Who: Lin Burns/the Doctor and young!Kai Polviander.
When: February 3, 1996.
Where: Kai's childhood home.
What: Lin overshoots his mark by, oh. Fifteen years. The result: the Doctor meets little Kai for the first time (from Kai's perspective). From Lin's, things start to make more sense.
Rating: G. It's an 8 year old and the Doctor.

It had been a strange night for Lin Burns. First, he'd managed to get talked into some sort of 'apology kiss.' He still wasn't sure how that had happened. Why would Kai ever want to kiss him, anyway? And then afterwards, he'd been off to explore Cardiff.

Granted, most of Lin's nights were odd ones. As far as nights go, it hadn't been so bad; he'd met some brilliant new people and he certainly hadn't been bored, but he'd gone to sleep confused. When he woke up? Still confused. There was only one thing for it, really. He was going to have to take the TARDIS over to Kai's to ask the other time-traveller some questions.

Unfortunately, the Doctor occasionally had problems with precision and punctuality. As the narrow blue shape of the TARDIS materialized, it wasn't the bustle of 2011 that met the fellow who stepped out the door. The mistake in time wasn't what caught Lin's attention, though - it was the fact that he was, rather inexplicably, in Kent. Huh. Had he meant to go to Kent? (Err, Doctor? he asked inwardly. Did you mean to land us here? Perhaps we ought--)

But it was too late. Lin heard a sound behind him. They'd been spotted, which meant he couldn't just dash inside the TARDIS and go.

Well. He could, but it wouldn't have been very polite. And, while the Doctor didn't always care about 'polite,' Lin usually did. "Ah," he said. "Hello. Strange bloke in your garden, I know, I'm sorry." He slowly turned on his heel, hands up so that the garden's owner could see them. It never hurt to be careful, right?

An eight-year old Kai sighed as he put down the book in his hands, resting his head against the stone wall of the house. He'd managed to escape Aunt Mildred's awful piano lesson for now by insisting that he needed some fresh air, but she'd probably drag him back inside soon enough. Honestly, why couldn't his family just realize that he liked himself the way he was? He didn't need piano lessons to make him a "more polite child." How was piano supposed to help anyways? It was completely illogical.

That's when he heard a strange noise out in the back of the garden. Vrrrrrwwwww, vrrrwwwwww, vrrrrwwwww. He'd never heard anything like it before in his life. Curious and completely ignoring any thought of 'it might be dangerous,' he snatched his book right back up and scampered around to the farthest corner of the property. What he saw was probably the strangest thing that had yet happened to Kai- there was a man just standing there, next to a slender blue Police Box that Kai knew had certainly not been there twenty minutes ago when he'd left the house and glanced at this section of the garden.

Now, Kai had always been told not to talk to strangers. But this one was such a strange stranger. After all, what kind of man stood around in other people's back lawns next to Police Boxes? It was certainly one of the most interesting things Kai had ever seen, and he was hardly one to pass up something interesting.

He just furrowed his brows for a moment when the man turned around, giving him a careful once over. Well, he certainly didn't look like a kidnapper. He was pretty sure they tended to look shady or were supposed to offer him candy right off the bat to lure him into a dingy looking car. Satisfied with his conclusion, Kai decided that it was okay to talk to him. "How did you get that Police Box back here?" He asked, tilting his head slightly to the side. Not 'What are you doing in my garden,' or 'Who are you,' or 'WHY is there a Police Box in the garden.' Just 'how.' "I'm not displeased, though. It's squashing all of Aunt Mildred's turnips. I hate her turnip soup- it's disgusting."

Oh, brilliant. It was a child's voice. The Doctor loved children. He was remarkably dangerous around them and Lin knew he'd have to watch his reincarnate like a hawk, but things were looking up. "What," the stranger said as he turned, "you're going to skip the boring questions and go straight to 'how?' I like you already. Well, good sir, this police box is no ordinary..."

And then Lin got his first good look at his turnip-hating host. He blinked. Several times.

"My word, look at you. You're tiny and ad---aaaaaaah." AHHHH. It was a miniature Kai. Not everyone looked like their baby photographs - if they had, there'd have been no point to the 'guess the adult from the photo' games played at reunions and baby showers - but some people? Some people were themselves scaled down (or up, if you were moving the proper way through time). Apparently Kai Polivander was one of those people.

Oh, hell.

Burns. I'll handle this. The Doctor said. He didn't have to add that Lin would only botch things up. He didn't have to - they both knew.

"It's a time machine." The Doctor waved an arm at the TARDIS in a gesture of misdirection that would've been at home in any stage magician's show. Look! Look at the blue box. The waving said. Don't focus on my verbal stumbling and obvious surprise. "It flies. I'd apologize about the turnips, but they are disgusting vegetables and if you're not upset, I'm certainly not."

Kai could only stare at him as the man sort of flailed, one of his eyebrows rising on his forehead. "Of course I'm tiny," he said like it was the most obvious thing in the world. "I'm eight. That's usually how eight-year-olds are." He paused, considering the man again. "You know, you're really weird."

That thought was only cemented as the man jumped from subject to subject, gesturing at the police box and insisting that it was a time machine. Kai leaned to the side to take a look at it, then glanced up at the man, then back at the police box. "That's a time machine?" He took a couple steps toward it, peering at it curiously. "Looks kind of weird to be a time machine. And in any case, there's no such thing as time machines." That didn't stop him from poking at it with his book cautiously, though, as though he was worried it might explode or something. Unlike his older self, the eight year-old Kai wasn't as willing to believe in things like time travel or aliens, and he was far more blunt about what he said. Still, he had to admit that something odd was going on here.

"They really are disgusting. And Aunt Mildred's soup smells awful- it nearly made me throw up, once." Stepping away from the police box, he turned his gaze back to the strange man. "If it is a time machine, it's not very big, is it? I bet there isn't even enough room for two people. ... Not that it matters, because it isn't." He scowled as though that would help to prove his point.

Why. Why did small children always think he was wei--

Because you smash their turnips to bits and claim your box can fly, Caitlin chimed in, ever-so-helpfully.

The Doctor did not dignify Lin's commentary with a response. Instead, he huffed at the little boy who'd just informed him that eight year olds are small. "You know, you're strangely literal for such a tiny person. Where's your sense of adventure?"

No, really. Where was little Kai's sense of adventure? Surely it couldn't all have come from River, could it?

"What are you called, tiny literal person? I'm the Doctor."

Doctor. Shouldn't we tell him my--
No, Burns. He didn't call you by it when you met in the museum, did he? Mustn't change your own timeline.

As the internal argument went on, the Doctor slapped his hands on his knees and waited for Kai's response. He'd address the topic of the TARDIS's size later. First, he needed a name to use, so that he wouldn't slip up and call the boy something that would raise suspicions.

"I have so got a sense of adventure!" Kai protested immediately, jerking his chin out even further. "Just not when it comes to weird men with police boxes that aren't time machines! And there's nothing wrong with being literal." Why did everyone have such a problem with that? That's just the way he was!

For a long moment Kai said nothing, instead just continuing to scowl at him. He considered making a comment about how weird 'the Doctor' was for a name, but he had a feeling that 'the Doctor' would just brush it off. Finally he sighed and gave in.

"Kai." He gave the Doctor a small glare, just daring him to make fun of it like so many other people had. "It's Finnish, like my dad. I don't know him though, and I don't want to. He's an idiot." After all, anyone who wasn't still in his mom's life had to be an idiot.

After another moment, Kai couldn't take it and decided to go ahead and ask the question that had been bugging him for a little bit now. "If you are a time traveler, and I still don't think you are, you're sort of a rubbish one. Aren't time travelers supposed to be sneaky to keep from messing up the time line? And you just went ahead and told me. You don't even know if I'm trust worthy! And," he went on with a tone that sounded a bit disdainful, "I'm assuming that weird noise a few minutes ago was because of you and your 'time machine.' You should try and keep that from happening- it doesn't sound right. And it's loud."

"AHA! Knew it!" The stranger exclaimed when Kai gave his name, in what was for a moment a very Scottish accent. Oops.

Not helping, Burns.

"Ahhhh. Brilliant name, Kai. Suits you." The Doctor cleared his throat. It was a good thing, too, because the next tirade would've made him sputter if he'd been able to talk. As it stood, the older man's eyes went wide.

"HEY," he declared, "you're one to talk. Know so much about time travel, do you?" The stranger bent over so that he was eye-level and jabbed a finger in Kai's direction. "I'll have you know that she has a chameleon circuit. Disguises herself, she does. Every time she lands, she surveys the terrain and in an instant picks a disguise."

A disguise that was the same every time. The Doctor didn't share that part; cheeky little bugger would probably latch right onto that tidbit and mock him with it. Some things really never changed.

"Besides, I don't really do 'sneaky.' Well. Sometimes I do sneaky, and sometimes I don't. There's a time for sneaky, and there's a time for barging right in and saying 'HELLO.'" For emphasis, the Doctor spread his arms. "And this is most definitely a time for 'hello.' Come along, Kai, I've something to show you."

Disbelief in time machines indeed. The Doctor straightened up, stomped over, and tossed open the door to the TARDIS. "She's gorgeous. Take a look."

Kai just gave him a confused look. "Knew it? How could you know it? I've never seen you before in my life!" And what was with the sudden change in accent- or attitude for that matter with the also sudden switch to being complimentary? The longer Kai was around the Doctor, the weirder he decided he was.

"You make it sound like I'm a time traveler," Kai grumbled, standing as straight as he could to try and gain a little bit of height. A chameleon circuit? Well, at least the name made sense. He just quirked an eyebrow at the time traveling machine. "I'm not sure it's working. I don't think it's very normal for a police box to be in a garden, do you?"

Before Kai could comment on that and ask why it was so necessary for this to be a 'hello,' the Doctor opened the doors to the police box. He took a few tentative steps forward, staring inside of it with confusion. That didn't look like a police box on the inside at all! He glanced at the Doctor with that same confused expression before stepping inside.

It was massive! It looked like something out of a book- all growing green light and copper panels and some strange looking control panel a level above the door. Kai quickly went back outside, scampering around the police box just to make sure that it really was just as weird as he thought it was, his fingers trailing along the wood as a reassurance that this wasn't all some illusion. After squinting at it for another moment, he scurried back inside, this time walking around it, still trailing his fingers along the walls. He nearly tripped on the stairs but put out his other hand to catch himself, continuing to run around the place. An expression of awe had quickly replaced his confusion, and that was quickly replaced by the largest smile that had ever crossed his face.

For what was possibly the first time in his life, Kai completely forgot about his pride and stubbornness as he ran back to the Doctor. Normally he never would have been okay with admitting he was wrong, but this? This was so amazing he would gladly admit it. "You- you really have a time machine!" His hands were flailing through the air as he tried to express just how excited he was. "I mean, it's way too small on the outside, and this makes no sense at all, but I don't care! You- you're a time traveler. Wooow."

He just stared at him for a moment and then plopped on the floor, trying to absorb all of this new information. Everything he knew about the world- all that he'd learned through school and his books- was completely wrong. In a matter of minutes, his life had been turned on his head.

Oh, how he loved this part. The Doctor loved the 'bigger on the inside' moment. Even when he acted as if he didn't, that the repetition of the same words bothered him, deep down he absolutely adored the looks on peoples' faces. Kai did not disappoint.

"I am indeed." He confirmed. He tried not to be smug about it, but he couldn't help but smirk a little. Gotcha. "This beauty is the TARDIS. Stands for 'Time and Relative Dimension in Space.' She can go anywhere - any point on Earth or in space, any point in time. All you have to do is tell her where. Ah, so to speak - you also have to pull some levers."

He didn't get more specific than that. TARDIS flying lessons were absolutely not on the docket, no matter how cute the kid may've been, no matter how much Lin wanted to take the boy on a whirl and cure that blasted literal streak.

"You can take a look around if you'd like. I will warn, it's bigger than it looks; the wardrobe alone is something of a maze."

The only thing Kai could really do was just stare at the Doctor with that same sense of awe and excitement. "Anywhere?" He breathed as the possibilities whooshed through his mind. "So if you wanted, you could meet Napoleon? Or travel to Pluto? Or- or- or-" He couldn't even figure out what example to use next; there were just too many options to explore for him to pick just one.

"I can?!" Before the Doctor could say anything else, Kai was scrambling to his feet and looking around for the door that lead to the rest of the TARDIS. He couldn't believe that there was more to this place, and he had just been given free rein to run around in it! The second he located it, he was off, whooping and laughing and probably having more fun then he'd ever had in his life. Kai had always been a pretty straight laced kid- been even the most tightly wound child would have let loose at being told they were going to get to look around a time machine.

As Kai ran off, the Doctor and Lin had a moment to confer.

Doctor. Lin began. For once in his life, Caitlin was attempting to be careful with words. There was nothing he could say that the Doctor hadn't already thought of, but the sentiment needed expressing. We can't... can we? We can't take him along.

No. The Doctor was regretful, but firm. He liked children; they carried all of the optimism and promise of the human race, only in tiny unjaded packages. This wasn't something that could be done, though. Every decision in the past affected the future.

And now we're going to have to break it to him.

Yes. The Doctor agreed.

Let me do it? Lin asked.

The Doctor didn't argue, which Lin took as a 'yes.' In spite of Kai's head-start, Lin bounded up the stairs and after the kid. He tried to keep a positive outlook - maybe the boy wouldn't ask to come along. Maybe they could part ways without crushing the kid or creating another Amy Pond scenario.

The last thing Lin wanted was for someone to wind up waiting on him.

There was more to the TARDIS then Kai could have ever imagined, and he had never been happier to come to such a conclusion. Every time he passed by a door he swung it open and peered inside before scampering off to find a new door. He wanted to see everything and he wanted to see it all as fast as he could. Even when running as fast as he possibly could, it just wasn't fast enough for his tastes.

In all likelihood, he would have been more then happy to spend the rest of his life looking at all the different rooms in the TARDIS, until he found one in particular that made him stop. It was a library: huge and magnificent and filled with books and-

... Was that a swimming pool?

He stared at it for a moment, wondering why on earth there was a pool in the library before deciding it wasn't important. There were books to be read- information to be gathered. He all but skipped through it before just picking a spot and plunking down, dropping the book he had been carting around the whole time and grabbing a new one off of the shelf, grinning broadly. Now here was something that would always make sense.

Kai glanced up at the Doctor when he heard him come in, still grinning. "This is amazing. I'm still really confused, and I'm sort of wondering why there's a pool in here, but I guess you probably have a reason. And if you don't, I'm honestly not sure I care anymore. But I do have one question, though." His smile faltered a little as curiosity took it's place- not even his excitement could stifle that part of him, or his more practical side that wanted answers for things. "You said earlier that this was an occasion for a 'hello.' And you're a time traveler, so I was sort of wondering... Do we know each other in the future?" There was no denying the eager look on his face, so out of character for the young boy. Because he couldn't think of any other reason for this man to have come crashing down into his garden and acting so oddly around him- why else would he have come to Kent and invited Kai to look at his TARDIS thing unless they did? Or they were supposed to?

"Time is complicated." Lin began, "and this isn't going to make any sense to you right now, but you and I have a habit of doing things in the wrong order."

May I tell--
Keep it vague, Burns.

"You'll see me again, yes. I can't give you many details because I can't meddle in my own timeline, and I can't take you with me today for that same reason. I am really sorry. Truthfully, I never planned to meddle in your childhood - I was aiming for a different year entirely. Distracted driving, Young Kai. Don't do it."

It was meant to be a joke. None the less, somewhere in the back of the head, the Doctor grumbled. Great. More ammunition for River.

Lin didn't care. This was a little boy, not River Song, and they were telling him that he was going to have to be patient and wait. It was to be done gently, or not at all.

"I don't -- ahhhh. I'm rubbish with a lot of things, including apologies and goodbyes. Tell you what - since you know you'll be seeing me again, think of where you'd like to go. I'll take you somewhere." A pause. "Also, learn to love - or at least tolerate - the fez as a bit of headgear, because I'm standing firm on 'dashing.' They're dashing."

The eager expression on Kai's face soon turned to confusion and then fell completely into a mix of sadness and disappointment. He'd only known this man for a few minutes, and yet he'd already opened his eyes to a whole world of possibilities. Everything was new and exciting and different, and suddenly Kai was actually enthusiastic about something. Before, the only thing he'd cared about was learning, and that had only been a craving to know for the sake of knowing. But now he wanted to see and learn about all this new and exciting things- all these new opportunities that the TARDIS and the Doctor could offer him. But the Doctor was saying no. He had to wait.

"So I can't come with you." His voice was very small, his shoulders hunched forward protectively. He clutched the book in his hands to his chest like it was some kind of shield. "And you can't even tell me when I'll get to see you again. I'm just going to have to wait around for you to show up again."

He nodded somewhat numbly at the promise, his mind working and spinning as he thought. The bit about the fez confused him, but he figured he'd learn about that eventually. He had something more important he wanted to ask.

Setting the book down gently he stood up, looking the Doctor in the eye, a determined look on his face. "But you promise I'll see you again? And-" and this was the tricky bit. He gnawed on his lower lip for a moment. "And when we meet, I was happy to see you, right?" Of course, what he really meant was 'Am I going to become bitter about the wait I'm going to have to sit through?' Because if he knew that, he thought maybe he could be okay with this. Maybe.

"I promise." Lin said. Once again he bent down, hands on his knees, so that he was closer to eye level. "I know this is hard, and believe me, if I could meddle in my own timeline? I would. But there are very good rules against that sort of thing, and very bad things happen when you break them."

So, in a way, the fixation on spoilers made sense. You had to be very sharp and very alert when you went meddling in the pasts of people you'd already met. Still. A word or two of encouragement couldn't hurt, could it?

"You were happy to see me. You were brilliant."

Hmm. He couldn't just leave, could he? Not without a token. "Here. I've something for you." He reached back and dug around in a pocket. Although his fingers were far too big for the ladies' class ring, he still carried it everywhere on the keychain that held the TARDIS key and the keys to his father's front door. He looped the bit of jewelry off and offered it to Kai.

Class of 2003, it read. The school, if Kai were to dig, was located in Toronto. Searching for a 'Doctor' would do no good, though, and Lin's face was nowhere on the student roll. For the first time since it had happened, Caitlin was glad he'd regenerated. He could pass along the memento without passing clues Kai could use to spoil himself (and, for that matter, Lin.)

"To prove you know a time-traveller," he said, simply.

The Doctor's promise did make Kai feel a little better, but not by much, even with him going on to talk about messing with time lines and breaking rules and what not. He understood why- to the Doctor, they'd already gotten to know each other in a certain way, and they couldn't change that. He still didn't like it though.

It wasn't until the Doctor told him that he had- or rather would be- brilliant when they met again that Kai felt a little better. So maybe it wouldn't be too bad of a wait after all. Maybe it wouldn't end up making him angry and bitter and stuff. "I was?" He sounded very, very relieved and a little pleased. "Good. Thank you."

He took the offered ring after just a moment's hesitation, examining it closely. It looked too small to fit on a man's hand, which confused him. Did the ring not originally belong to the Doctor? Either way, he didn't care- it was a gift, and he intended to keep it. He closed his fingers around it and held it against his chest for a moment before looking back up at the Doctor. He couldn't help it when his lower lip trembled just a little, and he leaned forward to wrap his arms tightly around the Doctor's neck.

"I'm going to miss you," he said into the Doctor's shoulder, his voice a little muffled. He barely even knew the man, but he already felt like they'd known each other for years. He didn't want to have to wait for him to show up again, but he would if he had to. But that didn't mean he wouldn't miss him all the same. "Are you really, really sure you can't come back and see me? Or that I can't come with you?"

Okay, this was dreadful. Absolutely dreadful - like Amy Pond but worse, because Pond hadn't been intentional. This time, they were leaving and both Lin and the Doctor knew it. Kai was in for a long, long wait.

As a plus, Lin had wanted to hug the little boy for a solid five minutes, but had feared that such an invasion of personal space would be, ah. Creepy. Now he had an excuse. Poor kid. "I can't. But you've got some good times ahead of you." It wasn't a total lie. Lin didn't know the first thing about Kai's adolescence, but things must've been okay. The boy turned out alright, hadn't he?

"And when we meet again, I can tell you more. I won't have to hedge. I can answer some questions. We can see some things. Just -- look after yourself, okay? You're fantastic. Don't forget it."

Kai just sighed sadly, trying to keep his lip from quivering again. He believed him when he said that there were some good times ahead, but he just wasn't sure how that compared to a TARDIS. "Okay," he said reluctantly. Pulling away after another moment, Kai brought his fist back up to his chest again, still clinging tightly to the ring.

He nodded, at least glad to hear that. "Good. I've got a lot, and I'm probably going to have more. I'll make a journal! Fill it up with all of my questions, and you have to answer all of them." He blinked with surprise at the next part. He'd been complimented before of course, but mostly on his intelligence and book smarts. No one had ever called him fantastic before.

"I- I won't forget it. I promise." He gave the Doctor a tentative smile. Fantastic, huh? A kid could get used to being told that he was fantastic.

Lin actually laughed. A journal? Good heavens, this kid was River Song, wasn't he?

"That sounds perfect. Write them down, keep your journal handy, and there will be an opportunity to ask. You'll know when. I'll tell you."

Because as soon as this was done, Lin was headed straight for Kai's. Well. Perhaps he'd put something up on the journals first - all this I'll just pop in business had turned out to be a little dangerous.

"Okay?" It was both check-in and tentative test to see if Kai was ready to part ways. Lin wasn't callous enough to just shuffle the boy out, but he was starting to get the feeling that sticking around would only do more damage.

Kai nodded again, a little more eagerly this time. He doubted he'd go anywhere without that journal, or the ring in his hands. He could tell that this was the start of something very important, and he was going to treat it as such.

"Okay." Kai could tell that the Doctor was meaning to go now, and while he was reluctant to be left behind, he knew that if he stayed much longer there's no way he'd be able to willingly leave the TARDIS. "Yeah, I mean... Mum's probably starting to wonder where I am anyways, so..." The sniffle had nothing to do with the situation of course. It was dust, or allergies or something.

His return to the front door was nothing like his earlier eager scampering- he was acting more like he was walking to his grave, actually. He stopped when they got back to the front room, giving it a hard look and trying to commit it to memory. He had a feeling it was going to be the last time he saw it for a while. Finally, he turned to the Doctor and gave him one last quick hug around the middle.

"I won't forget you, ever. I promise."

Oh, great. Guilt city. Lin lifted a hand to pat at Kai's shoulder when the boy hugged him. He didn't really know what to say, so he forced a big, cheeky, cheerful grin. If there was one thing the Doctor could do? It was fake a happy face. Noooo. Everything's fine.

Lin had learned from the best.

"Believe me, I'm not going to forget you either."

He did not tell the boy that he'd see him soon. From Lin's perspective it was absolutely true, but it still felt like telling a lie.

"Good," Kai said with another sniffle as he pulled away. "Because I'll be really mad if you do." He smiled back at the Doctor, though it was less the same cheeky grin and more of a sort of watery imitation of the thing.

He started towards the door again, and then glanced over his shoulder to say one last thing. "I'm not going to say goodbye. Because it isn't. So... See you later."

And without another word he slipped out of the TARDIS and back into the chilly night air, trying very hard to convince himself that his stinging eyes was because of the cold. It didn't work very well. He stood a little bit away from the TARDIS and just stared at it, wondering what was going to happen now.

It started with the sound - that vrrrrrwwwww thrumming that had announced the TARDIS's arrival - and the box began fading in and out in time. After a few seconds, the blue object was gone, leaving behind poor Aunt Mildred's ruined turnips.
