WHO: Jim Kirk and Leonard McCoy
WHEN: Sunday evening
WHERE: A roadside diner somewhere in Iowa
SUMMARY: Greasy food and 21st century annoyances
WARNINGS: None to start. Maybe some swearing?

There was nothing like taking a road trip with your best friend, Jim thought, as he emerged from the dingy bathroom in the back corner of this roadside diner he and Bones had stopped at just across the Iowa border. They were both hungry, and Jim pulled over into the parking lot of the first place he saw that wasn't fast food. "Might as well sit down and enjoy our meal," he had said as they walked in. Once seated, Jim headed off to the bathroom and now was sliding into the side of the booth opposite Bones. "Anything look good?" he asked as he picked up the laminated menu, which was a little sticky, and glanced over it. Nothing looked good, really. Yet everything looked good, at the same time.

"What do you suppose the chef special is?" he asked, poking at one of the menu items that was punctuated with an oversized exclamation point. "No, wait, I'm definitely getting the chocolate chip pancakes. Who cares if it isn't even time for breakfast, right?" Jim grinned across the table at Bones. He had a feeling he knew everything the good doctor was going to say before it opened his mouth to say any of it.

Bones flopped the laminated menu down so that he could look across the table at Jim. They had been in a car together for a long time. Fortunately, he wasn't irritated with Jim so much as he was, by default, grumpy about being stuck in the past. He supposed this had been an interesting idea of Jim's. They had seen a lot of the land on the side of the highway, even though most of it was fields. Was he having fun? Eh. But he liked being with Jim and Jim was having fun, so that was good.

"Well if they're still serving it, then technically it can be eaten whenever." He furrowed his brow at the menu. "My God, do you know how much cholesterol is in some of these dishes?"

Yes, that was pretty much exactly what Jim expected that Bones would say. He couldn't help but laugh anyway. "Ignore the health risk, Bones," he said. "Just pick something that looks good and eat it. Don't think too hard about it." Although he was a little concerned about the cleanliness of the whole place. Grease and calories and cholesterol? Eh, that didn't matter. Contracting some 21st century disease? That might be more of an issue.

"Speaking of health risk, does that cook look like he's washed his hands?" Bones was reading Jim's mind. He motioned to the grubby looking guy they could see through the window into the kitchen. "I mean, people still get the cold in his century." Like Jim, he was a little worried that their immune systems wouldn't be able to cope with being introduced to so many ancient diseases.

Jim glanced over at the counter where the kitchen was open behind. He shrugged, but he made a face at the same time. "I think we can manage fighting a little cold, Bones," Jim said. "Where's your spirit of adventure?"

"If getting a cold is an adventure, then you can count me out." He put down the laminated menu and sat back against the plastic padding on the booth. "What do you think of this century?"

Bones wasn't too thrilled with it. Practicing medicine was practically archaic, though at least he had received some hyposprays as a gift from whatever powers that were.

Jim figured out what he was going to order (and hoped that he wouldn't regret it later) and set his menu aside as well. "Well, I don't hate it," he told Bones. "It's not like I expected to show up here, time travel as it is or whatever, but it's not horrible."

"Could be a worse time period, I guess," Bones said. "At least they've managed to all but eliminate the more deadly diseases." And they didn't have contact with the alien ones yet.

When the waitress came, Bones ordered pancakes, as they seemed like one of the less greasy things on the menu. Once she walked away, he continued: "Seriously though, how are you not worried about the Enterprise? I know we were going to be grounded in Yorktown for a while, but this wasn't exactly how I planned to spend my time off. And what are we going to do about Sulu?"

There wasn't really much to do about him, Bones knew. He just found it incredibly odd that their pilot had apparently been somewhere else before he'd come here and apparently knew a whole lot of people here because of it.

"Oh, I can definitely think of a lot of worse places and times to be than right here, right now," Jim said. He ordered a breakfast burrito with extra cheese and salsa, which he was sure would get him a look of disgust from Bones, but you only live once, right? (Or twice, as Jim's case may be, but that didn't need to come up."

He sat back. "Well, there's your answer," Jim said. "If Sulu has been here or wherever for however long, and when we were back home, he was also there, wouldn't it be logical to suggest that maybe both of us are also back on the Enterprise too?" He shrugged. "If all of that's true, then she's in excellent hands." His hands, as it were.

It got him an eyebrow raise, but that was about it. Bones couldn't judge anyone on eating habits since his weren't great either, but he was more concerned about the cleanliness of the place. Having salmonella poisoning and being stuck in a car sounded like just about the worst thing ever.

"I just mean that I think it's weird that he knows all these people here and had a whole other life somewhere else entirely," he said. "Apparently they started a version of Starfleet, wherever they were."

Jim nodded and sipped on the orange juice their waitress had brought for them. "Yeah, it's really weird," he agreed. "A whole other life. I don't know what to think of it. And as far as I know, this universe isn't anywhere near ready to launch Starfleet. They haven't even made first contact yet."

Bones leaned back against the booth seat, hoping that he wouldn't end up sticking to it. "They've been to space, but they're still hardly much further than the Russians were in the 1960s. They haven't even been to Mars yet. I know that there are other people from the future here too, but I just can't see how it's going to be done," he said. "It's just like my luck with trying to find a tricorder."

That had been zero so far, but he still had to ask the young lady that Stark had recommended.

Jim chuckled and shook his head. "I'm afraid we're just Earthbound then," he said. "Shouldn't be a problem for you though, Bones, huh? You hate flying anyway."

"It makes me nauseated, as you know." Fortunately he hadn't thrown up on Jim or anyone else yet, but he'd come close a few times. "But it's mostly take offs and landings. Once we're up I'm alright."

The waitress brought his coffee and Bones took a sip. He liked it black - no cream or sugar. "We may not be completely Earthbound," he replied, "since some of the people here seem to have powers that go beyond that of a typical human."

Jim laughed. Yeah, he knew all that, but it didn't mean he didn't like getting on Bones's case about it. Unlike his friend, Jim dumped two packets of sugar into his coffee, hesitated, and then added a third before stirring it. "Yeah, well, we're still just regular old humans, aren't we."

"Still just regular humans," Bones confirmed. "Doing the seemingly impossible without magic powers."

At least the portal had given him some hyposprays. Those would be incredibly helpful, even if a tricorder would have been better. But, he was trying to be positive about what he did have rather than negative about what he didn't. For Bones, that was a pretty big step.

"What do you plan to do for a job here?"
