I should do a unit on Dadaism this year. People give so much attention to Cubism and none to this beautiful weirdness. Of course Cubism is definitely significant, but I think there's been something of a resurgence of the principles of Dadaism lately that's really interesting.

Case in point.

In the meantime... Madeira, Portugal or Koh Tao, Thailand?

I'm personally fond of the fish-chicken smoking a cigarette. I know we've only just met, but it feels deep. Or meaningless. It's hard to say.

It's Dada, there's no reason it can't be both.

I guess so. We would not want to limit it.

Rules are an illusion.

You sound like Ronan.

We might be talking about different rules.

It's possible, but he always says that about rules. I like that art can be anything. I want to try some different things other than painting.

In the real world they're only an illusion as long as you don't annoy someone with power. I don't see any reason to bring that into art. If it speaks to someone, it's art.

Probably. He's an artist of a kind. Just not with painting and stuff.

I agree with you on Dadaism seeming to resurface as of late. There is a lot more challenging the status quo and with that, I think the Dada mocking of norms fits in well. There's no shortage of mocking, so the inspiration is there.

Too many people don't really look at the messages underlying things, or even outright deny that it's there. I'm never really sure whether it's a symptom of hearing culture elevating the use of words over any other form of communication or something else. Obviously there are people who study this sort of thing, but it seems like an underrated field.

I'd guess a mixture of things myself. I like what you said, about it being a symptom of hearing culture, but I also feel like we've been trained to only see one thing and anything else is wrong. It reminds me somewhat of being in high school English and asked to write an interpretation on a poem, what the author is trying to say. Then, a teacher would mark you wrong if it wasn't the one they were looking for. People are going to see something different in art, literature, but if they're taught there's only one right interpretation, then they're going to stop looking and wait for someone to tell them what it is.

Which is just a theory on my part. Dadaism is not one of my stronger areas.

No, I'm more into Impressionism and the Fauvists' use of colour, really, but I dabble in a lot of styles and mediums.

It's funny, I wouldn't wish my childhood on anyone, but it definitely taught me a lot about communication and meaning and nuance. Very, very useful if you're going to be any kind of spy and have to learn how to sell a consistent lie in every movement.

I understand that completely. There's too many to commit to just one.

Kind of like you're glad you get those lessons but going back, doing it over? Hell no, just keep moving forward? The world could probably use a little more communication, meaning, and nuance these days overall. Probably stop a few misunderstandings before they start.

Something like that. It's a little unfair how it seems like you can either have a nice, easy life or develop actual character though. Not that most of the first kind ever notice.

Yeah, I kinda noticed that too. It's like the Powers That Be assume that a nice, easy life won't build character. Only way it can be done is the hard way around.

The Powers That Be are a bit of an ass sometimes.

Sometimes. Sometimes they're all right. I guess it's if you're lucky enough to catch them in a good mood.
