When: 2 July. late late
Where: SHIELD HQ
What: Agent Hill is a (wo)man with a plan
Rating: PG / tbd
SHIELD headquarters late at night felt to Agent Hill like stepping out of time, though she'd walked these halls before, step for step, minute for minute, as a matter of routine, each time noting that the two am quiet was incongruous with an organization that never slept. Spaces made to contain great bursts of activity during the day seemed uncomfortably large in the wee hours, great maws yawning for occupation; some of their humans had succumbed to that compulsive nightly need, and those who remained drew away into more intimate rooms, coalescing like so many beads of mercury, still busy, still hard at work, but hidden. Some undisciplined part of her imagination thought of them huddled around their computer screens, afraid of the shadows spilling past the mouth of the cave, afraid of that blue bugbear in the basement. She shrugged this thought physically away. Maria Hill didn't like metaphors much - one of the greater cosmic ironies, as she may as well have been the walking anti-metaphor of her father. This mission, for example. Oh, he'd have hated that. Stick your neck out and it'll get chopped off, rugrat he'd say, as if a thought had ever entered his head ambitious enough to have the whole thing confiscated. She'd spent most of her life sticking her neck out as far as it would go to spite him, and though her latest venture was probably no less shallow in motive, she was reaching that period of familial resignation in her life wherein she hoped it was. "Don't shoot." She didn't look at the foyer guard, the lone vestige of a security detail making its rounds, but they were the only two people in the room. For a moment, anyway. Wouldn't do to have an apparating wizard shot on sight. |
