New life, new job
Fred hadn't slept much the night before. She found herself staring up at the ceiling, almost studying the tiles. It was a different pattern from the one in their old apartment. The squares were a different size and their shapes didn't look right. The mathematical part of her mind wanted to take all of them down and fix them. Squares were supposed to be squares, not mutated shapes. But she didn't. Instead, she laid there and stared upwards while listening to Wesley breathe. She wanted to ask if he was awake but if she did, it would open up a night long conversation where they would mull over all the "what-ifs".
What if they were making a mistake? What if they were putting them and their daughter in danger? What if, what if what if...
But they had to trust Angel. They were all friends and they had all decided to this together. After their tour of the firm, it was decided they were coming there together. The decision start a whirlwind of changes for all of them. The hotel was closed up and all of them moved into new homes. Fred and Wesley had found a nice house in a quiet neighborhood. It was something they had always wanted, especially for their daughter Regan. She needed to yard to play in and a room big enough to hold all of her toys, books and clothes. Plus, it was nice to live normally for once.
Still, Fred was worried.
When morning came, Fred got out of bed and started to get ready before helping Regan get cleaned up and dressed. They had breakfast in their new kitchen and they took their new SUV to the firm. As they parked in the parking garage, Fred sat in her seat for a moment before looking at her husband. Without saying a word, she got out and grabbed her small box that held a few knick-knacks and pictures for her new office. And once Regan had taken Wesley's hand, Fred started toward the elevator.
"Is Lorne going to be here?" Regan asked, breaking the silence.
"Remember what we told you, Regan? You only stay with people you know, okay?" Fred said, hoping their daughter would actually listen and not get herself in trouble.
"Yes! Is Angel going to be there?" she asked.
"I'm sure the both of them are there," Fred said as the elevator doors opened.
"Heya, Fred!"
Fred jumped when she saw Knox standing there. She really didn't like him.
"Hey, Knox," she muttered.
"I have everything set up for you and we have a small problem with one of the machines," he said while bouncing on the balls of his feet.
Fred nodded and looked at her husband and daughter. "I should help him. I'll be down later to take Regan for the afternoon," she said before leaning down to kiss her daughter on top of the head. "Behave." She then looked at Wesley before leaning over to softly kiss his lips. "I'll call you later. I love you both."
She turned to Knox and followed him toward the lab. Halfway up the stairs, she turned around and looked at Wesley and Regan. Fred really hoped they were doing the right thing.
