A little pick-me-up for everyone moving into finals season, of whatever stripe: it could probably be worse.
Personally, I've never failed an entire class; using grades as a form of behavior control in higher education seems to me to be entirely senseless, as students who lack the maturity to take their obligations seriously can and should be removed through administrative means. (They often aren't, of course, leaving those of us who've been looking forward to Dr. Glashow's lectures on weak neutral currents since the day we ripped open our acceptance letter no choice but to employ a little self-help. Shout-out to all my classmates in the back row who took an astounding eight weeks to realize someone was using scheduled power outages to set their alarm clocks back by seventy-five minutes.) The highest failure rate I've ever had is 66 percent, and that was a remarkable statistical outlier. I generally shoot for somewhere between 25 and 33.
I would say I'm sure none of you will find yourselves in that 25 to 33 percent, but, of course, 25 to 33 percent of you will. Just remember: someone has to be. One of the wonderful things about education is that it allows you not only the means to discover that which inspires you and at which you excel, but that which does not, and at which you cannot. You're not meant for a career in everything. There are some things that are beyond your capacity. You are unique; you are not special. Read the writing on the wall when it's in front of you, cut your losses, and reap the rewards.
And get plenty of sleep.
