They'd been on the trail for almost three months now. It was supposed to only be a two-month-long mission, tops, but unsurprisingly, it was rare that anything ever actually went according to plan. In this case? Their mission had gone severely off course about a month ago.
Camelot had caught wind of a bunch of Resistance cells popping up with renewed force all over the middle parts of the United States. Go figure, Gabe had thought. It was no surprise to him to find out that the more outwardly racists states in the country were also magnets for the Resistance's more extreme schools of thought. If they weren't just prejudice against reincarnates, they were prejudice against reincarnates they thought were inferior.
Same old shit, just a different kind of fascism.
What should have been a straight forward mission turned into a wild goose chase, after two months of closing in on the leaders of the cell, only to end up following them across state lines all the way back to California. Could have been worse, at least they weren't stuck anywhere in a shit ton of snow this time. After their last mission, Gabe wasn't sure he'd ever feel his own ass again.
Anyway, if you thought things had already gone down hill by the time they had crossed into Southern California, you would be wrong. Actually, everything kind of went sideways once the car chase started.
Gabe was a good driver, but even he had his limits. When it was a choice between getting forced off the road or a controlled crash, he had to choose the latter after a high speed chase through the Hollywood Hills that nearly took them off the side of a cliff when they got ambushed by a second car out of nowhere. Not awesome. Even more not awesome? Trying to maintain control of a car while careening down the side of a hill with nothing but dumb luck on your side.
Good thing dumb luck seemed to be both his and Matt's specialty.
He’d waited until the last second before jerking the wheel hard to the left and pointing them straight down an embankment on the opposite side of the road, timing it just right so that the car behind them swerved too hard to follow and got t-boned by an oncoming truck. Driving down the side of a hill? Gabe wasn't so sure he wouldn't have preferred getting t-boned, but it was too late to change course now. All he could do was hold onto the wheel so hard his hands hurt and try not to drive them straight into a tree before they finally came to a brutal stop, wedged in between a couple of bushes. Not the best landing, but both he and Poe had done worse. Still probably would have been handy to have a Jedi in their back pocket right about then.
They were a little banged up, nothing to write home about. Gabe was pretty sure his neck and his back were going to be sore as hell the next day, but they had more pressing things to worry about. Such as the fact that they'd crash landed right in the middle of Resistance territory, and had totaled their only means of a quick escape. Not his car, thank god, just some poor sap's who had the misfortune of leaving their car out on the street when two passing Camelot operatives needed something to hot wire on the fly. Even if they left a note it would probably be days before anybody found this thing. Regardless, they needed to find cover and fast.
"You sure this is where the guy lives?" Gabe sounded skeptical only because they'd been on the move for what felt like forever (only twenty minutes, but his neck was already starting to feel it) and he was tired of walking. Also tired of having to look over his shoulder every five seconds, because again, sore neck. It was really damn hard to sneak around Los Angeles when so much of it was giant open space and not a lot of things to hide behind, they weren't exactly inconspicuous behind a palm tree. The sooner they got inside and away from all the police sirens and any prying Resistance eyes, the better. Gabe groaned dramatically as they rounded another corner onto a mercifully less populated street. "Think my ass is broken." He was starting to notice a trend on these missions and he didn't like it.
