Breha was injured severely during her Challenge of the Body on Appenza Peak. Her heart and lungs were injured to the point that she had to have them replaced with pulmonodes. They decided not to chance a pregnancy, and she never had them covered. The soft orange light beneath her skin always reminded me of her heart, her love, her warmth.

I don't know enough about the culture you were raised in.

As organ replacements go, it sounds like those were beautiful.

When an heir of Alderaan turns sixteen, they claim the throne on their Day of Demand. To prove yourself worthy, you must commit and complete three challenges: Body, Mind and Heart. I chose to climb Appenza Peak, represent Alderaan in the Apprentice Legislature and undertake charity missions to planets in need.

They were. Most people underwent bacta sessions to grow new skin around them, but not the Queen. She left hers as a reminder of what she'd experienced.

Did you prove yourself worthy in the eyes of Alderaan?

An especially interesting choice for a queen, to not prioritize vanity or the appearance of invulnerability.

I believe that I did for a time. I continued my mercy missions even after, and I became the youngest Senator in the Republic's history. Under my parentage was revealed, I will still a Senator of Alderaan. There is a space station large enough to hold what was left of us. It's really a series of stations now.

Alderaanians believe that strength comes from learning from your mistakes, not hiding them.

Ah yes, and your "mercy missions". You had a rash of ships "stolen" from you, didn't you, and other "unfortunate" circumstances.

Things would've been [...] very different if the signs of mine had been on display.

They weren't always Rebellion-related. A good many times they were just what they were: mercy missions with food and supplies. A lot of people were starving under the Empire.

Some people didn't believe you were a man at all.

Oh, were there legitimate thefts, pirates and the like? Not just cover stories? I knew a pirate before. He seemed to think Obi-Wan was his friend.

I believe that was intentional in the design. Apparently I was a very advanced droid, or so many believed. I had something in common with your foster mother after all.

There were some thefts, yes. The pirate was definitely a cover story.

I'd heard rumors about you, but I figured you were a figure like Grievous. Half droid, half sentient being. I didn't think about it much at the time, given what you did to people, but knowing what I know now... You weren't truly able to interact with the outside world at all.

Not so much like Grievous. He was a dangerous foe, but ultimately pathetic. And even more of his body had been replaced.

But as to the latter... you are correct. I could not.

He did all that on purpose though, didn't he?

That doesn't make the things you did any better, but it does make me feel something for you.

That was the rumor, though I'm not sure of the truth. Allegedly, he wanted to exceed biological limits like limb rotation and endurance, become even better at killing.

I'm assuming your brother told you about my physical state. I convinced myself that I welcomed it. It gave me no choice but to sink further into the Force, the dark side, instead of being concerned about mere physical existence or other beings.

He did, but I'm also not an idiot. I can research things in this world.

I'll be honest with you. I would rather have died.

I wasn't sure if I was one of the things you'd researched.

It would have been better for the galaxy if I had, but the Emperor was unwilling to give up after putting so much effort into shaping me, and I was too full of hate to let go and become one with the Force.

I tried to kill him, when it was complete.

There wasn't much information on you in our world. The Jedi archives were destroyed so everything was word of mouth.

If you had really tried, you would have succeeded.

Yes. Including the archivist. Here, there is an abundance of information available.

If I'd been fully in control of myself, yes, I would have. But my body was newly changed and I hadn't adapted to that yet. I didn't try again since he was quick to put me in my place to show how easily he could kill me. I wasn't ready then to give my life to take his.

Yes. Even with my body a ruin, it was the Force that mattered, and I was [...] superior.

I didn't used to. And I know you never will understand, because you'd never turn as I did. I destroyed everything I once had or could have had, thinking I would save your mother and you unborn. I was left with only the Force. And the Emperor.
