Who: All the HP people in Camelot Magics! (Rowan's instructing, everyone else gets to partner up in two's. Don't worry about labeling the subject line, but every dueling pair should have a separate subthread so Rowan can intervene on all of them with his pointers.)
What: Some good, old fashioned DaDa training
Where: Camelot Magics Department
When: Monday, December 12th, 2016
Warnings: Nothing major, probably.
It had been slow going, getting back to some semblance of normal after everything that had happened over the last month or so. For Rowan, he'd gone from being deathly ill to some sort of fairy tale alternate reality where he was some kind of captain of the guard and in an illicit affair with Atticus Drake. He hadn't brought it up with Atticus yet. That was just him being cowardly, Rowan couldn't deny that, but he also couldn't deny the fact that he remembered everything. Every excruciating detail, and Rowan being Rowan, he felt horribly guilty about it. Rowan hadn't told anyone, except for Drei, and Rowan almost felt worse because it had been so obvious to him that Drei was hiding how he really felt about it. But Rowan couldn't force Drei to talk about it, and things between them already seemed to have leveled out since then. It was just Rowan's own guilty conscience that was still a cloud over his head and their relationship, but he didn't know what to do about that. It was how he and Remus had always been, they were the best at inflaming that chip on their shoulders, and burying themselves in work to avoid their problems instead of confronting them.
For Rowan, that used to be his day job at the NYPD, but lately? His extracurriculars had started to more closely resemble Remus's, which is how he'd found himself here. Everyone had arguably been through a lot in the last handful of weeks, Rowan wasn't the only one, and life didn't stop just because things had temporarily imploded. There were still threats specific to their group in particular that were as dangerous as ever, completely separate from the dangers that they'd just faced. There was still the reality that there were reincarnates of death eaters and a Dark Lord out there that meant them harm and weren't going to just disappear, and one of them had already attacked Azalea once. Who knows what they would attempt next, and now more than ever, Remus wasn't comfortable leaving these kids unprepared, and as usual, Rowan agreed with him. Which is how they'd ended up here, on a Monday after official department hours, clocking in some extra training time.
The things they all learned and did with the rest of the Magics department were certainly valuable and worthwhile, but it was still a fact that the way their brand of magic worked differed greatly from the sort of magic that other people in the department could do. Since their enemies were already known to be out there, and presumably well trained, Remus and Rowan both thought that their group of reincarnated friends could benefit from some more focused training that was specific to their kind of magic, just so hopefully everyone would be as prepared as they could be when facing these potential threats. They'd done this sort of training at Hogwarts itself in the past, though that had been far less official, but since they were all in Camelot now and Zane had given them permission to make use of one of the Magics rooms after hours, it felt like a good opportunity.
"I think we've all mastered the basics. You all know that when in doubt, Expelliarmus is a good fall back for a more defensive tactic. Disarming your opponent can give you the edge you need, but it's important to start mastering some more offensive spells. Our enemies won't wait for us to catch our breath, they'll attack ruthlessly, and we need to be ready to attack back." Rowan looked out sternly at the pairs in the room. He wasn't very comfortable in the position of any sort of teacher, so he was mostly relying on Remus for the coaching, but he at least knew what he was talking about when it came to spells. He'd been a reincarnate long enough, longer than some of the people in this room, so it was very likely that he'd already had more practice with some of these. Turning to Wyatt, who he'd strategically positioned ten feet from himself, Rowan pointed his wand at him and gave his wrist a harsh flick as he uttered, "Stupefy," in a commanding tone without warning that hit Wyatt with a powerful blast.
Maybe it was a little bit cruel to use your own friend as a test dummy, but he'd agreed to it as a consenting adult, and Rowan knew that Wyatt could take it. As his friend flew back another ten or fifteen feet, Rowan turned to the rest of the group, seemingly unconcerned. "Alright, everyone. Wands up and pick a partner. Practice this one with each other for a few minutes and then we'll pair it with a shielding charm, before we move onto a few of the heavier jinxes. I'll walk around and check in on all of you while you practice these. Wyatt, when you're done walking it off, partner up with Phoenix."
