Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:arlo, olivia, z - 1st tribe - day 07

I'm not a bird. I don't belong in trees.
Who: Olivia & Arlo
When: Day 7 - evening
Where: The climber tree
What: Finding a spot to sleep
Rating: PG-13 (for language, mention of self harm)

Perhaps it was a personal choice, but Olivia would rather risk getting eaten alive by sleeping on a lower branch, than risk falling to her death from a higher branch and being eaten alive while she was in too much pain to fight back. Air was like water. It provided no support. If you're falling water and air don't lend you a helping hand to get you back on your feet. If it wasn't for solid ground you'd keep falling and falling and never stop. So therefore, solid ground was the nicest thing in the world.

But everyone had made the importance of sleeping in a tree rather clear and so Olivia had forced herself to climb up onto one of the lower branches her first night there. She hadn't gotten any sleep, but that was common for her. On the streets she was always alert, which meant she was a light sleeper. While some other homeless people had become heavy sleepers so they could sleep through the sound of traffic and whatever other noises filled New York city at night, Olivia had done the opposite. She was always prepared for an attack and most often, an attack came. Her nights were always filled with pain and fear, which was probably why the sound of the Laughers a few feet below where she had been sitting wasn't so frightening.

That night she had planned to spend her time on the same branch and as long as she was silent and perfectly still nobody would notice where she was. Quietly she pulled herself up onto the lower branch and settled down against the thick tree trunk. She then wrapped her tiny arms around the trunk, because no even though she wasn't very far from the ground, it was still the scariest thing in the world. She could handle the abuse, the fear and the pain of living on the streets, but get her off of the ground and she was the most frightened thing in the world.

Arlo was grudgingly making his way back towards the climber tree. Night was falling, and yes, those crazy fucking things would be coming out to play. He had seen what they did. He did not plan to sleep just yet, but he knew it was not good to be out where the Laughers could get you. Still, hiding away in that big tree felt so...damn...useless. The last thing he wanted to be was useless.

He saw the figure of a girl in the lowest brance on the tree, clinging to the trunk. The fuck was she doing? Girls. Everywhere he was surrounded by girls - women or assholes or both. Where was the fucking sanity? Probably not on the big purple hell planet, Jesus.

"Evenin'" he barked. The woman was not one he recognised. She was...smaller. Not in physical size so much as she just had this air of a tiny little thing. He wondered when she had arrived.

His voice nearly sent Olivia falling out of the branch as she jumped. Anything that happened suddenly, no matter how innocent, startled her. Quickly she grasped the trunk of the tree again, her heart pounding in her chest as her arms and legs started to shake.

"I..I.." she started, stuttering nervously as she struggled to form a sentence, or even a single word. Slowly she hugged herself closer to the trunk, shying away from him as if he was waving around a knife and threatening to chop her into pieces. To Olivia everyone was a threat and this strange and scary looking man was no exception.

"Am-am I in the..the w-way?" she stammered, looking frightened as she pressed her body against the tree, hoping that if she tried hard enough she would disappear inside it.

Arlo raised an eyebrow at the over-reaction to his appearance and bizare question.
"In the way of what? Ain't nothin' you're in the way of right now - but you shouldn't sleep there if that's what you're planning honey. Laughers will think you're very much in the fuckin' way"
His tone was gruff, but not as agressive as usual. He could appreciate he had startled her - she looked terrfied. Fear was the correct sort of reaction for a young girl turning up in this dump. She just seemed a little...too scared, considering there was nought but him and a tree in the area, and neither were much of a threat.

Olivia glanced up at the tree, her eyes growing wide as she shook her head and looked back to him. Her gaze settled somewhere over his shoulder, since she wasn't one to ever make eye contact. There had been too many occurrences where she had gotten hurt for making eye contact with a person when it wasn't welcome.

"I-I can't go up.. up there.." she said weakly, unwrapping one arm from the trunk just long enough so she could point at the higher branches before hugging the tree again. "I-I'll f-fall." It wasn't a question of if she would fall or not, she knew she would fall. What goes up, must come down.

Shyly she nuzzled the side of her face against the waxy surface of the tree trunk, enjoying the feeling of the smooth surface against her bruised face. "I-I'm not going to sleep," she added. "I-I don't have to sl-sleep. Never ever."

Her behavior was childlike, even though she was no longer a child. She had never learned how to grow up, even though the situations she faced everyday of her life were very adult situations.

He snorted. yeah, okay, she was cracked. She was scared, sure, but obviously that rendered her completely useless, which wasn't cool. Why did women have to be so completely incapable? Whatever. Arlo wasn't about to let some scared girl get ripped to shreds by those things and end up a bloody smear at the base of a tree.

"Everyone gotta sleep, what sort of a dumb ass thing is that to say? Unless you're a robot and that I very much doubt, 'cause robots are meant to be smart."

He moved closer to the tree and peered at her. She had obviously takena beating. That made his stomach churn - you didn't beat women. It wasn't right. You didn't hit anyone who couldn't hit back just as hard.

"You ain't gonna fall. There's a balloon of a baby-filled lady been sleeping in these trees and that bitch ain't fallen so I don't see why you should. Now get on up."

"She-she must not be b-bad," Olivia said simply, shrinking away into a tiny ball as he moved closer to her branch on the tree. "If-if she was b-bad she would fall."

In Olivia's mind there were three types of people. Those of the male sex, and then females who were good and females who were bad. Olivia had been fooled into thinking she was in the last group and everyone else was in one of the first two groups.

"I-I'll fall," she repeated, just as softly as before. Finally she leaned forward a little, letting the lifeless gaze of her eyes meet his face. "Are-are you mad?" she asked curiously.

Arlo was not the king of tact. He did not really know how to deal with the crazy and the scared. He tipped his head and frowned at her.
"Psht, Rowan? She's about as fuckin' wonderful as they get."
The sarcasm dripped. He really didn't like that woman. Too much mouth. But this girl here was the task at hand.

It was really begining to get dark. He'd seen and smelt the insanity that came with the darkness and the creatures in this place. No, it wasn't going to happen. Was she asking if he was mad because someone else had been? True enough he hadn't met everyone - there could be some dangerous motherfuckers lurking in the tall grass.
"You're a god-damn fruitcake. Who's been beating up on you? Someone here? I'll kick their ass."

Olivia titled her head to one side, trying to figure out what she had to do with cake. If it was an insult it didn't make sense to her, mostly because cake wasn't something that homeless prostitutes got very often. In fact she hadn't had cake since she was a young girl in foster care and she remembered that it had been good, which meant that him calling her a fruitcake must be a good thing. She bit her lip, still confused by it all.

"N-nobody here." she told him finally. "Where I w-was be-before here," she added, giving a tiny shrug before hugging the tree trunk again for safety. "B-but he said I de-deserved it. That-that's what all of them s-say," she explained, clearly convinced that if more than one person had told her she deserved it, then she must deserve it.

"Are you mad?" she asked again, unable to move on from the question without an answer.

To be honest, Arlo was mad. He was always pretty pissy though, so it had very little to do with the girl other than that her absolute pathetic refusal to do what he said was bothering him. As were the bruises on her face. He hated that. He fucking hated scumbags who did that.

"I'm not angry at you, calm the hell down. I'm just sayin' you gotta get in that tree. I'll be fuckin' mad if you get mauled in the night and I gotta clean up the splatter, okay? No-one here's gonna beat on you, why're you being such a moron about keeping yourself safe?"

Way to not sound angry, Arlo. He was pretty unaware of how threatening he could sound, but yeah, softly softly wasn't his style.

Olivia flinched. Even though he said he wasn't angry, his words and tone of voice convinced her otherwise. Her eyes stung with tears as she nuzzled her face against the tree again in an attempt to hide. If she couldn't see him, then he couldn't see her. Or something like that.

"P-please don't hurt m-me," she whispered in a terrified voice as she peeked over at him through the dark strands of hair that covered her face. "I-I won't sp-splatter," she promised, as if she had control over how the Laughers would kill her.

She knew she would rather get killed by the Laughers than climb the true and face the tiny risk of falling.

Arlo sighed with exhasperation and rolled his eyes. He was standing much closer to her now, his arms folded.

"Oh for...look, missy. I ain't gonna hurt you. I don't know what sorta time you've had before but I ain't like that, alright? You worried about gettin' hurt then you oughtta get up on in that tree and stay outta the way of the god-damn Laughers that come out. It's gettin' dark and I ain't gonna argue much longer. What's your name, anyhow?"

"Olivia," she replied faintly. "Ju-just Olivia. That-that's all I know," she added, unaware that she most likely sounded like a fool rambling on like that. "B-but you can call me what-whatever you w-want," she added.

"I don't mind getting hurt," she told him in a very honest voice. "I-I get hurt a-a lot," she said simply. It was true, she did get hurt a lot. She either got hurt by another person because they thought she was bad, or she hurt herself because she thought she was bad.

"Well, Olivia, if you don't mind gettin' hurt, where's the big scary in falling out of a tree? I'm sick of you girls with your false fuckin' bravado."

He scowled at her. She made him feel very angry at the world. Angry that there were people who got treated like that. As much as he figured women should shut up and know their place and quit being so fucking...dumb...he didn't wish harm on them. You oughtta watch out for your girls. He couldn't look after his right now and it killed him.

"I'm Arlo, by the way. Arlo Thayer. From Texas."
He added them all as an afterthought. Introductions sucked.

"Be-because I won't know," Olivia stuttered weakly. "I-I'll be f-falling and I w-won't know what's going to hap-happen. When people hurt me, I-I know it's going to hur-hurt. But if I'm f-falling I-I won't know wh-what's going to happen until it's already hap-happened."

She had put a lot of thought into this. She hated the unknown. The thought of experiencing something new was frightening. Her entire life was a routine. Wake up on the street, find something to eat out of a trashcan, go to the park, go to a hotel with a strange man, go back out onto the street and sleep. If she changed her routine, would somebody take her place? If she climbed the tree and fell, would she die? That wouldn't be so bad. What if she didn't die? What if she broke both her legs? She'd be alive, but useless.

"I-I'm from New-New York," she added as she slowly inched along her branch, closer to where he was standing. Curiously she leaned to look at him more closely in the darkness, her dark hair falling across her black eye and swollen cheek. "Are you a bad man?" she asked simply, as if she was asking him something as normal as the time.

"What are you jabbering about? I already said I ain't gonna hurt you, you want me to stamp it on my fuckin' forehead for your reference?" Bad man? What was she, nine? He remebered telling Laurel never to talk to strangers in case they were bad people. That if someone ever tried to hurt her he'd kill them. Flat out. This girl had obviously never had that. He ground his teeth. People ought to take care of their children, not abandon them. Leave them lost without last names to get covered in nasty bruises. Scum. He pulled himself onto the branch to join her, wincing slightly at the effort - he was in decent shape sure, but he was still pushing 40, and a love of Texan cuisine hadn't exactly given him washboard abs.

"You don't know what'll happen when a Laugher gets you, either, sugar. You'll be ripped into tiny pieces, sure, but how long's it gonna take? They gonna be chewing down on ya while you're still alive? You even got a weapon that would work against 'em for sure? It's a whole new world of danger. It's not pretty. Now are you going to get into that tree or not? It's gettin' dark and I wanna get up there myself. We gotta keep sensible fuckin' heads on our shoulders in this place."

Not that her sex often found being sensible was something they could do. Olivia was clearly no exception. A timid bag of bones, too stupid to take care of herself.

Olivia drew back again when he pulled himself up onto the branch. She had a firm belief that anyone within a foot of her was only that close because they wanted to hurt her in one way or another. Nervously she fidgeted, unwrapping her arms from the tree as she slowly slid her fingers under one of the sleeves of her jacket, just enough to dig her sharp nails into her wrist. Pain was a familiar feeling, and while she did not enjoy it, it helped to remind her that even though she was in a different place, some things were still the same.

"I-I have a knife," she said in response to having a weapon. She slipped a hand into the pocket of her jeans, pulling out a handful of dried flowers along with a small pocket knife. Carefully she put the flowers away, before holding the knife out for him to see. It wasn't exactly the best weapon in the world, however it was covered with blood that had dried and caked off in some spots. Unfortunately it was all her blood, as she never would dare to hurt another person.

"You-you can go up, but-but I'm going to stay here," she told him in a soft, yet stubborn voice.

He eyed the knife. Blood. That was, uh, not great. But she was hardly threatening. He very much doubted there was ever going to be a girl who managed to stick him like a pig. Especially not one as wretched as this.
"You stab someone? Hell, never mind, don't even answer that - you don't need that here though, alright? Give me the damn knife, doubt you even know how to work it properly. Shit."
He held out a hand to take the thing from her. Her having it made him uneasy not because he thought he might stab her, but because he didn't like to see a person who was so blatently a useless liability armed. It seemed like a waste or something. And he was also damned if he was going to let her sleep down here on this branch - but that was an issue he'd address after the blade.

Olivia quickly hugged the knife against her chest, not willing to give it up easily. "But.. but it's mine," she said, as if the knife was her most treasured possession. It most likely was, as it was the only thing she owned. "I-I didn't stab any-anyone," she adde, even though he told her not to answer.

"I-I know how to use.. use it," the brunette explained, drawing away as he held out his hand. Her entire body flinched as if she had just been hit. "Do.. do you want to see?" she asked, before easily opening the blade of the small knife with one hand, while she pushed up her dirty and ripped Army jacket sleeve with the other. Her slender wrist was covered in bruises, scars, cuts and scratches, all of them different ages. She extended her arm, as if to let him admire her knife skills. "If.. if I give it to..to you. wh-what will happen when I'm b-bad?" she asked weakly.

He stared at her arm rather blankly. That was a stupid thing to do. She was obviously insane. Arlo could only really think how ill-equipped he was to deal with a crazy girl. He didn't know a damn thing about her, how was he meant to calm her down?

He sighed.
"Well there's a sure fire way to prove you don't know how to work it. The point is you get the sharp part in the other guy. You're beyond crazy, sweetheart. Now let's get you up this tree."
Not unkind, but no-nonsense. Impatient. Arlo was sick of her. He'd have words with Helena as soon as he got the chance regarding Olivia - someone more fucking maternal ought to keep tabs on this sort of bullshit.

Olivia pulled her sleeve back down over her arm. Her head tilted to one side again as she heard him sigh. That was a sure sign that she was bothering him. Tears welled in her lifeless eyes as she looked down. "I-I'm sorry," she told him faintly as she nuzzled her bruised face against the tree again, enjoying the feeling of the cool surface against her injured skin.

"I-I would never ever hurt some-somebody," she told him honestly. "Girls aren't supposed to hurt anybody," she added, not stuttering for once. She had heard those words so many times that they had been brainwashed into her head.

Well, okay, good. There was something they agreed on at least.

"Yeah. They're not. Girls oughtta do what they're told - shame you don't ever find one that does. So if you're so hellbent on being a good girl, just...do what I say. Climb the tree. I don't wanna ask again."

He gritted his teeth at how abysmal he was at this kind of thing. Placing a hand on her arm he tried to sound comforting (but probably sounded more awkward and weird) "Don't cry?"

Olivia blinked, as if she could stop crying just because he had said to. And in a way she could, because the fear of what would happen to her if she wasn't obedient was much more frightening than the reason why she was crying.

"I'm s-scared," she whispered, drawing back as he placed his hand on her arm. She didn't like being touched, even if she was a prostitute. "I-I don't w-want to go up there. It's too high."

Arlo sighed again. This was becoming a bigger pain in the ass than he could be bothered with. He looked at the girl for a moment, and then...well, he rushed her. She was clearly a lot smaller and weaker than him, and he very much doubted if she had it in her to struggle all that much. With one smooth swooping movement he swept the fragile girl over his shoulder into a fireman's lift, and pulled himself up to his full height. Talking wasn't getting them anywhere, and if she couldn't haul her ass up the tree? He'd haul it for her. Words were not what Arlo did best, after all. Arlo prefered the direct route to getting things done.

"Sorry about this sweetheart, I still ain't gonna hurt you, but it's gettin' dark fast and I ain't puttin' up with anymore nonsensical whining."

Hell. he used to carry a protesting Laurel to bed like this all the time. Alright, she'd been a good bit shorter, and carpeted floors were easier to navigate than a big ass tree, but the basic idea was the same.

Olivia's first instinct was to fight until he let go of her, but the moment he straightened up she became too frightened. As much as she didn't want him to carry her, the thought of being dropped was even worse.

Her tiny fingers tightened around the material of his shirt as she gripped it fearfully, afraid that if she let go she would fall. "Pl-please d-don't," she whispered, her eyes suddenly filling with tears again.

Her entire body was trembling as she started to sob, struggling weakly to get down from his shoulder without falling out of the tree. But there was no safe way for her to get down, and she had suffered so many injuries in her life that she was too frail to fight him off. Not that she would anyway if she had the strength. As frightened as she was, and as much as she wanted him to put her down, she was convinced that a man was allowed to do whatever he wanted, even if it involved her body.

Arlo clenched his teeth and kept a firm hold of the struggling girl. Alright, it was a fairly mean thing to do, but someone had to make sure she didn't get eaten, even if she was a crazy irritating dumbfuck.
"Quit your kickin' - it's more likely I'll drop you if you move around. I told you, you gotta get up into the higher branches, and if you refuse to climb then lord help me, I'm gonna haul you. You need to stop bein' such a cowardly little dumbass and do what's good for you on your own if you don't want folks draggin' you around, you hear me?"

She wasn't heavy, but still a burden as he began to pull himself one armed higher into the branches. One of the vine hammocks was only a few feet above them and not too much of a climb - he could deposit her there quite safely and then scramble higher to sleep in the branch above. There was no way he was going to let another person fall victim to those fucking Laughers. So he was going to have to be the bad guy and make her do what she didn't want - fuck it, though. He repeated his mantra internally about not being here to make fuckin' friends and continued the clamber.

Panic was starting to sink in. Olivia was frozen in terror as he continued to climb higher up into the tree. She was completely still, except for the fact that her entire body would occasional tremble as she started to sob. Her face was buried against the material of his shirt, tears soaking the fabric.

She didn't like that he was admitting to the fact that their was a chance he could drop her. That was not something you told a person who was afraid of heights when you had them thrown across your shoulder while you climbed a tree.

"I-I w-want down," she cried weakly, her face still pressed against his body. "I-I'll be good n-now," she promised. "I-I'll do wh-whatever you w-want," she added. However there was a strange tone to her voice as she spoke these last words, as if there was some sort of darker meaning to it. And in a way there was, she would do whatever he wanted, no matter what it was, because the fear of disappointing somebody 'above' her was too much for her to handle.

"What I want is for you to be safe" Arlo said through tightly gritted teeth, not catching the oddness in her tone of voice. He'd stopped really listening to her because she irritated the piss out of him with her damsel in distress bullshit. Not to mention the climb was taking it's toll, but it was nearly over. He finally reached the hammock as he had planned and slung her roughly into it.

"There. Nothin' broken?"

Apart from her fuckin' mental health, apparantly, but there weren't much he could do about that. Apart from maybe make sure she got some sleep and stopped trying to kill herself by sleeping where the Laughers could get her.

"You wanna think about gettin' some shut eye now? And don't try climbing back down because if I have to come and get you again I'm gonna so damn pissed off."

Olivia looked terrified as he dropped her into the hammock, which swayed slightly from the movement. There was a hint of green to her face as she suddenly felt sick, but she was too afraid to move and so she stayed exactly like she had landed.

There were tears streaking her cheeks as she looked up at him. "I-I want down," she cried faintly. "I-I w-want down," she repeated, her arms slowly moving to hug herself across her chest. She dug her nails into the worn material of her jacket sleeves as she leaned to one side, peering down to see how far up they were.

It was clearly a bad idea because the second she leaned over the edge of the hammock she felt uncontrollably sick and threw up. Luckily there was nobody beneath her hammock, except for maybe a Laugher or two down at the base of the tree.

Blinking a few times she looked back up at him. "I-I'm s-sorry," she said, her voice suddenly sounding tired. Usually she could go for days without sleeping, but the stress of being in this strange place was taking a toll on her body. "Are-are you m-mad?"

He sighed. Loudly. Settled somewhat uncomfortabley in the branch above her - he wasn't exactly happy with the sleeping arrangments himself, but what could you do? Find the local Ritz?

"You don't like heights, I get it, I'm sorry you don't, but no-one's gonna die if I can help it, you get me?"

He could hear the exhaustion in her voice, and seeing her vomit made his expression soften...slightly.

"Just. Go to sleep you little idiot. I'll even help you climb down tomorrow morning, how's that?"
