If it makes you feel better, that's mostly just cause it's dramatic and current genre logic is that stable relationships are boring.

But who knows here! You might have a writer that's super into that mature emotionally supportive relationship kink, all that good fluff.

I wonder how compatible/incompatible some magics are. Is it how much power the magic has or the compatibility of its effects on the other magic that determines if this works?

Based on my experience of travelling to different worlds, trying other styles of magic-- I think technique can vary but the energy itself is fairly universal, which helps with compatibility.
