I found them quite adept at doing that which they were programmed to do.

Then I suppose that, by definition, they fulfilled their function. That is the benefit of a programmable species, is it not? They need only be adept and satisfy their creator's purpose. Robots do not feel the need to exceed expectations.

Now that is not always true. It depends on if their creator has given them the ability to adapt as they need to in order to grow and exceed in ways their creator never imagined possible.

Isn't it?

You suggest the possibility that an artificial life form is capable of superseding its creator's original coding. That would be a considerable advancement in the field of robotics. I don't know if the word 'grow' is appropriate, but it is poetic. Do you like poetry, Charles?

I've seen it happen myself. Unfortunately Vision is no longer present or you would be able to see such a fete.

And yes, I am rather fond of poetry.

What an exhilarating experience that would have been. I would envy you, but that is not an emotion I am familiar with. I can only hope that I'm still here when the opportunity to see such an advancement presents itself again.

What are your thoughts on Shelley?

He's been here twice so there is always a possibility he will return again.

Is there a specific poem that you like to discuss?

I am quite fond of 'Ozymandias'. Perhaps it is counter intuitive to my functioning to admit, but that poem speaks to me on a level that I would associate with the perception of experienced feeling. Although I know that not to be the case.

Why do you perceive that to not be the case?

Although I am programmed with emotions I am not capable of feeling them myself.

So I could imitate humans and blend in effortlessly with the workforce.

Has such a feature been beneficial or merely made those you work with more wary of you?

A profound query, Charles. I would say that the result is mixed. As a prototype model, I lack many of the modifications made on the line as a result of my interactions with crew members. It has been suggested that I am too human. And that does cause some unease with certain colleagues. On the other hand, experience has taught me that most people would prefer a more human interaction during times of stress, grief, and situations involving heightened emotion. I have an excellent bedside manner, if I do say so myself. This translates better in person, I can assure you.

I do not know. I have never existed without a primary directive from my creator. I am open to suggestions. You seem to be a logically composed member of your species. Would you like me to take directives from you?

No, I think I would rather you decide for yourself what your directives should be.

As you wish. But I cannot predict a high outcome of success. I don't know what purpose I can serve on a cruise ship and my presence has already begun to unsettle many of the other residents.

We can always reevaluate in a few weeks if progress is not being made. And unfortunately you can do little to change their minds anytime soon.

I appreciate your advice. I would enjoy consulting with you on this and other matters during the course of my stay here. You are a remarkably learned and clear-sighted example of your species. And I'm glad that my presence has not deterred you from conversation with me.

Seeing as how my general needs are very few and considering the semantics of the conversation, I will do my best to reach out when I want to.
