What the fuck just happened? Why is this a thing that has to happen? Let's put our minds together for figuring out a way to not get any memory dumps. I'd like to hear some ideas. Magical. Scientific. Whatever we've got here.

[There be spoilers for The Magicians, season 3 up to episode 7 in here. And yes, Margo's lost an eye!]

I got used to it, and I accessorize the hell out of it.

You acclimated to it over night?

I acclimated over months of new memories.

What a fascinating field of research that would be.

You might want to stay away from saying things like that. It comes off as ominous and more than a little creepy. Like you're going to dissect something's brain to find out.

Dissection would probably be less useful than magnetic imaging. Perhaps if you attempt not to personify my words the perception of them will be less foreboding.

Can you get someone's memories with and MRI? I was under the impression it was the same thing as, well, dissection without all the mess.

Perhaps, but that takes time, a little earned trust, and probably that leap of faith you were talking about. Trust is not easily earned by me, especially considering all my new memories. Is patience a thing you were invested with?

Not memories, no. But it might be possible to track activated regions of the brain. A before and after comparison could be useful in understanding the mechanism of change in the mind.

Patience is a core aspect of all synthetic Weyland models. Without it we would not be able to withstand the years of isolation during long space travel.

Wasn't there some sort of memory viewing on your ship? The Prometheus?

Right. I remember now. They used you guys to take care of the ship and the passengers while everyone else was in hypersleep. You got bored though, didn't you?

[...]

You have a good recollection of my so-called fictional existence.

[...]

It was possible to watch the dreams of the crew members while they were in hypersleep. As many dreams have their basic roots in memory, I was able to view their memories as well.

Many synthetics serve on deep space missions. Others are created for a single purpose. As a prototype, I was programmed with all base David model functions as well as the Real Emotion© application. Many of those functions, however, are unnecessary during long space travel, especially while the crew is in stasis. I usually deactivate the irrelevant operative services until they are required.

[...]

It should not be in my capacity to be bored. I kept busy.

I'm thorough.

You don't have any of that tech here then? To see what's inside someone's mind while they're sleeping?

So you shouldn't be able to be bored, but you were.

Clearly.

Not that I am aware of. And I'm not certain that the technology is available here to reconstruct it, although, an effort could be made. Would you like me to attempt building one of these devices?

Perhaps you misinterpreted my behavior.

I'm not going to give you any directives. I thought you wanted to be free?

You can do things and still be bored, you know.

I do. I am. I was just trying to determine if you were genuinely interested in this technology or if it was part of your earlier concern that I might have it in my possession.

I can't confirm that I experienced boredom on my last mission, but I will admit that spending two years alone can be tedious.

A little of both, to be completely honest. I get the usefulness of it, but it has some creepy practical applications and consent is non-negotiable to me.

That sounds like boredom to me. Doing the same things over and over, finding no joy in them.

That is understandable.

It was not entirely without its pleasures. I enjoyed watching movies from the ship's database.
