My "ears" appear to be compromised. Diagnostics are showing there is no problem, but I cannot hear anything. Not internal body sounds, nor static which my implants sometimes pick up on.

Is there someone willing to look at my implants?

[...] Yes, I suspect the same thing. The man he put in charge of rebuilding me had a switch that could shut everything down. And he was certainly focused on returning me to usefulness as quickly as possible rather than my comfort or any preferences I might've had. Your father and the Emperor seem to have much in common. Why did he even consider you his "children"? As another form of control?

I lived every day in unspeakable pain. He was not kind with the "upgrades" made to me, despite their usefulness.

Yes, I believe he thought that it would join us. Much like the Avengers are more than a team, they're a found family. People fight harder for the things they have found for themselves. He also taught us to abandon the weak.

I know what that's like, though it was different for me since, paradoxically, I could draw on that pain through the Force and it made me more powerful. But if I ever thought it was too much, that meant I was weak.

Did he never fear you would unite against him? Or did his manipulations ensure that would never occur?

The pain only made me angrier, and I used that to torture my victims. There was no special power, except my own fortitude. If I let on that it hurt, it meant I was weak.

He pitted us against one another often enough that we were constantly in fear of what he might do to us if we lost. Every time I lost, I lost a piece of myself. He made Gamora leave me on a mission when I was caught in a trap. I thought there was no way she'd leave me behind. She never had before. I had to cut off my own arm to escape.

Obviously using painkillers was out of the question; he would never provide them, and you would be treated to even greater pain should he ever realize you were not feeling so much of it.

Which was the greater loss— the sacrifice of your arm, or the belief that your sister would never abandon you? I suspect I know the answer.

Painkillers never worked anyway.

I replaced my arm, but after that I spent my time trying to one-up and then trying to kill my sister. I had grown to believe that she cared for me the way I cared for her, as a sister.

That's an understandable response to betrayal. If I remember right, this place has given her to you and then taken her back more than once?

Yes, but the Gamora that I knew and had gone through everything with is dead now. Our father murdered her to get the Soul Stone.

I don't know what a Soul Stone is, but I don't think knowing that would really change the meaning of what you said.

The way you phrased that-- is another Gamora alive? Some sort of [...] backup?

There were Infinity Stones in my world. Reality, Power, Space, Mind, Time, and Soul. Each one controls a various function of the universe. My father from was a planet called Titan. They had too many beings and not enough resources. He tried to warn them, but they called him mad. The planet was ultimate destroyed in war and poverty. In the aftermath, Thanos went from planet to planet with his creatures, destroying half of their people and leaving the rest for the resources. He thought he was saving them.

With all those stones together in a gauntlet, you can control all of reality with the snap of your fingers. He gained all the stones. He snapped his family and destroyed half of the universe's sentient beings. Then he destroyed the stones so it could not be undone.

Ant-Man came up with the idea of a Time Heist. The quantum realm allowed us to travel through time to various points in our own histories where we had run into the stones. We would take them out of time, come back to 2023, use the stones to return the disappeared, then return them to their point in the timeline. Unfortunately, there were two Nebulas in one time period. My neural network linked to hers and Thanos could see my memories. He used past me to infiltrate the Avengers in 2023 to bring him forward in time. This included my sister, Gamora, from the period of time right before she defected.

He was exactly the sort of being who should never have had that power. Did he truly believe he was doing the right thing? Or just enjoy wielding that level of control over the entire universe?

I'm not sure I understand how this "Time Heist" worked but I can relate to how unsettling it would be to connect with your own past mind. I can only imagine having your father be able to access that himself.

So this Gamora of the past lives on while the Gamora you had bonded with was sacrificed by your father.

He had his grand plan, and he believed in it entirely. He was not without hubris though. He believed he was the only one who could see the problem and would have the will to do what he thought needed to be done.

Countless beings in the universe, but only Thanos could see and only Thanos would be willing to do the thing only Thanos could think of to solve it? Of all the things he could do with the ability to control reality, eliminating half of all sentient life was his "solution." I'm sure he didn't take well to suggestions or criticism of this idea.
