So, that happened. It really is 1832.

Thoughts? I'm not completely against helping them if it gets us out of here. What do we know about this time? We need all the information together.

My name's Grant Ward. I'm a Black Ops specialist back home. So figuring out who we have and what we can all bring to the table, it's our best way forward here.

Well, at least this way, everyone else isn't left out in the cold. Genius language skills don't come so easily to all.

Now, what's the goal here? We're supposed to save the asses of some people who weren't smart enough to keep their heads down and mouths shut in the wake of severe monarchical shifts?

But it's an entire wasted opportunity to be smug.

Save their lives, fix this, however we see fit. But they believe in something. It's admirable in a way.

You say, as if you're not going to get plenty of other opportunities for smugness.

Believing in things in France was dangerous during the last few centuries. But I suppose having something you're willing to die for is. In a way. Reckless as it is as well.

Well yeah inevitably.

I get it. I mean why they're doing it, and if we have to help them to get out of here we may as well get it right.

Of course. Mr. Everybody's Type is hardly going to let an opportunity to prove he's superior pass by.

Hmm. Do you? Get it? I suppose I can be persuasive when I need to be. If that's useful.

I said that? I mean I'm not saying I'm not.

You'll find a way to be useful. Seems like you do that. And I do get it, they want to change their world.

In response to my comment that you didn't seem like May's type. You're very much the antithesis of Coulson, after all.

Mmm, yes, that is one of my specialties, making myself seemingly indispensable. Granted, it doesn't always work. But it's always worth the try.

And you find that admirable, risking yourself for a set of beliefs meant to better the world, even when you have next to no chance of success?

Oh she initiated. Kinda the point.

I'm sure John thought you were. And you always seem to land on your feet.

Not sure I could do it. But yeah, I'm impressed when people can

Oh, I've no doubt of that. You'd hardly have risked your position on such a fling had she not been the one to start it. And yes. Yes, I suppose that does make sense. Using you as a distraction to keep feelings from complicating the team dynamic.

To the extent that I was the one who could give him what he needed without complaint. Ian wasn't quite as keen on playing ball by the end of it.

You've no idea how much that means, do you?

It needed to be her. And it worked. But we should leave that in the past where it is.

And the less talk about Quinn the better too frankly.

How much it means? Should I?

Mmm, yes, perhaps it's for the best.

We were all tools, Grant, to fulfill Garrett's desires. Ian as much as any of us. Garrett was just too much of a coward to pull the trigger himself.

Should you? No. I imagine you shouldn't. But it means a great deal.

...Don't. We're not talking about him right now.

Why does it matter?

Ian or John?

Because a man only admires what he wishes he could achieve himself. You aspire to nobility, honor, heroics. Far from the selfish, weak monster you tried to paint yourself as.

All right. I'll drop it.

I'm just from further down the line than the rest of you, Grant. That's all.

We'll get there, eventually. I will admit. I am glad the rest of you have been spared most of it. It wasn't a particularly kind year.

Well I'm not shocked. Can't imagine I had a good year.

Why do you care, about what happens us. I know why you care about Skye but me?

Understatement. I really should have offered to let you come along with Ian and I. Not that you would have accepted, but still.

Despite appearances, I'm not heartless. All of you deserved better than what you were getting, than what your faulty perceptions and fears were forcing you into. Everyone deserves a chance to become the best version of themselves, Grant.

No, I wouldn't have.

There's a best version of me? The best version of me was a fabrication.

Still. It would have been an offer made rather than simply leaving you to your fate.

Perhaps. But you can't con a con, Grant. You know as well as I that the best lies still come ultimately from a place of truth. And who we are and who we want to be aren't always that far removed from each other.

As soon as Quinn had stopped being useful to John I was going to kill him.

Yes, they do. But that's...

I'm not that guy. I'm not capable of being that for real.

And I imagine that's one of many reasons Ian has chosen to isolate himself from SHIELD and HYDRA shenanigans as of late. He so does prefer his privacy.

Oh, Grant. How little you see.

What's the difference between the decisions you made when pretending and ones you make for real? Where does the line between fantasy and reality really stop when the actions you're taking are just as real as if you had meant them sincerely? Only you know your motivates. How difficult would it be to change them?

Or do they really not matter to you at all like you tried so desperately to convince me?

Self preservation then.

They matter to me. You can see that as much as anyone. It would be easier if they didn't. But we're here, not back home. So why does this matter right now, any of this?

Self preservation and fear. Ian was never a man of moral fortitude.

I already said, Grant. Everyone deserves a chance to be the best version of themselves. It matters here just as much as it would matter back home.

You're better than what Garrett made you believe you are. Every weakness he played on, made you ashamed of. Those are your strengths. Don't be afraid of them.
