β€œThe trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting. This is the treason of the artist; a refusal to admit the banality of evil and the terrible boredom of pain.”

I think this book is trying to tell me being happy isn't actually bullshit?

I usually read non-fiction but this was short, so.

It's called "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omela" and it's about a festival that goes on only if one kid is kept in a terrible condition. Reminds me of my home, only it was all the kids and everyone was poor? So maybe not really?

I'm not a big reader, but I ended up reading a lot of classic literature when I was in prison.

Huh. That sounds really shitty. And you had to deal with something like that back where you're from?

I'm going to start on the classics, so I can catch up.

It wasn't just one kid. They had a lottery. One boy, one girl would win. When you won, you had the honor of fighting to the death.

Dickens is pretty good. Tolstoy is pretty heavy, but worth looking into.

Jesus Christ. That's awful. I'm sorry if you had to go through that. That's one surefire way to mess a kid up for life.

I'll remember that.

That's what I said, almost exactly. I won one of them. They put me in another.

I have a list. I had a lot of time on my hands.

Damn. One is bad enough, but two? What the hell kind of government just lets people get away with doing that to kids?

Give me the list sometime.

The kind of government you overthrow.

I'm Johanna, by the way.

Will do.

Yeah. That sounds about right.

Faith.

We did, too.

Your name is Faith? Everyone I know has a name that means something and I got stuck with Johanna.

Good.

Yup. Don't think my parents meant anything deep and meaningful when they picked it, but it is. Johanna's a pretty name, though.

You think so? It's Latin, a language no one speaks anymore.

I think so. Just because no one speaks it anymore doesn't mean that it's still not a nice name. Honestly, a lot of the time when I was younger, I wished I had a more normal name.

My mentor in the fight-to-the-death thing was named Blight. It's something that affects trees and makes them die. We lived in an area with lots of trees. I think his parents hated him.

Or maybe his parents hated trees?

Not like they could pick up and leave.
