WHO: Mary Crawley and Lucifer Morningstar
WHEN: 226403.16
WHERE: Her room, D-18
SUMMARY: Lucifer comes to visit Mary and sees her pictures from home.
WARNINGS: TBD?

Mary was fortunate enough to be blessed with a box of photographs from home. It was as if whatever force had brought her here knew that her family was important to her and that she would be lost if she couldn't see them. Pictures weren't the same as talking to them, but they were better than nothing.

Usually when she felt homesick, she pulled out the box and sat in her room to look at them. Today, since Jadzia was off doing whatever she did, Mary had brought the box out to the table in the common area, where she sat looking through them while drinking a cup of tea. Most of the pictures were still in the box, though two were sitting on the table: one of Mary with her son and one from her wedding day.

A sudden knock on the door startled her and she got up to answer it. After the door slid open and she noticed that it was Lucifer on the other side, she gave a little sigh. She still didn't quite know how to feel about him. "Hello, Mr. Morningstar. May I help you?"

Mary exhaled slowly through her nose. For the devil, he certainly had a patented 'lost puppy dog' look.

"Christians would say that your father is behind everything," she replied. "I would not want my son here, so I am quite glad that he is not, even if I must be separated from him." There was a short pause before she continued. "Ask me again, politely, if I will show you my photographs."

"Yes, well they would be wrong," Lucifer replied. "But that's neither here nor there at the moment."

That was at least the second, if not the third time Lady Mary had surprised him, and though he didn't say anything, he regarded her with a bit more curiosity before nodding. "Would you please show me your photographs?" he asked, hoping she wasn't the sort who would take an hour to describe each one, but realizing that he'd worked himself into a corner.

Mary considered herself a Christian, though not a particularly religious one. She didn't feel like discussing theology at the moment either though.

After Lucifer asked politely, Mary sat down next to him. She pulled the pictures out of the box that they were in and spread them on the table, letting him ask about whichever ones he wished. Picking up the one of she and her husband that had already been on the table, she handed it to him.

"That is my late husband, Matthew."

Lucifer looked at the photos, and did ask for names and occasionally another question, but mostly he felt the need to make up for obviously interrupting her when she was probably feeling homesick.

The wedding photo, however, peaked his interest. "That wasn't that long ago," he mentioned. "How...?"

"Automobile accident," Mary answered. "The day after our son was born."

Obviously she didn't enjoy discussing it much. Mary had accepted Matthew's death and was ready to move on from it, but she would never be fully over something like that. He had been the love of her life, the only one that she felt had truly understood her.

"Right..." Lucifer said, looking at her, trying to work out how the woman next to him was as good as she seemed to be, given everything. Humans were so curious to him, how the same thing could break someone, or in Mary's case, seemingly make her stronger.

It had broken her for about six months. She was a zombie, a shell of her former self. Then one day she realized that she couldn't go on like that anymore. Life wasn't worth living if she was going to be miserable. She had a son to take care of and an estate to save for him so that when he was Lord Grantham he would still be able to live at Downton. It was what Matthew would have wanted.

She stroked her thumb over Matthew's face in the picture, then picked up the one of she and George decorating the Christmas tree. "He is the very image of his father. Matthew's mother says that George looks just like he did at that age."

"I can see that, but there's some of you in him too," Lucifer mentioned.

He paused for a moment and then added, "I'm sorry." His words were genuine, but they still came out sounding a bit awkward because he had very little experience with actual emotions and caring about someone other than himself. But he found, looking at her looking at her photos, that he really was sorry that she found herself here rather than back home, with her son.

"Thank you," Mary replied, appreciating his effort. She wasn't great with emotions either. Mostly she hated being seen as weak in any way. "It was three years ago. I'll never be truly over it, but I am ready to move on with my life."

"Well, life seems to want to force that on you so it's good you're on the same page?" Lucifer replied.

He had a lot of admiration for her, but no real way of expressing it. "I'm glad that if I'm going to be stuck here, so are you," he offered, thinking immediately that it probably wasn't quite what he meant to say.

Mary furrowed her brow slightly. "Why do you say that?" It seemed oddly personal. She wasn't quite sure where she stood with Lucifer. He annoyed her, but she also liked him. He was the devil, but also a person with feelings. He was cocky and brash, but also handsome and dashing. Mary didn't know what the 'right' way to feel about him was.

"Because you're rather remarkable, wouldn't you say?" Lucifer asked.

She knew that she was beautiful and had been told that her entire life. She was clever too. Remarkable? Mary wasn't quite sure about that.

"It's flattering that you think so," she replied.

While she knew that not many women could touch her physical looks, she also knew that her personality sometimes left something to be desired. She could be formal, and cold, and competitive. Not the sort of thing she felt made up 'remarkable'.

"I don't lie," Lucifer replied. "But I've probably taken up enough of your time, haven't I?"

"You keep insisting that, but why shouldn't the devil lie?"

As for taking up her time, she found that she didn't mind much. There wasn't anything else that she had planned on doing. At least Lucifer was interesting company - not that she might actually say that to his face.

"Why should I?" he asked, countering her question with a question of his own. "I mean I suppose if you believe the stories that I roam the earth, looking to cause otherwise innocent people to end up in hell, it might make sense. But given that my job was to torture all of those people, wouldn't that just be giving myself more work?"

He frowned. "But I don't lie because my father has always tried to discredit me and I won't make it that easy for him."

Mary was still trying to reconcile her image of the devil with the man that sat next to her. It was difficult to do. Perhaps that was why she struggled so much around him. She still wasn't sure if she could trust him.

"If you do not lie, then tell me what your interest in me is."

Her tone was quiet and curious, not accusatory. What did he want with her?

"Well you're fascinating," Lucifer said. "You carry yourself with grace despite everything you've been through, you've found yourself floating through space, away from your family and yet you still have kindness and compassion which, trust me, are not the most common of traits to begin with. You're a product of your time and yet your ideas are more advanced than the society you came from. And you're interesting to talk to," he added. "Among other things."

"You think I'm kind?" Mary asked. "Have I managed to trick you?"

It wasn't that she was terribly unkind, just that wasn't a word usually used to describe her, even if Edith was the person who saw the truly ugly side she had.

"So you... want me to be your friend?" She asked, trying to clarify that.

"No," Lucifer replied. "Or at least you haven't shown me anything that would make me take that back. Instead, you gave me a second chance after our first meeting, when you freaked out once you found out who I was." He smirked at that memory. "And since then you've surprised me."

But then his expression changed, and he looked at her, puzzled. "I sort of thought we were friends now?" he asked. Not that he had many friendships in the past to base that assumption on.

"We are," Mary said. "I mean, if you want to be."

Perhaps it was her ego, but it seemed for a moment like he was angling for something more. But then there was his Detective, who he seemed to love and did not wish to be unfaithful to.

He was a handsome and charming man, though Mary still had doubts about doing anything intimate with him.

"Good then," Lucifer replied cheerfully. "That gives me plenty of time to learn if you have indeed been tricking me since we met and you're really a horrible person." He flashed her a smile, and then stood up.

She smiled back. "I don't think I am, unless you ask my sister." The two of them had years of bad blood though.

Mary stood as well. "I suppose you're welcome whenever you'd like then. I... did not have a lot of friends back home."

The friendships she did have were mostly male, as she got on with men better than women.

Lucifer frowned at the mention of siblings. "Well, if you ask mine, they'll give you a whole range of opinions about me. But that's a conversation for another day."

He nodded after that, adding, "You're welcome at my place any time, Lady Mary. Or if you ever... need anything?"

Mary showed him to the door, finding that she really did like his company. He was going to flirt with her and she would flirt back. It didn't mean anything. It was simply their personalities. Being naturally flirtatious, it would help Mary to get over the fact that he was the devil and any discomfort that came with that.

"Of course. I shall let you know." They paused at the door. "I'm glad you came to visit, Lucifer. Though please do ask next time before picking up my things." Mary gave him a smile.

"Duly noted," Lucifer replied, though he made no promises that he'd follow that request. Instead he just smiled back at her, before heading back to his room. He still had plenty of time to kill, and he thought about making a formal request to open the bar earlier.
