WHO: Mary Crawley & Tom Paris
WHEN: 226406.13 Evening
WHERE: Deck 5 Lounge
SUMMARY: Tom meets a real life woman from the 20th century
WARNINGS: Probably none

Agreeing to meet with a man who was fascinated with the 20th century probably wasn't going to do much for Mary and her feelings of being obsolete aboard this ship. At least Tom had made her feel a bit more at ease by saying that it was a ruse to ask her for a drink. She admired that honesty, and the fact that someone on the ship wanted to have a drink with her. After being dumped, it was a nice feeling, even if she wasn't really sure about dating any more Starfleet personnel. Not that she saw this as any sort of date. It was just a drink.

Mary arrived early and ordered a martini before getting a table for them. She smiled at Tom when he approached. "Mr. Paris," she said with a nod.

"I have," she admitted. Obviously everything was completely different from what she was used to and it had even been frightening at first. Since then, she would like to think that she had progressed, though she had some personal setbacks which had halted her advance. Mary found herself receding back into herself and her old manner of dress. It was more comfortable there. She felt that at least if she were rejected, she would be rejected for who she really was, not someone she was pretending to be. "It is... a lot to take in."

"I can only imagine. We found people in the Delta Quadrant who had been taken by aliens and frozen. They were from the 1930's. It was quite the culture shock for them when we woke them." And, he admired both them, and his current companion for their ability to adjust. It was never going to be easy. Just like it wouldn't have been easy for him to go back to their time, either.

"Is there anything you specifically miss from home? I could always program you a holoprogram to give you a home away from home. If you like?"

His mentioning of finding people from the 30s made her wish that more of them would arrive on this ship. Then she maybe wouldn't feel so alone or out of place. Was it selfish to wish that someone from home would join her?

Mary took a sip of her drink. "Jadzia actually has already done a very realistic simulation of my family home. It's quite remarkable. You're welcome to visit if you'd like. It's called Downton Abbey." She tried not to spend too much time in there because she knew that it would only make things worse for her if she did.

"I believe you wanted to ask me some questions about life in my time?" she asked.

"Well, that must be nice. I'd love to visit. If that's not too much trouble" And, he really would love to. It would likely be a tad more realistic than the 20th century holo programmes he'd created over the years.

Tom sipped thoughtfully at his drink. "Nothing specific off the top of my head. I just thought it would be nice to get to know you. See where the conversation went organically, so to speak."

"Not at all," she said. Mary loved showing off her home. Tom had missed a tea party there a few months back. Even though the whole house wasn't finished in the simulation, most of the public downstairs places were as well as her bedroom.

"I will ask one then," Mary continued. "What has made you so fascinated with the 20th century?"

"Well, that's a loaded question." Tom grinned, "It's one of the centuries that had the most technological advantages of any. Flight, the Space Age, the Internet. So many advances that are paramount to the way we live now." Tom knew that Mary wouldn't necessarily have first hand experiences of many of these things. But, he figured he'd answer honestly at least.

"But, honestly. It's mostly the pop culture. And the cars. I am absolutely fascinated by the combustion engine."

Mary nodded. Most of that, other than flight, had come along after her. Even still, she had little experience with flight. She had never been in an airplane back home.

"You mean like jazz music or Rudolph Valentino?" Mary asked, for once not feeling foolish for bringing either of those topics up. At least Tom had a way of making her feel more comfortable. "My brother-in-law was our chauffeur before he married my sister, so he's always loved cars."

Since her husband had died in one, Mary was a bit more reserved in her opinion.

Tom was clearly quite excited about where this conversation was going. His smile was wide, and he looked like an excited school boy. "I love Jazz music. Although I think my favourite music is rock and roll from the 1950's. I had a holoprogramme back on Voyager, where I could work on numerous different cars, while listening to rock music."

"Who's your favourite jazz musician?"
