Subject: A visit.
Where: Dr Daniel Perkins home/surgery.

Daphne was let out of the public carriage she had bought a ticket to ride. Looking at the long path as the carriage rode away, she listened to the fading sound of the horses hooves as she walked up the drive towards the home of her close friend Dr. Daniel Perkins. The bottom of her dress already filthy around the hem from the mud she had to step through along the way, but it didn't matter. Daniel wouldn't care what she looked like, he would probably like it more is she was completely disheveled and he could take care of her. Thinking on that, Daphne smiled under her bonnet.

After a healthy sum of minutes of walking, finally the residence of Dr. Perkins was in sight. Of course, the entire time she made her way, she made sure she wasn't being watched or followed. That was the only bad thing about seeing her friend. He treated everyone. Of course, most of the people that Daphne interacted with wouldn't recognize her out of her disguises, so it wasn't that big of a deal. But still, she wasn't going to take any chances.

Finally reaching the steps, she lifted her dress slightly so she wouldn't trip as she made her way up them and stopped at the door. Straightening herself as much as she could, she knocked lightly on the door.

Daniel was adjusting the cravat around his neck, preparing to leave that afternoon to visit his father and chief of surgery as he went to answer the door. He had spent the morning fussing around his bag of tricks and the last thing he needed was his maid Yvette, however well she meant, to start rearranging everything. His conversation with her was fast and completely in French, it being the only language she could speak, and continued all the way to the front door.

"Non, Yvette, je le ferai! Je le ferai!" he called, unlocking the catch before he found himself face to face with Daphne. His eyes widened at the sight of her, mouth dropping in shock but he quickly recovered from his surprise and positively beamed. "Daphne!"

Hearing the commotion through the door, Daphne had to stiffle a laugh and managed to keep a straight face when he swung open the door. Seeing the maid scurrying around inside the house, it all seemed like a comedy stage play. She couldn't help but return the smile as she curtsied, really just mocking the manners that a woman must follow. She and Daniel had known each other for quite some time and the normal just didn't work for them.

"Hello, Daniel," she greeted him back, stepping forward for a welcomed embrace. "Oh, it's so good to see you! I hope I didn't catch you in the middle of something."

Daniel hugged her close, the smile still on his face as he was unable to wipe it off. He felt euphoric that Daphne was there to see him, it was such a nice visit! He had always held her in high esteem and Daphne was certainly always welcome. Ushering her in Daniel closed the door behind her, leaving the cravat alone to concentrate on his guest.

"No, no! Well yes, actually, I was about to set off for my father's but that can wait," he said, meaning every word. "How have you been, what do I owe the pleasure?"

"Bonjour," she greeted Yvette, Daniel's maid, as she entered the house. She turned back around to face him and she couldn't help but catch that infectious smile he had etched on his face. Looking down at the mess of a cravat he had wrapped around his neck, she stepped closer to fix it for him.

"I'm fine. Just thought I'd come and see my favorite Doctor," she looked up from her handiwork and connected her eyes with his. When she was finished, she stepped back. "And if you want to go to your father's house, I can go with you. I don't mind."

"Ah, no," Daniel disagreed, shaking his head which probably did not help Daphne's attempts to straighten his attire and shift it right back. "I do not think it advisable that you go it is - a depressing matter concerning my brother and a few cases he may have severely mishandled. It will be boring. To be frank I would much rather spend the afternoon with you. Oh I am so excited that you are here!"

He gave a little jump to show it before he continued to grin. His cheeks would grow sore soon! "What can I help you with? Anything? Nothing?"

"Alright, very well," she sighed, teasing him about him not wanting to put her through anything that may bore or depress her. She giggled uncharacteristically, stimulated obviously by his over-giddiness to see her. It felt good to be wanted so much. Definitly a confidence booster.

"I am excited to be here too. To be honest, I have missed you terribly and I came here to pretend I needed a check up. But you would have known better the moment you realized I was healthy," she reached over and rubbed his arm up and down, in a comforting, friendly way. "If you want to though, you can still do that," she smirked.

Daniel blinked. The combination of her touching his arm and her cheeky insinuation was enough to make him blush, and blush he did! He gaped, then tried to form words which did not happen, and grinned sheepishly. "Daphne you will be the death of me," he chuckled, shaking his head rather embarrassedly then gestured to lead her into the living room. In truth he would not have minded checking her over just to be sure, but he was definitely not going to do it now.

"I have missed you too. Would you like a drink? Something to eat?"

Daphne gave him a saucy little wink, loving to wind him up like that. It was so easy and fun. She follwed him into the living room and chose her seat, her eyes smiling at Daniel the whole time. He amused her to no end. Folding her hands in her lap, she pursed her lips when he mentioned food and drink.

"Actually, I am quite famished. I would love something," she nodded and tilted her head, looking around the room. She had seen this room too many times to count and everytime something new caught her eye. Pictures, flowers, a new trinket. She removed her hat and sat it beside her on the sofa.

"Yvette!" he called, hoping she was still around to hear it while he poured them both a drink. If he were younger, or if he indeed knew that she could not see him, he might have been dancing a jig while he did so. To have one of his dearest and most beloved friends back in his home was a delight and a much needed relief from the stresses of the city.

"Here you are - wine to celebrate your return!" he beamed, handing her a glass. "And hopefully it will not be too short. YVETTE!"
