WHO: Mary and Lucifer
WHEN: 226404.08, afternoon
WHERE: The bookstore at the Yorktown base
SUMMARY: Mary runs into Lucifer for the first time since his table-throwing fit.
WARNINGS: TBD

It was funny to Mary how this store was billed as some sort of antiques shop when many of the books in it were written after her time. It made her feel like an antique herself, but Mary pushed through it. It was simply so nice to have real books with paper pages again. Reading on the PADD just wasn't the same. After Lucifer had sent her the copy of Pride & Prejudice as a make-up gift, she knew that she would have to visit the store to stock up on more books before they left the base.

Another thing that was odd to her was how much reading she was doing here. Mary did read at home, but it wasn't an incredible passion for her. Maths had always stimulated her more. Perhaps it was simply that there wasn't much for her to do on board. Joining the Traveler Liaison Committee had helped her a bit, but she still needed things to do in her downtime.

She had picked up a copy of The Great Gatsby off of the shelf. It was a book that she had heard a lot about since her arrival, and the fact that it was apparently about the era she lived in fascinated her, even if it was written after her time. Mary was perusing the back cover when movement caught her eye. Oh God. It was Lucifer. She tried to move away around the other side of the bookshelf, but she was sure that he had seen her. Mary was absolutely not looking forward to this conversation.

"I do wish it was," Lucifer replied easily. "But you knew that, didn't you?"

"Of course," she replied, leading him down the aisle of books and hoping that he would follow. "You absolutely wish we could date. Actually, I'm sure your desires run more carnal than that."

Mary was teasing, but it probably wasn't far from the truth.

"It's like you know me," Lucifer replied, following her. "And like you're just leading me on right now, because you've already made yourself quite clear to me on that."

"On the contrary, I think it was you who made that clear to me when you told me about the detective." She raised an eyebrow at him, then got serious for a moment. "If you want the honest truth..." Mary said, thinking that a bookstore was an odd place to be discussing something like this. "I am... intrigued by you Lucifer, when you are not throwing tables. But I do not think that sleeping together would be a good idea."

It would only complicate things and she rather liked them as friends. They seemed to have enough complications with that.

"Oh I don't know," Lucifer replied. "You're the one who kept repeating how you had no intention of having sex with me." Yes they were in the middle of the bookstore. No, he didn't care. "And the detective isn't here. I'm no longer going to make decisions based on her." He'd made up his mind on that after Maze had somehow left.

"But I'll respect your wishes until you change your mind," he smirked.

Mary gave a furtive look around. One person had glanced up at them with a furrowed brow, but then went back to his book as soon as Mary caught his eye. She turned back to Lucifer.

"So now you wish to forsake your love?" Mary asked, leaning in so that she could speak more quietly to him. "We should not sleep together, even if you no longer care what the detective thinks."

"Right. I said I'd respect your wishes," Lucifer said. "But are you trying to convince me or yourself? Because admit it... you still wonder if I can back up all my talk."

Mary folded her arms across her chest. She was not going to admit anything.

"It wouldn't be safe anyway. How would I know that you wouldn't get mad and throw the bed at me?"

"Protest all you want, Lady Mary," Lucifer said with a smirk. "If you don't sleep with the Captain soon, you're going to end up in my bed."

Well that was a bit uncouth. Her eyebrows knitted.

"How dare you suggest that. Does our friendship not mean anything to you, or have you only apologized to me so that you might bed me?"

She wouldn't be surprised. But, on the other hand, damn him for being so attractive. He was being much more direct than Kirk was.

"Hey, it was you who brought up all of my carnal desires," Lucifer replied. "But yes, Mary, our friendship means a great deal to me. If it didn't, I wouldn't be here."

His eyes scanned the titles of a particular shelf before he added, "That doesn't mean you don't want me, though."

Mary sighed deeply and rolled her eyes. "Perhaps I ought to just sleep with you so you can stop going on about it." Because it was starting to annoy her, both the way he talked about it and the way she might actually be a bit intrigued by the idea of going to bed with him.

"However you need to justify it to yourself," Lucifer said, smiling brightly at her.

"How many times have you been slapped?" Mary asked, imagining that the number must be astronomical. She took her copy of The Great Gatsby and moved down the aisle of books with her head high. Stopping at the end of the row, she figured that she had put enough distance between them, so she stared at the books in front of her, nose in the air.

"A few times," Lucifer said. "I can't remember anyone other than the detective, but I'm sure there were a couple."

He shrugged and caught back up with her. "Also, you kissed me, remember." Hell, she'd all but thrown herself at him when she was drunk.

Mary turned to glare at him. "I never kissed you on your mouth. I remember that much at least. Besides, whatever I did while intoxicated does not count." Clearly, she wasn't in her right mind. Alcohol made her cuddly, and so she had cuddled.

Lucifer was going to tell her to relax, but thought better of it when he remembered that she still had every right to be upset with him. So instead, he changed his tune entirely.

"I'm glad we're friends," he told her.

That was a radical shift and it threw Mary for a moment. "I'm glad we're friends too," she replied. "I told you, I do not wish to ruin it." It was hard to be just friends with a man after Mary slept with him. She wasn't the casual hook-up type. Even if she didn't want to be in a relationship with him, sex with Lucifer would forever change how she saw him and acted around him.

"Well if you're not going to declare it ruined after all that's happened, I don't want to ruin it either," he said. "Except I don't think that would ruin anything. Except maybe other men for you..."

He had to tease her at least once more.

Mary almost rolled her eyes at him again, but in the end decided to respond in kind. "Oh, I doubt you're better than the Captain," she said with certainty and then turned to head towards the register to purchase her book.

"And people call me the devil," Lucifer muttered. "Fine, I'll let you have the last word because otherwise this is going to end in my bedroom."

"Why not mine?" Mary called back. "You already know how comfortable it is."

Honestly, Mary wasn't sure how to deal with him. Regardless of whether she reacted with shock or reacted by flirting back, his reaction was the same. Lucifer was insistent and flirtatious no matter what. Mary had to decide how much fun she wanted to get out of it and whether or not it was appropriate to do so.

Oh bloody hell. Could she just admit what she wanted so they could get it over with by now? This was driving him mental.

He went to pay for his book, and then walked back to Mary. "When you make up your mind," he said, "You know how to find me."

The hair stood up on the back of her neck. She hated how she couldn't help the fact that she was attracted to him, at least sexually. He talked a good game and that made her curious.

Mary glanced at him as he walked by while she waited in line to purchase her book.

There, Lucifer had gotten to her. She either needed to tell him no, mean it, and not keep flirting with the idea of sleeping with him, or she needed to sleep with him and satiate her curiosity. Of course, that option could prove dangerous, if she intended for it to only be a one time thing.

Lucifer waved and said goodbye, and then ducked out of the shop.

Really, Mary probably just needed to sleep with Kirk. He was certain the Captain didn't have the attitude and confidence to assume command at such a young age without at least something to show for it.
