I had a smashing time playing at Brandy's Piano last night - fine, really fine. I was a little puzzled, I'll admit, by the reception I had from the management, who I'd been given to understand were anticipating my arrival on what might fairly be called tenterhooks, but of course the owners of such establishments do make their name by being sometimes a little rough.
In any case, once I was finally stationed behind the piano, the evening really zipped off. I was sorry to note that many of the Drones' favourites appear to have fallen out of favour, but such is the passage of time; and I learned quite a few rousing new numbers from the chap who kept wobbling up to the bench and humming a few bars perhaps a bit too directly in my ear. I look forward to building up my new standard repertoire. Any suggestions from the modern crowd? Something to get people really carrying on and singing along?
Oh, and to the gent who kept requesting Finnegan's Wake and then throwing crisps at me when I started playing it: I don't think you fully appreciate the concentration necessary to pull an entire room full of rather sloppy people through five verses of decidedly complex lyrics.
