What: The drama continues! OR, Kai and Lin talk things out over authentic Chinese.
When: February 14, 7:00
Where: Park Cafe at the Mariott in Shanghai, China
Warnings: Erm, there might be some swearing? Nothing higher then PG-13, I should think.
When Kai had arrived home and back to the present time of February 13th after two weeks of partying at the 2008 Oktoberfest to keep his mind off of the night Lin had come to see him, he'd been surprised by the package on his doorstep. Surprised, and then angry. He recognized that return address- the coordinates of Gallifrey. Which meant Lin had been here. The two weeks of beer and dancing had been an excellent distraction, but it had done little to curb his anger or his hurt over what had happened. He was sorely tempted to take the package and drop it right back off at the Agency for Lin- unopened, and perhaps with an note. Probably saying something like 'Stay away from me.' But he didn't, because he knew he wouldn't have meant it and he was a schmuck with a tendency towards punishing himself.
So he'd taken it inside his apartment and ripped it open quickly, intending to get it over with, and what was inside surprised him. He wasn't sure what he'd expected, but that had certainly not been it. The book had been carefully placed in a spot of honor on the shelf with the rarer tombs he owned. The card, picture, and note got left on the table for him to stare at and consider anxiously. He wasn't honestly sure if he was ready to see Lin right now, even if Lin seemed to be ready to give him his answer and was clearly trying to apologize. Kai had a feeling he knew what it was going to be: 'Sorry, no, not interested. And even if I was, I'm busy trying to get over my murdered boyfriend.' But at the same time, he knew waiting around would only make it worse. It was better to just get if over with so he could get on accepting it and go back to being Lin's friend.
Which is how he wound up in Shanghai the next day, waiting outside of the Mariott, feeling a bit stuffy and silly in a black suit and shirt. While he liked dressing nicely, but not for something like this. He couldn't help wondering why the hell Lin had decided to pick Valentine's Day of all days to do this. This was probably going to wind up being by far the most miserable and awkward Valetine's Day he'd ever had- and for him, that was saying something. He fidgeted with the hem of the sleeve that was covering the Vortex Manipulator while he waited for Lin, trying to resist the urge to chicken out and go back home.
