"What? Ew," Claire's face twisted up in a comical expression of disgust at the mere idea of being married, or saddled with kids by now. Not that she was against either as a concept. Did she want to get married someday? Definitely. Did she want to also have kids? Probably! But she wasn't even twenty-one yet, and those two things seemed like they should still be at least a couple of steps ahead of her. Maybe ten steps.
Sure, Caroline had done both when she was still pretty young, but she'd also already been a vampire, so it didn't count! Don't ask, it's complicated.
Actually, Caroline's rotten luck with the institution of marriage and her weird pregnancy situation should only be even more of a reason for Claire to stay far, far away from both for as long as she possibly could. No thank you! Not for her, not right now. If that made her a spinster, then she was happy to be one, if only because the way he said it didn't sound all that bad.
Taking a clumsy drink of her half-spilled cocktail to try (and fail) at covering up her reaction, Claire barely tasted the liquid while it slid down her throat as she swallowed. That was probably a bad sign, but whatever. It kept her warm and a little less aware of his strangely watchful eye. Admittedly she hadn't really seen too much of him to actually know what he was like, but she hadn't expected a vampire in a rock band to be so... well, nice. Maybe it was a European thing.
"Nope, no squalling brats for me, no thank you," Claire told him, the word 'squalling' falling out of her mouth like she'd never said the word before in her life. She very likely hadn't. "Though I do have a niece! She's pretty cute, you know, for a baby. You've probably seen her if Léon's brought her around. Léon's my brother. Which... you probably already know. I'm talking too much, aren't I."
