Not the only time he tried that one, obviously.

Temporary physical alterations to assume the identity of an existing bounty hunter, Rako Hardeen. I guess that was more plausible than inventing a new one the others never heard of. But they felt the need to stage Obi-Wan's "murder" by Hardeen to boost his reputation.

It didn't.

They deliberately set it up for me to witness. Because my real grief would "sell" Obi-Wan's death. He had a funeral.

And then they didn't want me to hunt down and bring "Hardeen" to justice— because of course that would interfere with the plan, and yet they continued to keep it from me.

I know. But I wasn't a very good Jedi, was I?

And Palpatine used that. The Council wouldn't let me go after Obi-Wan's killer and the people plotting to kill him, but he "understood" and was confident I was right for the job.

No, you weren't a good Jedi. From what I've heard from people who knew you before, you were an amazing one.

That doesn't mean you were flawless. Or blameless either. Ultimately, you chose your own actions, but Palpatine spent a good deal of time manipulating you and my son for his own purposes.

He was extremely skilled at that on a galactic scale. And on that occasion, he almost succeeded in getting me to turn sooner than I did.

Yes, he was. He turned an entire galaxy away from democracy, and destroyed the Jedi — and everyone applauded him.
