Waterways tour shenanigans

The waterways boat tour was an adventure that wasn't for the faint at heart if that person happened to only go ON the water when absolutely necessary, but Marian had been promised it would 'wow' her, and it certainly did that. IN fact it was so gorgeous that she found herself bending over the side just to take in the sights.

Rather suddenly, though, her wonderment was replaced with the shock of ice cold water and even icier cold fear. She'd fallen out, and into the water beneath! Marian didn't know how to swim, but she assumed it involved lots of arm flailing and shrieking. "NOW WOULD BE AN EXCELLENT TIME TO BE A DRAGON!" She shouted. Was that what possibly drowning people were supposed to shout? Probably not.

Lucifer was enjoying the tour, again, because the tour wasn't the ship and there was water. And plants. And something that resembled sun. Everything felt somewhat normal for a bit until Hawke went overboard.

He laughed as she shouted. "What the bloody hell does that mean?" he asked. The boat was passing her by and she wasn't swimming toward it. "Wait? Can't you swim? Try standing up!" he shouted back at her as they drifted away.

But his amusement turned to alarm when she kept panicking. "Oh bloody hell," he muttered, not even kicking off his shoes before he jumped in and swam over to her. And then stood them up. The water came up to his shoulders. "See? All good. Let's get back on the boat?"

What? Try standing up? What? She could barely hear Lucifer over the rushing sound in her ears of panic and impending death and would she end up at the Maker's Bosom this time?

She definitely couldn't swim, she'd never had to learn and if it were up to her she'd never even be on a ship, unless Isabela was dragging her somewhere. Or she desperately had to travel. "DRAGON!" She shouted again, as if shouting the word would turn her into one. Then she could just fly away from all of this.

Of course she didn't, and then Lucifer came swimming over to her like some dashing devilish hero, and... then the water wasn't that deep at all and she wanted to die. "If I close my eyes right now do you think you could pretend that you aren't here and this didn't just happen?"

Lucifer slipped his arm around her and started walking toward the boat, bringing her with him whether she wanted to go back or not. By now the boat had slowed down so maybe someone had thought to stop it. "Well maybe," he said. "Except now my brand new clothes are ruined so it might be a bit more difficult."

He glanced over at her, and he couldn't stay annoyed. "Not much of a swimmer are you? We should fix that later."

"Now I wish I was a dragon so that I could just... fly away from all of this crushing embarrassment." Marian noticed that the boat had slowed down, and was just honestly glad that no alarms had been sounded and that people weren't coming out of the woodwork to collect them.

There was the side benefit of being this close to Lucifer, even if he was soaking wet and obviously never going to let her live this down. She put an arm around him, using the excuse that she'd just been scared out of her wits as a reason to cling a little. It wasn't that big a stretch. "Never had much cause to swim, my first time near water was escaping... anyway, your clothes ARE all wet and wrinkling now. I suppose I owe you a new set."

"No use worrying about it," Lucifer said easily. "Hell, I ripped a table from the floor and threw it across the lounge and nobody's asked me about that." Of course his eyes had been glowing red and more than one person had purposely avoided him since then.

They caught up with the boat, and a few minutes were back aboard, with Lucifer not really paying any attention to anyone around them, focused entirely on the fact that he really should have kicked off his shoes before jumping in. He took them off now and wrinkled his nose at being dripping wet and out of the water.

"You ripped a table from the floor and I didn't hear about this?" Marian asked casually, on their way back to the boat. Since he didn't bother to remove her arm she kept it there the whole way, though she let go when they were finally seated again.

Marian kicked her own soggy shoes off and wrung out her shirt, "That's... twice now you've played the hero to me. I'm beginning to think a drink isn't going to repay it at this point."

The waterway tour shenanigans were actually pretty funny to Aloy. If she knew what popcorn was, she'd be eating some right now, watching those two splash about in the water. That was probably embarrassing. She's glad it wasn't her.

The most interesting thing about the tour to her were the trees. So many of them were alien to her, even many from Earth. On the Enterprise she'd gotten to look at pictures of animals that GAIA had loved, but didn't exist for her. She murmured to herself, "I wonder if there's any place on this station with animals."

Her good deed completed, Ginny waited several minutes before she moved from where Marian and Lucifer were sitting towards another redhead on the boat. Noticing fellow gingers was one of her inadvertent past times and she gave a friendly smile towards the other woman as she approached.

"I think there is a zoo of some sort," she replied, having overheard the comment. "It might not be a good one, but they would have animals." Of course, she didn't really understand why muggles wanted to put animals in cages just for people to stare at them, but that was a conversation for another day.

Aloy smiled back. "I don't really know what a zoo is, but if it has animals, I'm interested. Didn't have anything bigger than a boar where I'm from. There hadn't been time for bigger animals by the time I was born."

Which sounded weird, she knew, but Aloy had never been one to mince words.

"It's......" Ginny began, eager to explain a zoo until she realized that she actually didn't know what to say offhand. "Ummm...." the redhead paused, a line forming in the space between her eyebrows while she considered what to say. "It's a place where people to to stare at animals," she said, "But the animals are separated from them in these big spaces that are made to look and feel like where they are from originally."

Which was still pretty much a cage, but she was trying to be encouraging. And it was always possible that the zoo in Yorktown was nothing like the London Zoo where she had spent an afternoon or two in her life.

"So like a cage," Aloy bluntly stated. She wasn't sure how she felt about that, having been in a cage at least once in her life. Granted, that had been shortly before being dropped into a death arena so it was probably a little different, but still.

"But I can't see how you'd have animals wandering around freely." But maybe it was holographic. Like that thing that Dax was making. Which made Aloy wonder if she could see things she'd only ever dreamed about.

"Yeah, like a cage." Ginny agreed easily enough, seeing no real reason to dance around the truth. "But, at home at least, it was a pretty nice one." Though she didn't really think it made it any better but it certainly could have been worse.

"No," she said with a nod of agreement, "Especially since a lot of the animals are usually dangerous for Muggles." And there she went again, using words and phrases from her isolated world and expecting everyone to just know precisely what she was saying. Sighing at herself, Ginny quickly explained, "People without magic. We call them muggles where I'm from."

Mary Crawley & OTA

Mary was greatly enjoying being on the star base, even if it wasn't quite the same as returning to Earth. There was still a lot more space than on the ship. Being in the botanical gardens and seeing greenery again was wonderful. She delighted in all of the plants and wished that they didn't have to leave.

The boat tour was nice, other than poor Hawke's dip in the water. What Mary really enjoyed was the bit where they got to walk around at the end. That way she could examine some of the plants up close.

She was drawn to some flowers that reminded her of pink orchids, though they seemed to be able to move of their own free will. They bobbed back and forth in front of her as Mary leaned in to smell them. The scent was curiously like vanilla.

"How delightful," she said quietly.

Since B'Elanna had arrived too soon before they docked at the starbase, she hadn't been added to the active duty roster yet, though she had spoken with Mr. Scott in engineering. Of course, being 100 years in the past, she was even more self-conscious of her Klingon half. This wasn't a friendly time with Klingons 1st all, and she felt like everyone was staring and whispering about her as she explored the starbase. That was why she tagged along on the botanical gardens tour, where the majority of participants were other travelers.

She stopped alongside a woman who was looking at some flowers with wide eyes. "Those are hislaritos," she said. "They're native to Risa, the pleasure the planet. I didn't know they grew elsewhere."

The woman's forehead made Mary stare a bit, though not out of any preconceived notions about her species. It was simply an odd sight to her, though she was becoming more and more used to odd sights.

"They're beautiful," Mary replied with a smile. "I believe this place must grow plant species from across the galaxy. We had a similar botanical garden in London back home, though just for Earth plants, obviously." They hadn't gotten off of the planet yet. "There is a pleasure planet?"

So she was one of the travelers from a time in the past, probably even, B'Elanna realized, from before first contact and deep space travel was possible on Earth. "They're supposed to be an aphrodisiac," she said. "But only when they're put into perfume. It's expensive."

She nodded. "Risa? Yeah. Popular planet to visit on break from the Academy, though I never went. I've heard stories though."

"Oh," Mary said, intrigued by that. It was information that she would file away, just as she would with the fact that there was a whole planet devoted to pleasure. "Is it... quite a scandalous place?" She was thinking of adult type pleasures, not the simple type of pleasures that anyone could get out of life.

"It can be," B'Elanna said. "But I assume it's just like any other paradise planet. You get out of it what you want from it." She bent over a rose and smelled it, then laughed and rubbed her nose.

There was no way Poe was going to turn down any kind of tour around the impressive starbase they'd stopped at. He was still adjusting to being in a different universe but it helped that the General was there, even if it was going to take time to call her Leia. She'd been his commanding officer for a long time and she had his respect and loyalty beyond all others.

As they walked around the gardens he took in all the species of plantlife, some oddly familiar and others very foreign to him. He had to admit he was looking forward to seeing hydroponics and seeing what sort of things were grown here to feed everybody. It was an impressive sized base and it seemed to be a home for many people, Poe preferred a planet but couldn't deny this was not a terrible alternative.

"Never seen anything like this before," Leia said, clearing her throat as she fell into step beside Poe. "Not the gardens, of course. The royal gardens on Laderaan were like this, but I mean the starvase. Imagine, a starbase fostering life rather than threatening death." She was unable to keep the wry tone from her voice as she referred to the Death Stars and then, more recently, Starkiller, even if that had been a planet."

Poe smiled as Leia joined him, her presence was always welcomed and her being here made it feel a little more like home. Or as close to as possible anyway. "It's a much better purpose for it that's for sure" Poe agreed, it was incredible how two similar things could have such different reasons for existing, "I like the design of it" he commented, "They've worked hard to make it a home for those who live here" Greenery always seemed to do that though, bring life to things even in the vastness of space.

Leia glanced around as she listened to Poe and nodded. "It's quite breathtaking," she said. She turned to him and smiled. It was good to see him here, that he was around, and she wondered for a moment if he'd had a chance to talk to Rey yet, but she didn't ask him that. "Have you settled in? I'm sure you must be going as stir-crazy as I am, with nothing to do, no Resistance to fight for."

Poe hadn't seen or heard from Rey at all, though he'd be pleased to once they made contact. She was a good friend to Finn and he was glad they'd been able to save her from whatever fate had been waiting for her on Starkiller.

"It's definitely not something I expected" Poe admitted, "And I miss my X-Wing. It doesn't feel right without being off on some kind of mission. BB-8 feels the same, he's been trying to work out ways back but even he doesn't know where to start" Most of Poe's life had been spent in the cockpit of some kind of ship, he knew the need to fly would only get worse the longer they were here.

She wondered how Poe would react, eventually, when he learned of Leia's relationship with his father. She had begun to consider Poe something of a son, in the years that she's gotten to know him (after losing Bed), and their relationship could be fractured so easily once the truth came out. But with Rey here, and with Leia's joy at having her daughter back, that wasn't a truth she was going to continue hiding.

"Hopefully the captain and crew of the Enterprise will let us figure out something to do. I don't know if I can stand having an extended vacation."
