Lady Gwendolyn's Political Salon
Subject: A Whig Salon
Where: Lady Gwendolyn's salon in Mayfair
Who: Lady Gwendolyn Linley, Fox and Burke as NPCs to set the scene
Warnings: None
Open to: All

As always, the doors to her salon were open to anyone who could convince the footman to let them in. Lady Gwendolyn glided from group to group, serving up smiles and coffee, but always returning to the main group in the center of the salon. That group, comprised of the more influential Whig politicians, had been debating England's response to the French Revolution for the past ten minutes and had not agreed on anything but the excellence of Lady Gwendolyn's tea cakes.

"It is the greatest thing to happen this century," Fox argued. Charles Fox, the leader of the Whig opposition, was a great, shaggy bear of a man, who had stopped paying attention to his personal hygiene years ago. "It is the greatest thing to happen to Europe! How can we, the people's party, fail to support it and recognize it?"

"Because it has gone too far," exclaimed Burke in evident exasperation. Though also a Whig, he was a more outspoken critic of the French Revolution than any of the Tory majority in the House of Commons. "It may once have been about liverty, but look at France now! They have dismantled their entire society and anarchy springs up in its place!"

Lady Gwendolyn drifted away from the main group as the footman opened the door. Charming Smile Number One, Curtsy Number Three- "Welcome to my salon."

Harry returned her smile with one of his own, and a bow. "Lady Linley. Forgive me lateness, I am afraid there was a matter of some urgency..." He said, before he glanced around at those present inside the room, most deep in loud discussion.

His eyes shifted back to her, another grin flickering onto his face, and his voice drops low, leaning to breath his next words close to her ear, "Mr Fox, my lady, is known in some circles for a serious of unwise investments in the Americas. Failed sugar plantations, as I remember." He leans away, wiping the smile from his face, looking serious once more. "Thank you again for inviting me."

She almost shivered as Mr. Fisher leaned closer to her, his breath stirring the tendrils of hair around her ear. The man knew what he was doing. She had to give him credit for that.

"I entirely forgive your tardiness in light of such delightful news," Lady Gwendolyn replied, honestly smiling at him. "I had no idea Fox was involved with sugar plantations. After all that fuss about boycotting sugar to end the slave trade too...." She held out a hand to him. "Come now, Mr. Fisher, I should thank you for accepting my invitation. Would you care for coffee, tea, or something stronger?"

"Very few people are aware, my dear lady, only those of us who were directly involved in managing his funds." He says, shrugging, nodding his head at the man in question when Fox turned to look for his hostess. And Harry couldn't resist a smile as the man blanched, and then quickly turned his head back to the conversation.

He smiled, taking her hand, "A cup of tea would be wonderful, Lady Linley. It is a little too early in the day for another else. But I will admit that those cakes do look delicious..."

Lady Gwendolyn was beginning to grow quite exasperated at herself for her now marked inability to tell just what sort of business Mr. Fisher ran. It was obviously rather shady, but the line about managing his funds... was he in the East India Company? That would be a very viable way for him to know her father.

She seated him at a table behind the still-shaken Fox and gestured at a servant to bring a tea service. "How do you take your tea, Mr. Fisher?" Lady Gwendolyn asked, sitting across from him.

Harry couldn't resist. He was still sat in hearing distance to the old politician, and it was the perfect opportunity. "My dear Lady Linley, I only take my tea with sugar." There was a visible flinch of Fox's shoulders, but he, wisely, did not turn around. Harry, meanwhile, could not surprise the grin tugging at the corners of his mouth.

Emilie arrived right when she had told Gwendolyn she would. She looked stunning in celedon green silk, carrying a mahogany tea chest filled to the top with green tea her father had just brought into the country.

"My dear, how ravishing you look!" She air-kissed Emilie's cheeks and stepped back to admire her dress. "That shade of green suits you very well. Would you like me to take your chest for you?"

"The chest is for you, my dear."Emilie replied, offering the chest and it's small, shiny, brass key to her friend. She looked around casually, then said, in a near whisper, "Oh, your cook has outdone himself, Gwendolyn! And your company is, as always, immensely interesting!"

"Oh how kind you are!" She took the chest and the key with pleasure and, setting the chest on an end table, opened it. "Green tea! We haven't had that for what feels like an age. I expect you shall grow very tired of hearing this, but you do spoil me so."

Lady Gwendolyn motioned at a servant to take the chest and turned back to Emilie. "Oh, hasn't he? He's such a dab hand at pasteries. Would you care for anything?"

"A glass of wine would be just the thing! And as for spoiling you, I only give you as much as you deserve, you are such a dear friend."

"Mother has been trying to train our new cook. His pastries are so dry! But he is an expert at soups and sauces, and you know how poppa likes sauces. She is thinking of sending our youngest spit boy to Antoine Beauvilliers', in Paris, to learn cooking so I can take him to my new home once I am married. At least I will have decent food."

"So many handsome gentlemen, Gwendolyn! Do introduce me to a few, I have been away from London so long now I am quite behind on my names and faces!"
She smiled prettily, looking around for Msr Belmont, knowing against all hope he would not be in this crowd.

The footman knew well enough not to argue with Lord Eward and so when he saw the man approach he was immediately granted access. "A lesson well learned," he mumbled as he passed, but changed his dark demeanor to a bright smile on seeing the hostess.

"Lady Gwendolyn, please, your smile is welcome enough and there will be no curtsey for me. Good gracious, am I late? Or am I on time to debate and annoy those stuffy Whigs?"

"Lord Eward," Lady Gwendolyn said, smiling, "you know as well as I that you are always on time and everyone else is just abominably early. You know, Mr. Burke still goes speechless and chokes whenever anyone mentions your name. What ever did you do to him last time you were here?"

Katherine had once again been abandoned at the door by Miles, off to make conversation with his various female companions, and she hoped for her own sake that he'd choose one soon so there wouldn't be so many for her to keep track of. She always enjoyed visiting Lady Gwendolyn's salon, mostly because her fiance almost never did, and it offered her the chance to be perfectly opinionated without much consequence; that was, after all, the goal.

As she entered the salon, Katherine allowed her eyes to wander and see who else had arrived. Various familiar faces did not hold her attention, not until she saw in the center of the room Eward Mountford-Miles, and the sight of him made her face go absolutely white. She had not seen him in the few days since...well, since she'd last seen him, and admittedly it was a purposeful avoidance. Perhaps she'd find luck and not be forced to discuss what had happened that night to his face.

Smiling at the hostess when she greeted her, Katherine replied, "It is always a pleasure, Lady Gwendolyn. Thank you kindly for having me."

"Oh nonsense," Lady Gwendolyn said, waving away Katherine's thanks. "I ought to thank you for coming and giving us all the pleasure of your company. The Earl of Derby was just telling me how pleased he was to be able to count you as a member of his acquaintance. You have such a way of phrasing your opinions! Second only to your brother the novelist, really."

Having noticed Katherine's reaction to Lord Eward, she gently steered her in the opposite direction. "Shall I get you tea or coffee?"

"Indeed, it is a pleasure to be here," Katherine responded cordially. Blushing just enough for it to be becoming, Katherine added with a touch of humour, "I am sure that I will have to indulge his lordship's opinion of me then! And offer your flatteries to my brother, should he ever break himself apart from his gaggle of ladies."

Katherine was not sure if Lady Gwendolyn had exactly noticed her rather lengthy, blanching look at Eward, but took advantage of that the hostess had offered her refreshments in another part of the room. "None, thank you, though I have heard quite a number of good things about your tea cakes."

Lady Gwendolyn glanced over at Miles Rochester, hemmed in on all sides by panniers and flounced skirts. "I wish you good luck with that, Miss Rochester. I certainly would never be brave enough to attempt so difficult a task."

They arrived in front of the elegantly arranged table, the footman behind it snapping to attention. "What can Jonathan get you, Miss Rochester? The trifle is very good, though I do believe my cook outdid himself with the tea cakes."

Katherine cast a wary glance at her brother, and despite herself was somewhat amused, before turning back to Lady Gwendolyn. "I call it not bravery, Lady Gwendolyn, but determination. I'll not let a flattering opinion of me go to waste."

She smiled at the display set out at the table. "I shall have to indulge in a tea cake, then!" Katherine said rather happily, nodding to the footman. As he moved about fetching it for her, Katherine turned to the hostess. "You are well then?" she questioned of Lady Gwendolyn. "It takes a good deal of energy to host anything of this nature these days," she mused, motioning to the rest of the salon with a gloved hand.

Parties were hardly the only place politics went on in this damp country and Sabana could hardly wait until the next one of those to push her advantage. She was still new within the country and that made her an interesting commodity and gave her the perfect opportunity to promote her agenda - in this case gaining Mercedes Dupont an English title in repayment for her rescue.

She crossed the floor, the bright violet skirts of her dress dancing around her heels, intent on introducing herself to the salonnière and making alliances here within the political elite.

"Madam, you have outdone yourself." Sabana said, gesturing around the room. "This is quite a glittering gathering and I am sure I can credit it all to you."
