Greetings everyone. It would be a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Most recently in my life, most people call me Breq, but I am also Justice of Toren. Please forgive the immediate discussion of business; however, I have some issues that need to be addressed.

Athoek Station, part of it, has arrived with me, and Station - its AI - is in need of more assistance than I can provide. The Botanical Gardens, recently repaired, will need regular work to maintain it. Given enough time, I can take care of the rest of Station. The Undergarden was mostly repaired, and I can fix what remains. However, living things cannot be ignored for so long. Unfortunately, having just arrived, I do not have local currency on a scale to pay anyone yet. I do have more than enough food, we grow our own, as well as tea and other options, pursuant to conversation and your needs.

While I could spend all my hours maintaining Station, and I will spend a good number of them doing just that, I am also interested in gaining paid employment. I have roughly two thousand years experience in the military, five years experience as civilian security, as well as experience in a multitude of jobs from janitorial to sewing to sports. I am fluent in more than sixty languages and learn new ones easily. If you have means and need for any of my skills or ones I could learn, I am interested in speaking with you.

Transporting myself is easy, I've got a bike. The robots will take a little more doing, but I might be able to borrow a car from a friend. But I can come over and look, myself, and then program them and bring them over later. And in the meantime I can bring Swan. She's a Pokemon, but she's actually made of computer code, so she's kind of like an AI, and would be totally safe for your AI to connect with if they wanted to. No Galra tech there, for sure.

That's amazing! And makes total sense. And I suppose you never know what this place will throw at you. People did go into space once, I've been told. I wasn't here for that though.

We are outside of town, so it will be something of a ride to get here. But you and Swan are welcome to come over. Station and Swan can get to know each other and decide for themselves what they would like to do. There are different levels at which one can be connected.

Many people live their whole lives on space stations. And while there are usually some things stations will rely on outside sources to provide, they are meant to be self-sufficient, generally. We were already used to more isolation than usual before coming here, and that seems to have been good practice. If we go into space and Station is with us, it will be able to help a great deal.

That's okay! I like the exercise. Of course, if you really need me there quickly, I can get a ride or even borrow one of my boyfriend's suits. Swan has never connected to an AI before, but she likes computer networks, and she might want to try it. We'll see what they think.

That makes sense, of course. I haven't actually been to a space station, per se, not one built by humans, at least. I was on a spaceship, though, that went to Kerberos, and then got kidnapped by the Galra and ended up very deep in space. There were space stations, and bases, there, but all of them were different, built by different species. I'm excited to see what Station is like.

Station is stable. I am used to it taking much longer for people to get to Station. Where we were, if a ship was not docked, or if someone wanted to come from the planet, it would take most of a day at least. Station does have access to all the computer data on Station. We look forward to meeting her.

How many species have you interacted with? Humans have expanded well beyond Earth, but there have been few other species out in the universe, in that universe. But you can see how Radchaai build space stations. Station is wonderful and very good at what it does.

That makes sense, traveling between planets is a lot farther than across a city. May not be all the way across the city depending on where you are in relation to me. Do you have an address?

Oh - hm. I've interacted with a lot of different species, but I'm not sure of the exact number. The rebels were a real mixed-species group, all of them united against the Galra, who'd built an empire based on stealing the energy from the planets they controlled. And every species had their own technology. I haven't met any Radchaai, though, that's for sure.

And collisions in space can end poorly. To my knowledge, no. But we are off [Road] at mile marker [#].

Could you estimate an order of magnitude? Empires can be destroyed. Radchaai are humans, just one civilization of it. It means civilized.

Indeed, they certainly can. Is that what happened with Station? Did you want me to head over now?

Certainly at least 20 species? Maybe more like 50, or 100? I don't usually ask for species if it isn't offered, and it wasn't always. It wasn't really a high priority. Mostly people were introduced by their names, and then skills or leadership positions in the rebel organization.

Are the Radchaai humans who have built a civilization in space, then?

Fortunately no, though a collision did happen near it. Years of neglect and a lack of sensors led to damage which has started to be fixed but is not complete. You would be welcome now. But you may come when fits into your schedule.

At such high numbers, with that much mingling, with a common oppressor, that can make sense. It is different from the universe I am from.

Many humans have colonized different planets and systems. It has been thousands of years, more, since humans first went into space. The Radchaai have expanded their empire to be the largest human civilization known to be in space. It affects nearly every human, whether they are Radchaai or not.

I can come over now, and then we'll figure the rest out going forward. I have a few other important projects going, including a prosthetic arm.

The Galra have affected a large number of species. On any given planet, it might be mainly just one species working together. But multiple species got grouped together in their work camps, or laboratories, or arenas. And a lot of the rebel work has involved building networks between planets.

Human space travel is definitely less advanced in the time I'm from, although more advanced than this planet. I've been farther into space than most. I definitely would have noticed if there were multiple planets and systems colonized by humans out there, but it might happen at some point.

I take it you are working on something more advanced that this time and place are capable of. Medical technology here is limited.

That level of cooperation can be difficult but is impressive. The Galra do not pit different species and groups against each other? So that there is economic advantage to hold people apart?

Space travel, terraforming, all take time. Humanity did not spread across the stars overnight.

My tech is more advanced, yeah, but not as advanced as some species I've seen. And probably not as advanced as yours, from the sound of it.

[...] Different species are pitted against each other in the arena. And there may be some places where that happens. There are definitely places where some are sympathetic to the Galra and turn against their own species because they're benefiting from it somehow. But the vast majority, I think, are just separated by the space between their planets.

Terraforming is such a fascinating concept. I have a lot of ideas about it. But I've never gotten to try any of them.

Most people with access to adequate medical care do not need prosthetics. I am regrowing a leg myself. When it finishes I will not need my prosthetic. I wish I could offer such treatment to others, but Medic is not here.

There are many means to subject people. If the Galra have not depended on that, then your efforts to network will be that much easier.

It is a slow, difficult process that requires a vast commitment of resources. However, I have seen many successfully terraformed planets. We may not be able to try them here, but they are worth having. What are some of your ideas?

Regrowing a leg! Oh man, I wish we had that technology. I have two friends that are missing arms now.

No, they mainly depend on fear of violence, I think. Which is pretty effective, in itself, and I've met plenty who were scared to join up with us. Once Voltron showed up, a lot of people felt braver.

It seems like using as much as possible from what is already on the planet would be ideal. Though not to the point of depleting the planet's resources. And then finding ways to adapt different types of plants to be able to grow in whatever substrate can be made. Water is usually considered the main limiting factor.

It takes a couple months and can be bothersome. However, I do appreciate that I will have my leg back. I am sorry that I cannot help them grow arms back. Even with Station's help, I do not have the implants to do so safely. It is not as simple as using a first aid corrective.

It can be incredibly effective. Few people will speak their mind if it means their death. How did Voltron help?

That would make it cheaper and less intensive of a process to provide what is needed. Many places build weather control systems to affect surface conditions. Once there is enough water present, it greatly helps with reusing it. But water is something terraforming needs to be amenable to humans.

It makes total sense that something like that would be really complicated. But - wow. Can your tech regrow other body parts? Organs?

Mainly, Voltron was the first to win some real battles against the Galra. It's the most powerful weapon in the world, and thankfully it's in the hands of really good people. And they've given people a lot of hope.

Weather control is definitely another aspect. Definitely a problem on a lot of planets. Temperature management and shelter from wind or dust storms of multiple varieties. When I went to Kerberos I was taking samples to figure out what might be possible there, but I haven't gotten to do it since. I've had other priorities.

If people are suspended or reach medical care in time, yes. A few months ago, my lungs were regrown. However, for most of my life, I usually did not receive such care. It can be intensive with slow recovery times.

Is this robot sentient? It sounds remarkable certainly. The universe is a large place to defend. It is a start. But freedom will take more than Voltron, I should think.

Weather control is a balance. Some weather patterns may be unpleasant for humans but good for planetary health. Making the two align can be challenging. Moons are great places to explore. Even if you need a space habitat, they can offer many resources. Understandable. My priorities have changed upon coming here.

Lungs! That's incredible. They must have gotten to you quickly; you can't go long without lungs.

Voltron is made up of five sentient lions, each of which has a paladin -- basically, their pilot. They have a mental or psychic connection that develops more over time. And then when all the lions join together, they become Voltron. It's really cool. None of us entirely know how it works, but a lot of it is about the bond between the lions and their paladins, and the bonds between the paladins themselves that helps them all join together.

It's definitely something I'd like to look into. Although now I'm not sure if it's something I'll end up doing. Short term, I was focused on the rebellion against the Galra. Long term, my sister and I have talked about going back to the Galaxy Garrison and making it into something different, better. Which might lead to getting to do more research into things like terraforming, but might not. And since I've been here, I've mostly been working on researching the portal, and doing tech, and building prosthetics.

They must have. It was incredibly foolish of them, and they could have died. Once I was in suspension, I did not need to breath. I was not brought out until I had lungs.

The lions were built to bond with their paladins? It raises a lot of questions. I would like to meet them, if it is ever possible.

There is a lot of work to be done here, and you sound like you have more than enough to occupy a single person. But perhaps you can take some small amount of time and devote it to what you want to study. We don't know what will happen someday.

They must have thought you were worth the risk. I'm glad you survived that!

I'm actually not sure how the lions were built. Probably one of the paladins, especially Allura, could tell you more, if you wanted to ask them your questions. But I know the lions weren't built by their current paladins, and they choose which paladins to accept. Unfortunately, none of the lions are here.

I like to have a lot of projects, and I have a lot of energy for them. I'm definitely never bored from lack of things to do. But it does take more time than focusing solely on one thing, and the prosthetic arm for my friend is currently the highest priority. But it's coming along well, much more quickly than the first one we built, because we're not starting from scratch this time. I don't know how much study in that area I can do from here; I'd probably have to go someplace like NASA, and that would involve leaving my team behind. But at some point, maybe! At the very least, I can try to rebuild the Garrison in a way that makes it possible for other science officers to push that research forward.

I too am glad I survived it. But I believe the individual did not understand the danger they were in.

I would like to ask them questions, whoever would have the answers. It is encouraging they choose their paladins, but it does not remove many many questions. It is a shame they are not here. I would enjoy the conversation.

It is rare that time permits anyone to work on one thing and one thing alone. Even one project can grow many parts. I am glad for your friend. The limitations, even temporarily, can be frustrating and, more importantly, have significant consequences. Depending on what happens. Which, here, could be anything.

What information would you need to be able to gather to work on terraforming potential here? It may not be possible. The technology is quite limited. But I have not been here long enough to judge.

Are they okay?

I think they'd definitely be willing to talk to you! I can introduce you at some point. I'm not sure how talkative the lions would be with someone they haven't chosen as a paladin. They didn't talk to me at all. But I also didn't really have much time to try talking to them, either, to be fair.

I'd have to think about exactly what I'd need. If I ever find myself with a lack of things to do, I'll put some thought into it. Doesn't seem likely to happen anytime soon though. Do you have a particular interest in it?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]troopcarrier
2018-07-11 05:52 am UTC (link)
At that time, yes. It's been a couple months since then, so I cannot speak to their current state.

Thank you, that is appreciated. It's very easy to go without talking, and I would guess many people do not take or have the time to talk with them.

The to do list has only gotten longer, despite the help. I have never been involved with terraforming a planet, but I have some familiarity with many planets that have been terraformed. The difficulty and complexity of the processes involved are comparable to other kinds of systems and problems. I find it worth thinking about, but it's had little practical application in my life.
