Welcome to the Deck 5 Lounge

"The fuzzy little monsters are sadly before my time," River replied, shaking her head. She could get a mental picture of what they looked like from Steven, though, and she nodded to herself as he pushed the cake towards her. "Reginald is a big name for a tiny soul, he must have been special to you."

On the Serenity, there had been very few instances where they'd gotten to eat a real cake. River stared at it for a moment, looking awed at the idea that he'd be willing to share such a rare treasure. "What kind of cake is it?"

Steven made a sad face and shook his head. "They were special to me. Reginald had a lot of babies and we had to get rid of them. But I think everything is special, so that's just me."

He watched her in awe of the cake. "You can have it all, if you want." He noticed that she might not have cake where she was from. Unless she was just a foodie. "It's red velvet. With cream cheese frosting."

River frowned for a few seconds, hoping that 'getting rid of them' had been a humane procedure that hadn't involved murdering a bunch of cute, fluffy little creatures. In her universe you did what you had to do, and sometimes it wasn't very nice. But she felt for Steven, losing his pet like that.

"We don't have enough space on my old ship to keep pets. Wouldn't survive too long either, we go a lot of the time without enough food. Better for them. But not for you, I'm sorry Reginald had to go."

She reached a few fingers towards the cake, gently breaking off a piece with some frosting on it. There were probably utensils around to eat it with, but River didn't seem to notice. It was absolutely delicious and she grinned after she was done eating her piece. "Red velvet with cream cheese frosting... This is a rare treasure indeed. But I can't just steal your whole cake."

"Reginald and his babies-- er, her babies, .... they're babies, they're on a planet where they can do whatever they want forever. So it's for the best. You're right."

He watched her try the food and put his hands together almost menacingly. He loved when people tried new things, which is why he loved the Gems so much.

"You're not stealing! I'm giving! Have it! It's not helping me anyway."

"They get to live somewhere nice and be free? That's better than what I thought they did, I'm glad." At least Reginald and all of her babies could be happy somewhere, making a family for themselves.

She thought about what kind of pet she'd even get if there was room on her ship for that. "I'm sorry the cake isn't cheering you up, though. It's so delicious, but sometimes delicious things just aren't enough. Do you think they'd let you have another kind of pet?"

River asked her question by looking around for that fork she'd missed the first time. Finally finding one, she picked it up and took another forkful of the cake.

"They wanted to kill them at first. I'm glad they didn't. Everything deserves a chance." Back home, Steven tried to rehabilitate a corrupted gem. He didn't think anything was a monster, even when faced with monsters. He felt bad for everything.

"I don't think they'd let me have a pet, and besides, I have a roommate. I'd have to ask him. Two roommates now that I think of it. They're friends." Hey now, Peter was his friend too. But he was being a bit mopey and didn't consider that.

"Isn't it good?" He said with a huge smile.

"It's delicious. We don't get a lot of fresh food out in the black. Mostly it's canned goods and protein. We had someone aboard once who made a very good soup out of our supplies but she was a liar and tried to take the ship from us," River explained, while taking another forkful of cake. She wasn't used to eating a lot of sugar and probably needed to pace herself, but it was so good.

"I have a roommate. She's quiet, but she's been through a lot. You can tell." River decided not to explain how she knew that, still determined not to spook people on the ship. "It's in her... eyes. They're tired a lot. But I think you could keep something small in your quarters, couldn't you? That wouldn't bother them, I mean."

"The black? You mean space? We stop now and again. Last time we stopped, it was an amazing park." When she told him the story of the soup maker, he looked enthralled. "I hate when people are liars."

There wasn't a lot Steven didn't like about people. Even their lies were interesting.

"Who is she? Do you know her name yet? Mine's Peter and his friend James. They're wizards."

"She conned my Captain into marrying her, it was an adventure. We have a lot of adventures in Space." Usually they weren't good ones. River reflected on that, and decided that most of them weren't, in fact. But there'd been the time with the cows, that was fun. Until the burning at the stake part anyway.

"Her name is Clarke. I think she's learning to do doctor things, like my brother. Simon is the best doctor in the entire 'verse. He's so smart. Your roommates are real wizards? With magic, like in the stories?"

"I've had a few adventures in space. But they weren't always good ones. We went to the moon one time! That was kind of neat. The other ones usually involved kidnapping." He thought about the time he found out about Garnet's situation via being trapped with her.

"Like in the stories!" he repeated. "It's amazing. I wish I had the books here, I could let you borrow them."

"Which books are they? Maybe we could put them on my PADD to read later." The little device was unlike anything River had ever played with in her own universe, but she was quick to adapt to new things and had already grown very fond of it.

She grabbed up another forkful of cake then, and shoved it into her mouth while she pulled her PADD out of her pocket. Red Velvet cake was addicting, she decided. Even though she knew nothing in its chemical makeup was a drug. Except perhaps the sugar, though that was debatable in many circles.

	She tapped at the PADD, entering the search string and discovering a handful of books, though nothing about 'unfortunate events' was in the titles. "He must go through a lot, this Harry Potter. 	Steven shrugged, "It'd be nice, I have a lot of questions." He eyed her cake. "I'm going to go get a slice for myself. I'll come back. River grinned at him and waved her hand, watching him go before returning her attention back to her own cake. Even if it wasn't really hers, because it had been his to start.
