"Yes," Mary said with a nod. The woman was older, but carried herself with dignity. It reminded her of her mother or Isobel. "I have stood on the bow of a boat and felt incredibly small as I looked out at the ocean, but it is nothing compared to this. I feel insignificant standing here." She gestured to the window with her free hand. At least the nebulae were beautiful with their colors of deep red and blue.

The comment brought to mind the shore about an hour away from her childhood home on Alderaan, and her chest tightened. It was funny, even all these years later, how such off-hand comments could bring up those memories like this. Leia nodded. "It's a different feeling, being in space versus being on the water. And yet there are similarities." She followed the other woman's gaze and nodded.

"I did not grow up on the shore, but we took trips from England to visit my mother's relatives in America. That was a long boat ride." Weeks. Sometimes she would be sick at the beginning, but then she would improve. "Those are places on Earth," Mary said. "If you are familiar with Earth." Mary had been here long enough to know that not everyone was.

"I grew up on a lake, and the sea wasn't very far," Leia said, but that was about all that she would probably say about that. The memories lingered too long at the edge of her memory, and she didn't like it. Of course, she didn't want them to go away entirely, yet she didn't want to be consumed by them either.

Leia shook her head. "I'm not, other than what I've read here in the database. I grew up on Alderaan, though have spent time in many other places since."

"I haven't heard of Alderaan," Mary admitted. There were a lot of places that people were from that she hadn't heard of though. "You are not a member of the crew, are you?" The other woman seemed comfortable in space at least.

Leia wasn't surprised, knowing what she did about where she was here and what that meant for the galaxy she knew and called home. "No, I'm not a member of this crew," she said with a wry smile. She regarded the other woman for a moment.

Mary hadn't thought so, but then the crew was huge. She had only met a few of them.

"You seem comfortable up here," Mary said. "More comfortable than I am. Space travel does not exist in the year that I am from."

At that, Leia looked at her, surprised, her refilled glass of whiskey halfway to her lips. "Doesn't exist?" she repeated in disbelief. She had never known anything but the ability to travel from planet to planet, even to the Outer Rim or further away. To not have that ability was shocking to her, though she supposed there were planets in her galaxy as well where beings chose not to utilize space travel.

Mary shook her head. "Quite recently we figured out how to fly above land, but not so high as space yet."

She felt terribly primitive whenever she talked about that. Most other people seemed to come from a place where space travel was possible, even if it wasn't commonplace yet.

It sounded like mythological history to Leia, but she supposed anything was possible when people were coming in from all of the known universe and, well, beyond. "Then being in space like this must be incredibly disconcerting for you," she said.

"It is," Mary said with a slight laugh, glad that somebody seemed to understand. "I... haven't really been comfortable since I arrived here."

Everything was nice and her needs were met, but there was something so sterile about the environment. It didn't seem like home. The lack of an outside was hurting her too.

Leia nodded. She had been put in many an uncomfortable situation in her days, and she didn't like seeing other people in them. "Is there anything that might make you more comfortable?" she asked.

Mary shrugged her shoulder and sighed. "Jadzia is working on some sort of... room that will supposed look like my home. She says that it's going to be very realistic, almost like I'm back there."

It was hard for her to believe that such a thing would be possible. Perhaps it would be like a film, and she would get to see a large version of Downton on a screen. Even that would be nice.

"She mentioned that," Leia murmured. "I think in some ways, it would hurt more to be able to go back to something you've lost." Perhaps she was projecting. If there was truly a way to recreate Alderaan out of her own memories, would she want to see it?

"Perhaps... but I should like to think that I have not completely lost my home."

Mary hadn't given up on the idea of them finding a way to send everyone home yet. She couldn't, because then she would have nothing to hope for and her life would be miserable indeed. She had to hold on to the idea that she would see Downton and her son again someday.

Mary's comment shook Leia out of her thoughts of Alderaan and she smiled, a little sadly, at Mary. "Of course, I didn't mean to imply that you did," she said. But she still held her chin up a bit, her posture straight in the way she'd been taught as a young princess. "I did lose my home, many years ago," she said after a long moment, by way of explanation. "There are other places I wouldn't mind recreating here, but Alderaan, I don't think, is one of them." She couldn't help but glance sideways over toward Luke. "Though perhaps we could try and convince my brother to recreate the planet he grew up on." The last thing Leia thought Luke would want to do is set foot on Tatooine's sand again, whether imaginary or not.

"I'm sorry to hear that," Mary said. She noticed the posture and it made her smile to herself. Finally, someone who appeared to have been raised similarly to her.

"Your brother is here?" Mary couldn't help but follow Leia's glacnce across the room, trying to figure out which one he was. "And he grew up on a different planet than you?"

Leia nodded and motioned over to the bearded man on the other side of the lounge. "Twin brother, actually, though this place is odd enough that we're not here from the same time, so I guess we aren't the same age anymore. Luke. And he did. We were separated at birth but we've had a good few decades since finding each other." Leia smiled wryly. Good times and bad, yes, but he was at least always there as part of her whole.

"How tragic," Mary said, "but also how fortunate that you found each other again."

And how odd that they apparently came from different times and were now different ages. Sometimes this place was incredibly difficult for Mary to wrap her head around.

"Forgive me, I should introduce myself. Lady Mary Crawley." She held out a hand to her.

"It was inevitable, I think sometimes." Leia thought about the circumstances that had prompted them to meet again, and everything that had happened since.

She smiled and shook her hand firmly. "Senator Leia Organa," she introduced before she thought better and caught her use of that title. She had only given it up a few weeks before after all.

"Senator?" Mary asked with a smile. "That is an honor. Technically we don't have senators where I am from, but of our equivalent, very few of them are women. Not all women can even vote yet."

She sounded vaguely like her sister, the suffragette. Sybil probably would have been proud.

[ooc. reposting this because my phone clearly changed matriarchal to patriarchal and the entire meaning of her comment is lost because of that autocorrect.]

Leia had spent years, her entire life, really, studying galactic politics. "There are still some worlds and societies where I'm from that are like that. My homeworld, Alderaan, was a matriarchal society, so that has always been a difficult concept for me to grasp." Her mother was queen, and Leia might have been one day herself, if she hadn't gone into the senate, or if Alderaan hadn't been destroyed.

She smiled at the other woman. "It's unfair for me to use the title anymore. I resigned just recently, but it's a hard habit to break. I've had the same problem with every title I've had throughout my life, really." Princess, rebel, senator, now General...

"A princess is an even greater honor," Mary said, bowing her head slightly. She knew how to address monarchs in her country, though not necessarily ones from other planets. "It sounds like you've had quite a life."

Leia waved a hand a bit. "I haven't considered myself a princess in decades," she said. "A full life, sure, but an overwhelming one too. I don't know what to do with myself here."
