Watching Jack dismantle his maze just to get to the couch was some of the best entertainment Gabe had ever witnessed. Not just because he had also heard the "sorry, maze," and thought it was weirdly adorable, but also because every time the other man bent or twisted a certain way to grab another piece of furniture, Gabe got an exceptional view of his backside. Even in sweatpants that was an ass that just didn't seem to quit.
So sue him, he'd gotten hit in the head, not temporarily blinded. It was hard not to notice.
He was saved by the realization that he still had at least half of Matt's attention, focusing on that as Jack finished unearthing the couch and returning his friend's look of bemusement with a grin of his own. It'd been a pretty crazy night and had only gotten crazier, but having Matt with him already did a lot to make Gabe feel more relaxed. As relaxed as he could feel after being in a car crash and having to navigate confusing thoughts about the hot guy they were taking shelter with while his brain wasn't functioning at one hundred percent. Gabe was doing his best.
Gabe watched Jack leave the room, only half-hearing Matt at first as he responded. "I don't know, he seems pretty cool..." Trailing off before he realized he'd officially called Jack 'cool' twice in one night, Gabe felt himself flush and hastily glanced back at Matt, but his friend was already in full relaxation mode on the couch with his eyes closed. With any lucky he was already half-way to sleep mode too and didn't have enough brain cells to listen to Gabe's concussion fueled stupidity. Maybe Jack was a little weird, and definitely kind of crazy, but it barely even registered to Gabe considering how crazy his entire life was.
As comfortable as the couch looked, Gabe was afraid if he made himself too comfortable he'd actually be in danger of falling asleep, which he was pretty sure was a big concussion no-no. So he stayed put in his chair, but the sight of Matt on the couch with Lucky curled up next to him brought a genuine smile to Gabe's face that was pretty rare.
Nobody who was actually sane chose this kind of life, he knew that. And they definitely didn't sign up for the kind of missions that he and Matt found themselves on, but Gabe did. He could lie to everyone else and say that he'd signed up because of Matt, but the truth was, a twisted part of himself needed the rush of a dangerous mission just to keep his head clear. That was the kind of thing Gabe didn't spend a whole lot of time deliberately thinking about though, but it was always there, just underneath the surface of every rush of adrenaline during a mission.
He wouldn't still be doing it without Matt, though. Wouldn't have wanted to be in the drivers seat if Matt hadn't been sitting right next to him despite how that had ended, and the pain that was radiating throughout his body was easier to stand now that he could see his friend was fine too. Bumped and bruised, but fine, and now slumped on Jack's couch with a dog's head in his lap. That was nice to see. Matt deserved something nice, even if his buddy likely wouldn't agree with him.
Mustering the strength to finally shrug his jacket off (and immediately wincing at the unwanted movement in his shoulders and neck), Gabe managed to bunch it up and stick it behind him to use as a buffer between him and the back of the chair with a relieved sigh. "We gotta convince Freya to switch teams," he said as much to Matt as he did to the room in general, talking just to keep himself awake. "Everything's easier with a Jedi."
