Welcome to the Deck 5 Lounge: Karaoke Night Edition

Lucifer Morningstar and Tony Stark have taken over the lounge to host a night of karaoke, kicked off by a surprisingly strong duet rendition of "Friends in Low Places." Then the floor is opened for anyone who wishes to join in, with the duo warning that if no one else sings, the quality of their song choices will deteriorate quickly throughout the night.

"Oh," she replied, laughing a bit at his action. "Yes, I think I understand. I rather like that. Although I am not sure how hate can be thrown...? Does that have something to do with 'haters gonna hate' too?"

It was some kind of new-fashioned slang that she hadn't heard before. Granted, even some of the slang used in her time went right past her as well.

"Well I mean, the easiest way is verbally, you know. Like speaking hateful words at people, in modern times we like to use other words for that. 'Throwing Shade' is another one, that kinda just basically means something... like..." He squinted, struggling to find the exact meaning out of context, "Like your girl friends whispering stuff about you that's not true or kind of rude to your other friends. Or even people that you don't know. So they're throwing around dark words about you, throwing shade. And yeah so like-"

Tony realised that he'd almost have to get into the idea of 'meme culture' to explain some of these things, and he wasn't sure how to do that. "You know how we have these PADDS and we can use them to make text at each other. Imagine there's something like that, only the network to connect them is all over the world, and people talk on it every day. With their phones, or devices like these, or computers. And then there's this thing called 'social media', where lots of people can quickly have conversations about a thing or make quick updates about their lives. So they can 'throw hate' at you through that. A lot. A lot of hate gets thrown actually, the internet is a scary place. But yeah. Haters gonna hate is a phrase too. It means people who like to hate things are always going to be hating things."

"I think I understand what you're saying," Mary replied. About 'throwing hate', not particularly about 'social media'. That was still a foreign concept for her. More likely she would understand it if she was shown one day. "People can be hateful and you shouldn't mind them. I like that." That seemed oddly fitting in her life at the moment.

"Did you have fun up there?" It looked like it at least. She wondered if one had to be drunk in order to sing completely uninhibited.

"Ding Ding, we have a winner! Yup, that's totally exactly the thing, to just... keep living, don't mind the haters. 'Cause they're just gonna hate, so fuck 'em. But not literally." Tony said, grinning a bit. Then he realised he'd said F word in front of Mary, and laughed, "Uh, oops."

"But yes, I love me some karaoke. It's the good kind of spotlight. The one where people don't scream at me too much and also my clothes stay on."

Mary laughed at his reaction to cursing in front of her. She may not say such words, but it wasn't as if she hadn't ever heard them. It amused her that everyone seemed to try to be on their best behavior around her.

"Yes, well, I think we'd all rather that your clothes stay on," Mary said playfully. Though she remembered what Jadzia had told her and thought that maybe seeing Tony naked might not be that terrible.

"Probably in public, at least," Tony agreed, giving Mary a playful look. "That's the kind of places where you end up in the brig the next day. Don't need to make trouble, even if I'm sure at least Tails would enjoy the show."

Probably more than just Tails, since the bar was packed and he and Lucifer had even flirted a few times. That meant the girls and the guys might both get a thrill out of it.

"But I am totally on my best behavior all the time. Yup. That's me. Mr. Nice Tony. Who doesn't randomly flash strangers. Because illegal. And also potentially embarrassing."

Mary might enjoy it too, but she wasn't saying a word. After ruining her friendship with Lucifer, she wasn't even going there with Tony.

"Sounds as if it's happened before."

"I was a pretty naughty guy in my youth, Princess." Tony confessed, with a slow nod of his head. "It's what happens when you're let loose after years o mainly being raised by a governess and a butler, with a platinum credit card and your dad's multi billion dollar bank account. You figure you're invincible and your parents sure as hell don't care what you do. So you do whatever you want."

"By all accounts I should have done that too," Mary replied, "though we never had billions. That number is astronomical in my time." Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, the Royal Family - they had billions. Maybe not even the Royal Family. "I had my chance to live invincibly and found out that I wasn't. I suppose I had it knocked out of me at an early age."

"That's what they do when girls try to stretch their wings a bit," Tony remarked. He'd been a womanizer himself in his time and tended to treat everyone with equal amounts of callousness, but now that he was a little more awake about it he still hated the way women were treated.

"Still happening even in my time. Girls get paid less, the government still tries to control them with laws, they don't get any respect, and a woman who acted like me in my time would get all kinds of nasty words thrown at her. Meanwhile I'm a playboy and a stud. Nice names, ones that make a guy feel proud and all chest poundy."

"It's a bit sad that hasn't changed then," she said. Being a woman who lived in her time but also liked sex meant that she ran up against obstacles. Not that Mary was going around sleeping with everyone, but any sort of sex outside of marriage was considered a scandal, especially for a woman of her social status. "It seems that so many things have changed though."

"Lots of stuff changed, and it's like a kind of... two steps forward, one step back kind of thing. You guys think you're gaining ground and society all together kind of thinks it's getting more progressive, but then a bunch of rich fat old white guys with power decide that treating all people like equal human beings is too scary for them. So they make laws and interfere with other laws and it's a whole big mess. Kind of worse in America than some other places, but still pretty bad, yeah."

And Tony couldn't say that his company hadn't meddled with something at some point. "Stark Industries was part of the problem for a while. After the kidnapping I came home and started trying to put it right. Well, we stopped making weapons. Which was millions of dollars we weren't getting. Plus all that power in the right circles, poof gone. There were some people not too happy with me about that."
