WHO: Tara and Willow
WHEN: after the private cake party for Tara's birthday
WHERE: the streets of Tumbleweed
WHAT: The two talk about Sumerian rituals and their connection to each other.
WARNINGS: Low
STATUS: thread, incomplete

______________

After the cake, Tara felt a little older. It was strange how one tradition could make you feel like you've grown a whole year. Especially since she was already telling people she was 22. She worried about Buffy, being older and seeing so much. She could imagine what kind of hells she had to be through. Or maybe she had a normal life. Tara made a note to talk to Buffy at some point, catch up on what happened after the Hellmouth collapsed.

Tara was feeling feisty and asked Willow to go for a walk with her. Look out everyone, a walk. Part of her just enjoyed Willow's company and the other part wanted Willow to see that she loved Tara, maybe even a little bit.

They left Buffy's house and went into the streets, staying on the sidewalks. The streetlights were blinking on and Tara felt that it was a magical night. The Sumerian ritual they spoke of would be perfect for tonight. It might have to wait, but something special was bound to happen. She could feel it.

Tara turned to Willow. "Do you plan on continuing college now that you're here?"

"Wonder Woman?" Willow couldn't help the disbelief and confusion that colored her tone of voice in response to Tara's statement. Wasn't that the name of some comic book character Xander liked? "I'd just assumed the historical Amazon's and the isles surrounding the Greek territories of mythos was interplaying here, and then there's all those jokes about the Amazon's and the isle of Lesbos, but we all know history doesn't completely align there for supporting documentation from archaeological records and-" Willow stopped herself, realizing the point she was likely trying to make was lost in the long-winded explanation she was beginning to delve into.

"Like, Xander's Wonder Woman?" Because if Tara was really one of the Scoobie's she'd know what Willow was talking about here undoubtedly. It wasn't like Xander's geeky love of comics was particularly hidden. "That's really great that she's been so nice to you and encouraged you to take classes again. If it's something you want to do I completely support this! Ooo! That means we could even be study buddies. Who doesn't love a good ole' study group pow-wow?" Willow couldn't help an assured smile and nod as if to accent her point about it all.

Yet, when it was all said, and done, and everything was out Tara seemed.....

Well....

Tara was....

Holding her hand.

How should she.... How did she.... There was a flash of uncertainty that crossed features, and a brief stiffness that vanished almost as quickly as it had come on. Honestly, the redhead hadn’t expected the other woman to reach out like that, to be so forward in a sense. Was it okay for them to hold hands? Well… It wasn’t like she hadn’t held hands with Buffy before. Friends did that sort of thing, and her and Tara had been all sorts of friendly, and….

This didn’t…..

It took another second for Willow’s posture to completely relax, and a bright smile to emerge once more before fingers cautiously ventured to wrap around Tara’s in order to hold the other woman’s hand.

"Talking too. Talking's important." It felt dumb to say again, but… Everyone had kept telling her to make sure that she communicated that she wanted to get to know Tara, and….. Well… She did want to. The notion - on a level she was still struggling to fully understand - made her giddy in some ways, and….

“I got the components for the ritual too!” A glance was ventured towards Tara for a moment before Willow shifted, turning to look down the street but still a bit hesitantly holding onto the other woman’s hand. Almost like she was testing it out in some ways, trying to find her own footing in all of this. “It ends up being a locket that you have to wear. I think I got one that will look really nice on you, and it shouldn’t stir up any allergies, but if it does we can totally re do the ritual with another locket that I will totally find and get because people deserve to….” There was a hitch in her sentence where Willow stopped, as if her brain had flipped a switch and completely derailed what she was going to say.

“Because you deserve something nice on your birthday.”

"I think she might be Xander's Wonder Woman. She didn't say but other people have mentioned her. You gotta pay careful attention to the people around here. There's secret celebrities everywhere."

Tara noticed Willow tense up for a moment when she took her hand and nearly let go-- but Willow hung on. So Tara did too. Friends hold hands. This was okay.

"We could be study buddies! Study math, study Hittites, Mesopotamians, and the Sumerians." She grinned.

When Willow stumbled over her words to finally say it was a locket and that it was a birthday present, Tara blushed. "T-thank you. My birthday's never been a big deal before."

"I don't know if my heart can take this whole 'find the hidden celebrity thing that's going on around here if that's true. It's way too much of a mind blower. Not that I didn't deal with a whole lot of weird on the Hellmouth, but this is next level deranged crossover mad fan-fic writer freaky." Who knew, maybe this was some fandom crazed witches dream world where all their lives were just being played with for some greater being's amusement. Who the hell even knew anymore.

"Don't forget the Incas', Aztecs', Mayans and the Indus Valley people. They never get nearly enough credit for their contributions to the world as we currently know it. There's also the Greeks and the Egyptians but everyone knows those stories. Not half as interesting. Though admittedly a lot less bloody than the Mesopotamians I think." Tara was talking ancient history with her! When was the last time anyone spoke ancient history with her? "Would history be your major?" This was so nice. How had she gone this long in life without someone like this to talk to. It just felt so... So.... Natural. So easy. So.... Welcoming. Like.... Coming Hom-

That thought could stop right there because Tara was talking again.

"But it should be." There was a deep warmth that came in the tone of her voice as the most sincere smile spread across the redhead's lips. "You're a person, and you're alive, and you're making it through something that's really tough to go through. You should be completely recognized and celebrated for that." And maybe - just maybe - there was something in Willow's tone that would hint that - perhaps - she meant that just a little more for Tara than she would for the populace of the world at large.

"Some of them are from comic books, so we'd need Xander to identify them." She smiled her crooked little smile, unsure if she should be smiling or not. Tara was just happy to be with Willow.

"Egyptians. We could spend a whole day on Cleopatra. I bet she was a witch." Tara shook her head, "I'm actually an art major. Art history, art theory, all that stuff. But I dabble in history." She grinned smugly, as a joke.

Tara looked down at her shoes. "It was just never a big deal before because of my parents. You guys turned that around for me. You guys became my real family. Made me feel like a person."

"People from comic books? I'd be afraid of Xander hyperventilating or, or maybe even fainting from sheer comic geek overload." Which she could just picture him flailing around, and talking a million miles a minute right now. He'd either flip out, or be completely in love with were they were right now. Probably both the more she thought about it really.

"She was totally a witch." Willow couldn't help the enthusiasm in her voice or the grin on her face at the ability to theorize who was or wasn't a magic user in history. "With all those stories about how everyone was falling in love with her left and right, I bet she had some crazy enchantment from Hathor or maybe Bastet." There was a beat before Willow's features lit up even more. "Oh! Oh! Or what about Min? I bet it was Min." Then the realization that all those deities had to do with sex and sexuality sank in and the redheaded witch attempted not to blush. "Oh you, know, maybe you know..." There was a linger trail off as she tried to figure out someone else and just... Failed. "someone... else." Okay, now Willow felt a little awkward, not bad, but... Yeah, okay. Next topic.

"It can be a thing now. A non-parent thing with all the cool kids. Assuming you consider Buffy and I cool kids, which I think we do pretty well for ourselves, we know how to get on with the get down." She was really... Over selling this and probably making herself look mondo non-cool. "Oh! Buffy said the Bronze is here, we could always go dance it up if you want?" And all along Willow continued to hold Tara's hand if they stood still, or continued to move along. With each passing moment she seemed to settle into the simple contact more and more until near the end of her current rambling it almost felt like the most natural thing in the world to be standing here, hold Tara's hand, and talking with the other woman without a care in the world.

"Anya would get so jealous," she said with a smile on her face. It was probably good Xander wasn't here, he could make things awkward, and they were already awkward with Willow's timeline.

Tara bit her lip and smiled slightly, "Yeah, Min, I could see that." She noticed the blush on Willow's face and wanted to poke her in the nose. Or even lean forward and kiss her. But she had to be slow about this. Gentle.

"Should we get going?" Tara started to walk, still holding Willow's hand, off towards Buffy's place.

"No on wants to deal with green eyed envy Anya." Willow couldn't help but shake her head with the idea of Anya having jealousy issues more than any of the other issues she may have already had. Which conidering who they were talking about? Those issues were legion enough without attempting to add to the list. She'd have to remember to never bring this up to Anya if... Well, if she ever saw the other woman again, and maybe for Xander's sake Willow hoped a little that maybe he wouldn't show up here, even if she did really miss her best friend.

"Yup. Min it is." Her tone was a little unintentionally rushed as the implications of what Min encompassed rolled around in her head a little. "You know who else I bet was a witch? Joan of Arc. How else could she pull off all her great feats without a little magic, right?" Because moving this topic onto other potentially famous and unrecogized witches of history was way easier than talking about sex and sexuality with someone you apparntly had had sexy fun times with in another time and place with another you and... Oh god Willow's head was going to explode if she kept going around and around like this.

"Oh, um, yeah." A soft smile was offered, something sincere and a bit sheepish. "Wouldn't want to hold the birthday girl up from her evening." The smile shifted to be a bit less sheepish, but it was still undoubtedly shy as the redhead started to meander along next to Tara.

"We can do the other stuff whenever you want." There was a pause. "Not to say we can't do it tonight, because we can totally do it tonight if you want to do it tonight." A beat before she quickly added on. "The ritual! Of course. I mean, what else would you want to do tonight after getting a belly full of cake with a full house at Buffy's, right?" Oh goddess she was fucking this up. "Besides, why not get all the birthday stuff out of the way in one swoop, right? Unless you don't want to, and then that's way more important because it's your birthday. Kind of. It's birthday adjacent.... A half birthday birthday but still just as important as a full birthday birthday." She really needed to stop talking.

"Anya's pretty scary. She took over the Magic Box when Giles went away, and she looooved money. It was kind of cute." Tara tilted her head and smiled a little.

"Joan of Arc was totally a witch. She was talking to many gods, I think." Tara nodded. Gently, she let go of Willow's hand, realizing she was still holding it. Wow, that was awkward. She didn't mean to hang on to Willow. Maybe Willow was too shy to say anything? Tara bit her lip. "We can do the ritual tonight. The basement's got plenty of room and I don't think Buffy would mind as long as we don't break anything or bring any bad spirits into the house."

The thought of Anya taking over the magic box caused a very obvious combination of surprise and doubt to mix across Willow’s face. Anya? Ruling anything? She always seemed so.... Lazy... And money and Xander centric. How could that woman successfully run anything? Though, Anya was pretty bossy and did have the background to know what magics did What and how.... So, maybe - just maybe - she wasn’t a completely awful choice after all.

“Completely talking to many gods. There was way too much going on there for her to always be bending the ear of the same god.” The redhead couldn’t help but confirm Taras’s Thoughts and theory. It made perfect sense really when you thought about it too. The slow release of her hand was met with some hesitation. Nothing too awkward or uncomfortable but.... She... Had been enjoying that.... But Tara wanted her hand back and Tara was the birthday girl so it didn’t matter that a slight sadness was settling into her bones after releasing the other woman’s hand. Instead, Willow would cup her hands within themselves and listen to what the other woman had to say.

“Tonight it is!” Came the cheerful confirmation. “And no breaking things or summoning demons, got it. Pretty sure we should be plenty safe against those things while attempting to preform a positive ritual.... Unless there are like protection demons, which I don’t think there are, but sometimes you can never really be too sure. You’ve never heard anything about a protection demon, have you?” It was partly a joke and at this point also part sincere curiosity because well... who the heck knew sometimes? This was a pretty crazy world after all.

Tara nodded, agreeing with Willow about Joan of Arc. Just... not saying anything about it. Because they suddenly weren't holding hands anymore.

She began walking back towards Buffy's place-- well, her place too. "I don't think there's protective demons. That's a little counter intuitive," she said with a smile.

"I haven't done much magic while I've been here, but I think it's pretty safe. Just... not in front of anyone."

"Can you imagine if there were protective demons though? Talk about having a constant existential crisis every minute of every day of your life." An exaggerated exhale of air was released to be a showing of the joke there and what a relief it was not to ever have to deal with that particular struggle.

"Right. No, that makes complete sense. You can never know how people are going to react to...." Willow couldn't help falling quiet for a brief second as her mind flickered over the conversation with Buffy regarding homophobia briefly, and how... Comparable this conversation was to that.

"That sort of stuff."

"And there hasn't been much use for it. I try to only do it when I need it. Otherwise you get dependent on it and it can ruin you." She wanted to get this in Willow's head early in her magic career. Don't fuck it up, Willow.

"I met some other kids our age that do magic. We should visit them sometime." Tara went up the front steps and rummaged for her key in her giant hobo bag.

"It's not good to get out of practice though." It was a sincere question and maybe since Tara - from what Willow could piece together - was a born witch she didn't really need to practice? However, Willow was more than sure she'd need to practice, and lots. If she wanted to make sure she was helpful to Buffy she needed to have more knowledge, more access, more ability as a whole. "A rusty magic user is no one's friend." There was a sincerity or belief there even if she still wasn't attempting to fight with the other woman all at once.

"Really?" The redhead couldn't help but perk up a bit at the notion of other magic users being around. "That would be amazing! Do we think we could do a spell swap or-or maybe like a spell potluck or something? Have everything bring a little something from their world?" It was a silly idea on some levels, but at the same time weirdly exciting all at once.

"I think they're magic is different than ours, kind of like how Harry Potter's magic is different. But there's still some fundamental basics. Practical magic." Tara unlocked the door and swung it open for Willow to walk in too.

"Maybe after the holiday, they're probably all busy having their stuff." She paused, holding her keys tightly in her hand. "You read to go do this ritual?"

"I wonder if we examined the fundamental differences occurring in practice and execution if we could find a singular common strand connecting the various world and timelines of magic, and from there we might be able to identify a similar frequency everyone is working from to utilize their spell casting. Can you imagine if we could find one greater magical continuum that could be channeled and connected into by the residents here?" Okay, even Willow could recognize the major nerd alert that sort of musing would probably cause in a mass majority of the population. Regardless, she couldn't help the clear excitement and joy streaking nakedly across her features at the thought of mixing some scientific principles in with their collection of magic users here.

Right. There was still a holiday to get through for most people, wasn't there? Okay, that took a bit of steam out of her sails but.... It didn't mean it still couldn't happen!

"Ready as an oxygen in a bar full of hydrogen!" Hopefully Tara wouldn't put too much thought into Willow's attempt at a joke otherwise she might get the fact that Willow had inadvertently made a joke about elements that bonded together in chemistry.... Or potentially hinted a threesome. Oh gods no. No, no, no, no, no, no. It took everything within her not to blush as the secondary possible unintentional meaning came to mind.

Instead? Willow would step through the door quickly, trying to shield hide her face for just a moment before feeling like she'd gotten herself back together again.

"You ready too?"

Tara just watched as Willow got so excited over magic. To Tara, magic was just something natural, something for protection. But maybe Willow saw it as a project. While the idea of having a magical get-together sounded good, it could also devolve into a magical orgy. No thanks. "Yeah, Will, maybe we could try that..."

When the joke was made, Tara covered her mouth, the grin peeking out anyway. "I'm ready." And with that, they disappeared downstairs.
