For a moment, all Rose could do was stand there and stare, unable to believe what she was seeing. Dimitri and- She knew things were over between them, she knew he’d said he didn’t love her and she was pretty sure he’d meant it, despite all those moments that gave her cause to doubt he really didn’t feel anything for her, anymore. The way he’d tried to protect her when the royal guard had come to arrest her, the way he sometimes looked at her- But with this, there was no room for doubt. Seeing Dimitri in that position with another woman was like a punch in the face. Or maybe the gut, because Rose seriously felt like she was going to be sick. She turned and walked out of the room with barely a sound, although there were already silent tears swimming in her eyes. Rose’s path was aimless as she walked and then ran up several flights of stairs. She didn’t really know where she was going until she found herself standing in front of Lissa and Christian’s apartment. It made sense. She knew she didn’t want to go home. She didn’t want to go anywhere near the apartment she shared with Dimitri. There, she would have to see him eventually and she didn’t want to face him. Not now, not like this, especially not when he had that stupid ability to sense her emotions now. The tears she’d tried desperately to hold back were flowing freely by the time she knocked on Lissa’s door. Crying wasn’t something she did often or easily. The last time she’d cried had been after that day in the church, when he’d told her he simply didn’t love her anymore. Not didn’t. Not he felt guilty, but that his love for her had simply faded. Any lingering doubts she had over whether he’d meant it were gone now. She crossed her arms in front of her, wrapping them around herself as she waited for Lissa to come to the door. *** Christian was closer to the door when he heard the knock so in his mind it made sense to just go ahead and answer it without telling Lissa what he was up to. He’d figured it was one of their friends but he hadn’t been expecting the sight that greeted him from the other side - Rose crying. He’d never seen her like this before. “Come on in,” he said, pulling the door open the rest of the way and stepping to the side. “Lissa? Can you come here?” he called, shutting the door behind them and locking it. He didn’t know how to deal with Rose crying but he thought his girlfriend might. Rose was Lissa’s best friend after all. *** In the bathroom, Lissa was just throwing her hair into a comfortable ponytail before tackling looking at all of the different things she needed to do for schooling here, she’d signed up for it and thought starting with what was set up before applying to a college here would be the best way to try and start life, or at least try and move forward with it. Lissa still didn’t know exactly how she felt about being here. “Can you get that.” Lissa said as she turned from the mirror and headed out towards where the front door was. She didn’t even need Christian to tell her to come out, she heard the tears, those were Rose’s tears, she knew Rose almost never, ever cried, but she could tell it was Rose just by hearing it. “Rose?” She said rushing forward to pull her best friend into a hug. “What happened?” Lissa asked as angst, worry, and fear started flood her. Whatever happened to Rose, Lissa was just terrified that she was just this upset. Compassion and the intense trust and love Lissa always felt for Rose were surrounding her along with the angst, worry and fear. ~~~ “I- he-” Rose couldn’t really get anything resembling coherent words to come out, even as she tried to explain, and she gave up after a moment. Instead, she sank into the hug Lissa had pulled her into. Lissa’s worry and fear pulsed into her, compounding her own troubled feelings. A part of her knew she didn’t have a right to be upset. She and Dimitri weren’t together, so she really didn’t have a right to care anymore who he was with or what he was doing, right? That didn’t keep it from hurting, though. Worry for Lissa eventually pushed Rose’s grief aside. It was enough to calm her down. Rose knew those feelings in Lissa were all for her right now, but taking care of her was so deeply ingrained in her, that she couldn’t think of herself when she felt like Lissa needed her. Right now, Lissa needed her to calm down, so she took several deep breaths and shook her head. “It’s okay, I’m okay,” she told her shakily. “Calm down, Liss, I’m not hurt, everything’s fine. I just... saw something that upset me.” She would tell her, she wouldn’t keep what she had seen from Lissa, because she’d promise her and herself that she wouldn’t do that anymore, but first she needed Lissa to calm down, too. ~~~ Sometimes Lissa really hated that Rose felt everything she felt, because she knew sometimes it probably was hard for Rose to really focus on her own emotions when Lissa’s were constantly there. She tried to calm herself down more for Rose than for herself at that moment, but all of her worry was about Rose, none of it was about herself. “Rose, what happened?” She repeated the question taking a deep breath to try and steady her own emotions. “Come on let’s going to the living room.” She added putting her arm around Rose to guide her towards the couch. Lissa needed to know what was wrong because she felt like she couldn’t help if she didn’t really know what had happened. “What did you see?” Lissa asked softly full of compassion. ~~~ Rose could feel Lissa’s emotions calm down a little and that helped her to get herself a little more under control. She was still upset by what she’d seen, but with Lissa’s feelings a little less intense, it was easier to deal with. She didn’t have someone else’s emotions compounding her own so much. She let her friend lead her over to the couch or she thought she did, because she just kind of went blindly and didn’t remember actually sitting down until moments later when she realized she was actually sitting there with Lissa’s arm still around her. The scene she’d just witnessed seemed to be playing in a loop in her head and she squeezed her eyes shut, trying to will it away like she would the ghosts that surrounded her if she let down her mental wall that kept them out. If she could do that, she could force herself to stop thinking about this, too, right? “It’s stupid,” she said, feeling a little embarrassed now that she was a little calmer. “He told me he didn’t love me, anymore, so I shouldn’t have really expected him to, like, never move on, and he was with her at New Year’s, so of course they’re-” She was talking more to herself than Lissa, trying to convince herself that it didn’t matter. So, Dimitri was sleeping with someone else. That wasn’t something she really had a right to be upset over anymore. It wasn’t like he hadn’t made it clear before that there would never be anything between them again. ~~~ It was heartbreaking seeing Rose like this, whatever she saw had really hurt her and that made Lissa angry, she was working really hard at keeping her own emotions of it down a little bit at the moment. Lissa’s compassion was overwhelming anything else, and she watched Rose with a strong desire to fix whatever it was that was upsetting her. “Rose….” She whispered as Rose finally seemed to realise where she was again, Lissa really did want to know what happened, but more than that she wanted everything to be okay for Rose. She wanted Rose to be okay. Everything Rose said wasn’t stupid, at all. It did matter, and she really had a hard time believing that Dimitri didn’t love Rose anymore. That was something Liss struggled to believe. “Rose…” Lissa said pulling her into a hug again for a moment trying to comfort her with a hug rather than words. “You have every right to feel what you’re feeling, if you don’t let yourself feel it, it’ll be harder in the long run.” Lissa strongly believed that. ~~~ It was stupid, though. It had been stupid to let herself believe even a little bit that maybe that old connection was still there between her and Dimitri. It had been stupid to think that just because she hadn’t slept with anyone else since him that he was going to stay celibate forever. Like back in school, though, it had been one thing to sort of accept that she couldn’t have Dimitri and another to realize someone else could. Not just to realize it but to have to witness just how much he was moving on with his life without her. Because seeing him with Faith, that really drove home the fact that it wasn’t just that he couldn’t love anyone after what he had been through. It meant he just didn’t love her anymore. He’d said the words in the church and he’d been pretty convincing, but Rose realized she hadn’t really given up on them until that moment, despite trying to make things work with Adrian. “Liss, it’s fine, it’s okay, I know I don’t. He’s not mine anymore. He hasn’t been for a while and it’s time I accepted that and just got over it. He obviously has, so it is stupid for me to be sitting here crying over seeing him like that with someone else.” Maybe if she said the words enough times, she’d start to believe them, but her attempts to be tough about this didn’t stop her from returning Lissa’s embrace and trying to take some comfort in it. She was just feeling sorry for herself, that was it. Because at home, at least Adrian had been there. As horrible and selfish as it sounded, being able to go to him had made her feel wanted. She didn’t have that here, though. All of her friends had someone but her. She told herself it didn’t matter. She told herself she needed to put Lissa first, anyway. If only telling herself that could magically make what she’d seen stop hurting. ~~~ It clearly wasn’t fine, and Lissa hated that she couldn’t do anything about it. She wanted to fix things for Rose, she wanted to make sure that ose was okay and that she wasn’t hurt like this, because she hated seeing Rose hurt, and she hated that Dimitri had done it. Lissa had a hard time believing that Dimitri didn’t have feelings for Rose anymore and that he’d that easily moved on. More than that, Rose had every right to be upset. Frowning a little as Rose tried to be tough, Lissa started to run her fingers through Rose’s hair trying to calm her down but also because Lissa always knew that made her feel better when Rose did that to her. Lissa still wasn’t exactly sure how much Rose had see, but she got enough to get the picture and she didn’t want to make Rose relive it, if Rose wanted to tell her everything she could. “It’s not okay.” Lissa said softly. “But it will be, it’ll be okay, maybe not tomorrow, maybe not next week, but it will be.” Although Lissa still had a really hard time believing that Dimitri had stopped loving Rose, even if he was doing something with someone else, she just couldn’t fully believe it. ~~~ Rose didn’t know if she believed that right now. She knew logically that Lissa was right, but at the moment it didn’t feel like she was going to be okay. It hurt, not matter how much she wanted to pretend it didn’t. Finally facing the fact that it was really, really over hurt. “Can I stay here for a while?” she asked. “I just can’t face him right now.” She didn’t want to see Dimitri right now. Seeing him would just be a reminder and she needed some space. She needed some time away. Maybe a little distance would help her. Maybe if she just didn’t have to look at him and she could distract her with other things, she could get over him, too. “Just for a few days. Maybe I can get another apartment or something.” That probably sounded extreme, but right now it felt like what she needed. Her own space where she wouldn’t have to see him. Or him and her together. ~~~ "You can stay as long as you want to." Lissa said softly, Rose could just move in and take the couch and Lissa would be fine with it. She wasn't going to her best friend no on something like that, there was not a chance in the world that she would do that to her. She would do whatever it took to be there for her and probably go beyond that too if possible. "If you want, maybe we can look into getting a two bedroom too." She offered not wanting to make Rose feel like she had to be on her own. She was pretty sure the apartment next to them was a two bedroom that they could take over if needed and Lissa didn't mind. She didn't think exactly how Christian might feel about that in that moment, but if Rose needed them, Rose needed them and that was that. Lissa wouldn't mind, she knew Rose might want her space, but she was worried about her and didn't want her to be alone. ~~~ Rose nodded her head, relieved that Lissa had agreed to let her stay here and wasn't insisting that avoiding Dimitri wasn't the right thing to do. She knew Lissa would do anything for her, she hadn't really expected her to turn her away, but she also knew Lissa could be really stubborn, especially when she thought Rose was doing something stupid. Maybe they would look into getting a place, the three of them, but for right now she felt better knowing she could just stay here for awhile and she didn't mind the couch at all. Suddenly exhausted from all the crying, Rose leaned against Lissa and took presence just from being near her. She didn't know if it was Spirit or just Lissa, herself, but she felt a little better just sitting next to her. ~~~ (Maaaaybe fast forward to whenever Dimitri comes looking for her? I'm guessing that would be awhile, like at least a few hours, before he realized she hadn't been home/wasn't answering his texts?) (This...will be fun for me to write. Hee.) A few hours later Dimitri didn’t know what was going on with Rose. Of course they hadn’t been spending time together but at least she normally answered his texts and he’d been trying for a couple of hours to get in touch with her without any luck and he was worried. And he knew that even if she wasn’t talking to him for some reason - she’d be talking to Lissa which was why he was knocking on the door to Lissa and Christian’s apartment. He just wanted to know that Rose was okay. *** Christian heard the knock on the door and made his way there, a part of him wondering who it could be this time. He’d overheard bits and pieces of the girl’s conversation even though he hadn’t been trying to listen in so he knew Dimitri had apparently started seeing someone else. And that Rose had seen him with her, and even though she hadn’t come right out and said it he could guess what she’d seen and while part of him didn’t want to believe it - he knew Rose well enough to know that she wasn’t making it up. And he felt like shit for all the things he’d said to Rose about not burning her bridges with Dimitri - if he could go back now and do it over again, knowing what he knew now he’d probably offer to help her do it. He didn’t look to see who it was before opening it and he moved so that he was blocking Dimitri from getting into the apartment, betting on the fact that Dimitri wouldn’t risk hurting him since he was Moroi. “What the hell are you doing here Dimitri? I’m pretty sure Rose doesn’t want to see you again,” he told him, anger obvious in his voice, sure that his voice was carrying back into the apartment for Lissa to hear. *** Dimitri was surprised by Christian’s tone, and the sudden flash of anger he felt in Christian’s feelings towards him, and he stared at him for a minute before speaking. “Rose is here? Is she okay?” He started to take a step towards the door and stopped when he noticed the glare the younger man was giving him. *** “Yeah Rose is here. She showed up in tears after seeing you with your new girlfriend.” Christian told him coldly, eyes locked on Dimitri’s face. “And I’m telling you right now - you try to come in here or to force her to talk to you I will set your ass on fire.” He wouldn’t kill him, hell he wouldn’t even cause him any real permanent damage - but he’d hurt him. Just enough to make sure Dimitri knew he meant it. Rose was Lissa’s best friend. And if Rose was upset - Lissa would probably be upset and Christian hated seeing his girlfriend upset and he’d do anything he could to fix it. Or preferably to prevent it. “Just go Dimitri. Go spend time with Faith or whatever her name is,” Christian said, stepping back from the door and closing it in Dimitri’s face. He made his way back to the living room and looked at Lissa for a second before getting her attention and waving her over as he stepped back into the hall. It looked like Rose was asleep and he didn’t want to talk where he might wake her up. Their bedroom was a good spot for that he figured. *** Lissia hadn't moved off the couch as she was stroking Rose's hair as she slept. Lissa knew how hurt Rose was, and how tired she was. When she heard a knock at the door she knew Christian would get it. He'd mostly left them alone and she was grateful for that. When she heard Dimitri's voice she frowned knowing how much he'd hurt Rose right now. Rolling her eyes as Christian basically snapped at him, she couldn't help the small smile, she didn't think he needed to be that harsh with him, but she did like that he was that protective of Rose too. Especially given how when Lissa first got to know Christian, Rose really didn't like him. Once she heard the door shut she moved very carefully and gracefully away from Rose, pausing to put a blanket over her best friend as she followed Christian to the bedroom. "You didn't have to shut the door in his face." She said leaning over to kiss his cheek softly. ~~~~ Christian gave Lissa a half smile when she gave him a kiss on his cheek. “That’s what you’re going to focus on with what I did?” He’d been expecting her to say something about his threat to Dimitri but if she was focused on him shutting the door in Dimitri’s face - he’d take it. He sat down on the edge of their bed. “I was tempted to slam it in his face but figured that would be worse. How’s Rose? I know she’s upset and I heard why,” he told her. He hadn’t been trying to listen in, he’d actually been trying to find ways to not hear what was being said but that was easier said than done with how good Moroi hearing was. *** If Lissa said something every single time he threatened someone, well that would be a lot… In this case she didn’t actually want to say anything about that because Dimitri had really hurt Rose and Lissa hated seeing Rose hurt, so she could accept a little threatening in that case. In response to his question she just smiled. The smile faded as she sat down next to Christian, reaching out she took his hand as she thought about her response. “She’s hurting.” Lissa told him as she looked at their hands intertwined together. “And slamming the door would have woken up Rose, and she needs to sleep, she really needs to get some rest.” Lissa hated seeing Rose like this, she hated feeling like there was nothing she could do for her. Lissa felt like so much was wrong here. She’d come from right after restoring Dimitri and she just… she hated that he was hurting Rose, especially when she felt such a responsibility of Dimitri too. She couldn’t believe he’d move on to anyone else. ~~~ Christian didn’t need a bond with Lissa to tell how much all of this was hurting her too and that...that was what really bothered him. That Dimitri had done something that had ended up hurting Lissa like this - even indirectly. That was where his threat had really come from. “Good thing I fought the temptation to slam it in his face then. God this is a mess. I just want to know what the hell he was thinking,” he told her, keeping his voice quiet. It was hard for him sometimes since he was from further in the timeline than Lissa and Rose and Dimitri. He knew that Dimitri came around back home and got back with Rose and he’d been hoping that would happen here but it looked like he was wrong about that. He looked down at their hands and smiled before looking over at Lissa. “I know I probably don’t need to tell you this but - Rose can stay as long as she wants. I don’t mind. And if you two decide you want to look into the three of us getting a two bedroom apartment we can. I don’t mind that either. I’d say we could just trade apartments and Dimitri move in here and we move over there but...Rose might not want to stay there.” And he couldn’t blame her. He wouldn’t want to stay in the apartment if he was in her position. *** "They aren't together?" Lissa said shrugging. "And he has a the right to do what he wants to do, I just don't get it. I see the way he looks at her… I don't get why they can't just figure it out." Lissa knew the answer to that though, Rose didn't do anything the easy way and if possible she probably would find a way that wasn't a walk in the park, which was exactly what this was. She just… She just wanted them both to be happy. "Maybe they'll find their way…" She hoped they would. Lissa hated that Dimitri hurt Rose, and she hated that she felt like she'd worked really hard to save Dimitri, they'd worked hard, and she'd do it again but she hated that he was hurting Rose. "That's an option, we can talk about after Rose gets some sleep. She deserves to rest and make up her mind afterwards." Lissa said with a small smile as she looked towards the living room where Rose was sleeping. "Thank you." She said softly knowing that he'd know what she was thanking him for, it was for everything. ~~~ “I know they aren’t,” Christian said, hesitating for a second before continuing. This wasn’t a major thing from their future and he trusted Lissa not to say anything about it to anyone. And maybe it would help him some - not keeping everything he knew to himself. “But for me back home...they are. They figured it out and he quit being an idiot,” Maybe Rose and Dimitri hadn’t been back together for very long but he’d adjusted to it pretty quickly once they had been. “I don’t know Lissa. I was hoping they would, I tried to talk to Rose last month and keep her from completely burning her bridges with Dimitri but now...I kind of wish I hadn’t tried.” He hadn’t told Lissa about his attempts with Rose before now. It had just seemed like something he could keep to himself without getting in trouble. “Maybe we can talk about it over dinner. Which reminds me I should go make some more food so that I’m sure we’ve got enough for all three of us,” he told her, following her gaze. He looked back at Lissa and gave her a quick smile. “You’re welcome. You know I’d do just about anything for you. And as much as I like giving her shit - I do consider Rose a friend. And I don’t want to see her hurting either. If we can help I want to.” And he figured Lissa would feel better with Rose here and that was what really mattered to him in all this - Lissa and how she was. *** "They might find their way back to each other." Lissa said softly shrugging. She hoped that they would. "I think you were right to tell her not to burn the bridge, even if she is hurting right now and he's…. he's being a jerk." Lissa didn't like thinking about Dimitri like that, but right now she couldn't help it. "They seem to always find a way back to each other. It just seemed like something that always happened. No matter what they found a way back to each other or fought for each other. Lissa smiled softly. "With Rose, we'll need a mountain." She giggled just a little bit. Rose could eat so much, it always amused Lissa. "I know…" She said to all of the above, she knew that he would do whatever for her, and she knew that he did consider Rose tone a friend which she was really grateful for that. It had taken time for them to figure out a friendship and Lissa had hated being stuck in the middle sometimes, but she was glad that now they were on good footing. ~~~ “They might and when I tried to get her not to - it was primarily to make it easier for them sharing the place. In the hopes they would,” Christian admitted, smiling a little when he heard that giggle. He didn’t hear that sound anywhere near as much as he’d have liked. “Even more reason why I need to go start cooking,” he said, pretending to be disgruntled about it but he figured his smile ruined any chance of anyone believing he felt that way. Least of all Lissa. “Anything particular you think I should fix? Some comfort food she likes or something?” *** Lissa nodded as she thought more about how maybe Dimitri and Rose could figure things out again. She did however make a mental not to actively work on not thinking about and to block those thoughts from Rose because she knew how Rose would feel about that… And she didn’t want to upset her anymore than she was already upset. That wouldn’t be fair. “As long as it’s not too healthy or foie gras, I think we are good.” She said with a small roll of her eyes, but it was a lovingly roll of her eyes. “Or anything else that snobs would eat. Basic food, pizza, you said she liked your meatloaf… Anything harty. You’re the chef, not me.” Lissa did love that he could cook. ~~~ Christian smiled at her and leaned over to steal a quick kiss. “Me make something too healthy? That’s how you’ll know I’m sick,” he teased, trying to cheer her up. He was already thinking through what he had in the kitchen that he could cook as Lissa started making suggestions. He’d already been planning on going to the grocery store tomorrow so that wouldn’t be a big deal. “You gonna be okay with meat loaf?” he asked her. He wanted to make something that they’d all enjoy. *** Laughing softly she just rolled her eyes at his comment, it did cheer her up a little bit, although so much of her attention and emotions were still wrapped up in what had happened with Rose. “Of course that’s fine.” Lissa would have been fine with fried Twinkies at that moment if she thought they’d cheer Rose up, of course she wouldn’t have actually eaten much, or really any but it wasn’t about what she wanted, it was about what Rose needed and that was something she thought Rose would like. |
