She was beginning to get a sense of Adelaide's mental instability. "What is your name, Madame?"

Adelaide thanked the server for the tea before distracting herself for a moment as she added a small amount of sugar. Finally she looked back up, letting her hollow gaze linger on Lucrète. "Adelaide Newbury, Madame," she said softly. "And yourself?" She didn't keep her eyes on the other woman much longer, as she suddenly glanced out the window once more, a hopeful look on her face before she sighed.

"Lucrète Vernet," she replied, sipping the tea. "May I ask," and she proceeded to do so quite pointedly, "Why you keep looking when you say you will never find who you are looking for?"

Her question caught the young widow off guard. Reluctantly she forced herself to turn her attention away from the window as she looked back to Lucrète. "One can never be too hopeful," Adelaide said softly, even though she knew deep down that she could hope as much as she liked and still Francis would never come back to her. None of her husbands would.

"I find it best not to put my hope in people, Madame. They tend to disappoint you," Lucrète replied. The tone of her voice was not harsh, but the reply was abrupt.

Adelaide frowned slightly, a look of curiosity coming across her usually expressionless face. "Then what do you put your hope in, Madame?" she inquired gently.

"An ideal," she said quietly. "People may disappoint. They may be weak, corrupt, cruel. But ideals are perfect." She smiled gently at Adelaide. The woman might be disturbed, but she felt pity for her.

"But people don not always disappoint," Adelaide said gently. "Not all people are weak, corrupt, and cruel." She had met her share of cruel people in the world, she had even been married to one. But Adelaide had also been married to men she thought perfect. "There are perfect people," she added. "You just have to look for them."

(I appologize, I was caught up in a move and without internet access for two days to even say I was gone.)

"Tell me," Lucrète said with a slight smirk, "Who are these perfect people you know?"

(It's okay! I completely understand.)

Adelaide did not notice the smirk on the woman's face. "Well, I cannot think of any who are alive anymore," she admitted softly. "But my first husband, he was perfect. And so were my second and my third, Madame," she explained. Or at least, they had been perfect in her opinion. Even when they were beating or controlling her.
