If Rose wasn't here, Lissa was pretty sure she'd be a lot more nervous about this new experience, the whole concept of living in space still made her nervous. She had so many questions, so many things she wanted to understand that she was pretty sure she was going to give herself a headache thinking about it all.

Having heard about the Saturday night welcome/catch up event, Lissa wasn't going to miss it. She found herself sitting at a table sipping something she'd never heard before watching everyone around her. She should stand up and talk to someone, but she was too fascinated by everything around her that she lost track of time just watching people.

These kinds of gatherings were often a little too mentally 'loud' for River, but she liked them all the same. It was a great way to meet new people or observe the ones she hadn't quite been able to approach yet.

She ordered herself a coffee instead of alcohol, and looked around. River's eyes spotted someone who looked like they enjoyed the quiet as much as she did, but maybe wanted a little bit of sympathetic company.

So she wandered over with her cup and took up a seat next to Lissa. "It's fun to sit at the edges of these things sometimes. You see things other people miss."

Lissa was always careful to smile without showing her fangs, and she smiled just like that at River.

"Sometimes I think it's a better way of learning the room, barging right in, it's easy to miss a lot." She agreed and offered her perspective at the same time.

"I'm Lissa. I just got here last Sunday," Lissa said even though she had a feeling she didn't need to explain.

If Lissa had fangs, River definitely didn't notice. Only that the smile seemed at once warm and slightly... careful, and River thought that seemed only natural. It was mixed company on a strange ship, after all.

"I'm River," She stated her name, then sipped at her coffee. "I was here... right before earth. I've lost track of the time. The ship had an accident for a few days, and we drifted. I think my mind is still drifting with it sometimes. Oh."

She paused and glanced at Lissa, "It's all fixed now, in case I just scared you."

"It's a pleasure to meet you River," Lissa said with a small bow of her head.

"Is it hard? Keeping track of time? I mean, in the sense that watching the stars go by days on end, I guess I can just see where it could start to seem like one long day.

"It's okay, startle, yes, scare, no. I guess it is only natural that things happen on a ship this size that travels the galaxy." She said with a shrug. "I get the impression there is a lot that I need to learn about being out in space."

River's nose scrunched up a bit as she thought about keeping track of the time. One of her hands tucked some hair behind her ear, and she pursed her lips. "They try to keep track. Dimmed lights in the evening, brighter in the day, and regular 'day time' based schedules. I used to live in space back in the 'verse, I should be acclimated by now. But it's still hard sometimes."

Then she nodded her head, her eyes lighting up. "Yes! So many new things to learn, that's the good part! I overloaded my PADD trying to stuff it with all of the knowledge I wanted to read. What kind of world are you from?"

Nodding, Lissa didn't mention that she was used to living the opposite schedule, awake at night, sleeping during the day. She'd adjusted to the other way around before. She could do it again. "You've lived in space before? Was it like this? Or how different was it?"

At her question, she wasn't completely sure how to answer that. "From my understanding, it's just a different reality of Earth? I'm not completely sure how all of that works yet. I'm from a world where we Earth is doing well, there are problems, but I suppose that's the norm. But, it's a lot years in the past compared to where we are now."

(ooc:sorry that I'm taking forever, omg this last week or so @_@ )

"Oh no, nothing like this at all," River replied, shaking her head. She noted that Lissa was from another place like Earth, only in the past, and wondered if it was Earth-that-was. That didn't seem likely, though. It was more likely that Earth itself existed in multiple places at once.

River motioned around the ship, "This one, it's too clean. It runs too smoothly. And there's lots more people. And more to eat. The Serenity is smaller, has more character. Also a big galley, but we don't always make enough to fill it with anything that doesn't come in tins. This place is much nicer. If a bit... crowded."

[ooc: no worries! I'm traveling right now so I'm slow myself]

Lissa nodded smiling, she figured a smaller place would have more character. "Sometimes I feel like we are in a flying city." She admitted figuring that was the best way to describe it.

"So, the other ship you were on, Serenity, how many people were on it?"

"Oh, you'd love the ships where I'm from. Some of them, the ones owned by the Alliance, actually are. Big, floating space cities. With towering buildings!" River motioned with her hands, trying to indicate how tall the individual buildings on the bigger ships tended to get in comparison to hers.

"Sometimes... five. Sometimes six... For a while we had nine! But... things happened. They always happen, and now we're a little fewer."
