β€œThe trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting. This is the treason of the artist; a refusal to admit the banality of evil and the terrible boredom of pain.”

I think this book is trying to tell me being happy isn't actually bullshit?

Is it one of those self help books? Those tend to do that a lot.

It's not a self-help book. It's a short story.

Sorry. It sounded like it might be. What book is it from?

I usually read non-fiction but this was short, so.

It's called "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omela" and it's about a festival that goes on only if one kid is kept in a terrible condition. Reminds me of my home, only it was all the kids and everyone was poor? So maybe not really?

I'm not a big reader, but I ended up reading a lot of classic literature when I was in prison.

Huh. That sounds really shitty. And you had to deal with something like that back where you're from?

I'm going to start on the classics, so I can catch up.

It wasn't just one kid. They had a lottery. One boy, one girl would win. When you won, you had the honor of fighting to the death.

Dickens is pretty good. Tolstoy is pretty heavy, but worth looking into.

Jesus Christ. That's awful. I'm sorry if you had to go through that. That's one surefire way to mess a kid up for life.

Sometimes you're just now allowed to be happy. I don't think people choose to not be happy.

That's what I'm focused on. Like when you see a couple together and you're like 'god they're dumb."

Purple ones are superior and I ain't sharing.

Maybe I will. I'll think about it.

You can't go anywhere when you're in pain. You're stuck there, in the pain. It gets boring.
