I bought a package of those round glass lights from the store, but I can’t figure out how to make them work. How is it that you make them light up? I thought they would be nice to have on the porch at night.

Thank you again for the help the other day. Despite the circumstances, it was very nice to meet you both, and your friends Bee bee and Chewy. Would you be interested in visiting me at the ranch sometime? With the house so empty, it gets oddly lonely.

It's a process. It's not very simple but you will eventually get there. Thankfully, you are not alone in having been in this situation. There wasn't much of modern technology in my world exactly, but I watched a great deal change in my lifetime. Even then the change from there to this world was jarring.

But people will help, no question is stupid or silly.

I’ve met a lot of helpful people. It makes me remember how lucky I am for each new encounter.

What was your world like?

Well. Rather chaotic, honestly.

I lived in a place called Ravka. When I landed here, I learned that it was influenced by Russia. We didn't have any things running on electricity but the elements of the world. And some of them were controlled by a group of humans with powers known as Grisha. We were grouped in a category of three but ultimately, we can either control forces of the earth, or elements, or even bodies.

That’s a very interesting story. I haven’t heard of this place or the people. I don’t really know much about Russia either. It always seemed so far away to worry about.

You can control things?

In my time, there was a bit of turmoil. We had a sociopath hell-bent on ruling over the land and he had attempted to manipulate the king and queen to do so. He was defeated eventually by my best friend and a whole army of Grisha though.

I can, but not much. I fall under the group known as Corporalki. We control the human body, but everyone is different. Some who are trained to be soldiers can stop a person in their tracks with their powers, can slow down the heart to render someone unconscious if they have to. My powers were entirely superficial. I can only change the outer appearance of a person.

Things have been mostly peaceful since the war ended, mostly people coming out west to be free and start new lives. But there was an incident in a town nearby, a massacre. The only person I know who was there doesn’t want to talk about it. He hasn’t seemed the same since.

Oh. That’s all very... different from anything I’ve heard of. Except. Well, I’ve had a problem recently. Where sometimes my body doesn’t work the way that I... do you think it might be something like that?

I'm so sorry about that.

I'm not entirely sure. These kind of things were usually something a group of veteran Grisha would test out on younger children to find out if they had the power and then would bring them into a camp of sorts to train them for the King's army.

But I'm not surprised you haven't heard of it. Some worlds have magic, some worlds don't. Some are able to travel to space and even live there. We all come from vastly different universes.

It's fine. It had little to do with me. But he left, after, and now when he returns he won't know where to find me.

They'd take the children away? That's awful. Children at least deserve to grow up with their families.

I don't think anything was so special about my world. Everyone seems to come from such interesting places, except me.

Most of us were in the orphanage anyway.

That cannot be possible. I'm sure there was something interesting about your place.

What happened to your parents?

It was very normal. But I suppose everyone believes their own existence to be. Everything here though seems so beyond anything I could have imagined.

I’m sorry. I guess I never quite appreciated how lucky I was.

Do you miss your home?
