Sex isn't something you do to people and meaningless sex isn't better or worse than it is in a relationship. The important part is people making their own choices with all the information. I'd say they probably had a different attitude in the thirties but honestly it hasn't changed that much. In some ways the sexual revolution and "free love" probably just made things worse.
