I find uninterrupted space promotes uninhibited thought; a discovery made possible only by being forcibly removed from a series of flats I filled over the years with every reference, touchstone, memento, souvenir and trophy I ever laid my hands on, as though physical reminders were the concrete counterparts of their more perfect twins in my (much better organized, much larger) mental space. It was a system of crutches, and I became perhaps too grounded and too comfortable, learning to dodge (muscle memory) and to ignore visually (the atrophy of familiarity) the everyday objects that never altered unless someone fiddled with them, in which case, of course, everything was put completely out of whack. A silly system propped up by sentiment and perhaps a little pride that became more often than not a burden and a distraction.
Now, with all this newly empty space in my living room flowing nicely out into the empty space outside my window, I'm a changed man. Quite liberated. What more does a man need than a pile of cushions, a blanket, a disconnected smoke detector and an expanse to think in? Good riddance, I say, to sofas.
I can't imagine having two.
