Character(s): Elena Gilbert and Klaus Mikaelson
Rating: PG-13, TBA
Cautions/Warnings: Language, pissy!Elena, sassy!Klaus Sassmeister?, most probably bluds.
Location: Fishing Area
Approximate Date: TBD for specifics, some time after this though
Status: Openish (PM to join)

Lots of brooding usually led to militant "usefulness" with Elena, and that was why she could be found sitting on a rock early one morning as she struggled with a long branch and a piece of twine that someone had salvaged from the cave, in what was claimed to be the best fishing area on the island. Somehow she felt that if she could provide for someone, anyone really, it would absolve some of the guilt she was riddled with over the events of the past weeks. There was also the option of resolving things, but she wasn't quite ready to confront Damon just yet, and she still had a lot of things to sort out in her own head before she could even make that step. So for now, it was fishing to cleanse the sins of the guilt ridden, and had she been less preoccupied with the task at hand, she could have probably found humour in the almost-Biblical style way in which she was trying to find retribution.

As it was, Elena had just about had enough of the twine that simply would not stay untangled. Carefully picking out knots for what felt like the hundredth time, she fished another small insect out of her bucket, attached it as well as the small rock in place of a weight, and tossed it back into the sea as far as she could. It wasn't far at all, in fact it had landed embarrassingly close to shore, but at least their wasn't anyone to witness the failure. After all, this form of retribution was more about the solitude required for her to make peace with her own thoughts than any real effort to reap some rewards from her time out on the rocks. She flexed her hand slightly as she looked at the wounds she held on her left arm. The two puncture wounds at the base of her wrist were healing surprisingly well, already scabbed over, but the same could not be said for the self-inflicted gash in the centre of her palm. It was not in an ideal position for healing over, honestly, and every time she so much as moved her hand the wound re-opened at least a little bit. This time was no different. Elena winced as she picked the stick up with the wrong hand and felt the scab on her palm tear yet again.

With a soft huff, she wiped the trace amounts of blood on her shorts and tried to ignore the dull throbbing ache as she pulled the twine in again and repeated the act of "fishing" once more: untangle, fling out, wait, pull in, repeat. She was not patient enough for a pastime like this, it seemed. After over an hour and only one, tiny catch she was almost ready to give up. She probably would have too, if it wasn't for the real reason she was sitting on the rock in the first place. Retribution wasn't a fast acting relief, as much as Elena was trying to force it to be.

Klaus grinned a bit fondly, a bit patronizingly at her defiant stare, because he could tell that it was practiced with care. She was trying so hard to keep her chin up, but Klaus could read her like a book. He'd seen the way she jumped, and he could tell with every line of tension in her slender body that she was close to breaking. A very, very small and ancient part of him felt for her, but most of him just felt rather amused at the fact. He had a lot of conflicting emotions at most times in his life. It was difficult to be diabolical and still have that trace of human inside of him. He'd never quite been able to quell that part of him that thirsted for companionship. He'd never been able to figure out exactly how to get someone to stick by him without having him force their hand, though.

The fish squirmed in his hand, and so he leaned over and just tossed the fish into her makeshift bucket, right in time with her throwing her small fish at his feet. He smirked, amused that they thought the same way and relishing the fact that Elena probably hated the fact. "I only ask because you look frustrated, Elena," he told her, stepping closer and balancing on rocks before he stood beside her. He knew that she hated him being as close as he was right now, but part of him enjoyed forcing his company on people who seemed to hate it. He knew at least that some people had a grudging fondness for him. Every story needed a villain, after all. "Not relaxed at all."

He sat down beside Elena without regard for her not wanting him around, reaching into the water and letting the soft current play around his fingertips. He glanced over to her and smirked at the question. "You know as well as anyone I can walk during the day, love. I'm not bound to the tiresome restriction of only prowling the night," he told her.

Elena, unsurprisingly, kept her eyes on Klaus as he came closer to her. It wasn't even that she thought that he would do something if she looked away, honestly, it was more the ability to hold onto one small piece of control that she had. If all she had left was watching Klaus long enough for her to recognise potential warning signs that the vampire was up to something, then so be it. She had to take what she could get, and with the events of the last few weeks, she was desperate for something that could make her feel even remotely like the girl who had left Mystic Falls what felt like years ago.

"I look frustrated because this rope won't do what rope is supposed to do," she said with clipped tones, eyeing him with distaste before slapping the makeshift fishing rod down next to her and leaning back to look up at the sun, eyes briefly slipping shut. "No matter, though. There's hardly a shortage of relaxing activities on this island now, is there?"

She flashed the briefest of smirks and shifted to the side as Klaus sat down, moving just a fraction away from him. She liked her personal space the way it usually was, after all. Klaus free. Elena knew exactly what she wanted to be doing with her time. She wanted to be with Bonnie and Caroline, getting ready for another stupid Founding Family dance that they all complained about having to attend, even if they all knew that they loved them. She wanted just one Salvatore to be taking her, though as much as she tried she still couldn't decide who's face she was picturing. Despite the presence of Klaus as close as she was, a tiny sigh escaped her lips and she shook her head, looking out at the water.

"The real nasties are supposed to stick to the shadows. You know, monster under the bed and all that. Couldn't you have stuck to the status quo this once? I'm sure sun walking is an unfair advantage. For you, anyway." She raised her eyebrows as she shot him a look, more annoyed than angry for once, though. She picked up the twine again and started to untangle it again, fingers moving slowly and more carefully that time. All the determination in the world (and Elena really did have it in spades) wouldn't seem to make it work though. "What do you want, Klaus?"

Klaus wasn't actually looking to cause any sort of drama tonight. He was merely out for a stroll in the mid-afternoon sun. He just couldn't resist ruffling some feathers by coming across someone who less than appreciated his presence. He wasn't 'up to anything' so to speak, merely looking for something to pass the time. It really was rather boring on this island with nothing to sabotage and no one to terrorize. That was why he'd found Elena with glee.

"Sounds like quite a problem, love," Klaus said with a small grin, watching as she slammed the rope and line down on the ground beside her. He laughed when she pointedly said there was no shortage of relaxing things around here. "It is quite like a vacation resort, isn't it? White sand, blue seas, relaxing forests to explore."

He shook his head when Elena started going into why he should have stayed in the shadows. "Come on, love. I'm not that bad, am I?" he asked with a smirk, knowing that in fact, in her mind, he was just that bad. That was all right, because he'd always been the big bad wolf to everyone and it wasn't an unfamiliar role for him to play. He was the half-breed, the bastard child, the monster. "Same as you are, Elena. Looking for something relaxing to pass the time. And you looked a little lonely."

"It's picturesque. Shame we don't have the option of leaving or it'd be perfect," Elena replied with a grim look on her face, clearly losing patience with the length of twine that was stubbornly refusing to detangle despite her best efforts. The rope wasn't even that important, nor was the fishing, it was just supposed to be a distraction from everything happening in her life at that moment. Unfortunately, it wasn't working at all, and Klaus' appearance certainly did nothing to help that.

"Not that bad? Would you like me to answer that honestly, because I'm sure you wouldn't like the answer." She paused for a second. Actually, Klaus would probably love nothing more than for her to detail exactly how awful she thought he was, for her to show how much he got to her. "On second thought, I don't think you need the ego boost."

It was all she could do not to forcibly fling the stick and rope away from her, in a worse mood than ever with the lack of co-operation on the twines part. She would just have to find another way to make herself useful. Placing it down again gently, despite the shaking of her hands that made it clear that she wanted to do anything but, Elena took a very slow breath to try and get herself back to a semi-neutral state before she looked at Klaus.

"Well, I'm not lonely. I'm anything but lonely, in fact." She spoke firmly, though Klaus had hit a nerve. She wouldn't give him the satisfaction of that knowledge, but the mess of emotions surrounding Stefan and Jenna's arrival had Elena isolating herself more than ever, and she longed for the days of the past when things felt much easier. "Have you seen Stefan? Apparently he's done playing slave..."

She looked at Klaus carefully as she spoke, trying not to seem too interested in his answer. She had her doubts that he would just let his hold over the Salvatore go without a fight.

Klaus just chuckled at the grimness of Elena's words, and he shook his head. She really was so good at the stubborn, brooding role, he thought to himself as he reached down and dipped his hand into the river, watching the way the ripples of water went around his fingers as the current pulled it further downstream. He knew that his presence was unnerving to Elena, and while part of him didn't rightly care, another part of him relished the fact.

"You wound me, love," he mocked her when she said he didn't need the ego boost by having her tell him how bad she thought he was. It was true that he wasn't necessarily an angel and he had a temper and was incredibly spiteful, not to mention the fact that he'd kind of done whatever he had to in order to achieve his endgame - including hurting a fair few of her friends in the process - but that didn't make him the ultimate evil, did it? Obviously she'd never met Mikael.

His brows rose at Elena's tone when he found that he'd hit a nerve with the 'lonely' comment. He'd always been good at that kind of thing. When she instead brought up Stefan, it explained everything. "No, I haven't had the pleasure of seeing him. He was done playing slave a while back," he drawled, expression and inflection neutral as he licked over his lips. "I assume since you're asking, he's had the unfortunate pleasure to be stuck on this island as well?"

The ironic thing was that Klaus had had the suspicion that Stefan was behind the disappearance of his coffins. or he thought he had something to do with it because he was spiteful for all the things Klaus had done to the people he loved, and for that he had a more reserved feeling toward the younger vampire. At the same time, he felt a mild sort of longing for the friendship and camaraderie he'd felt with him back in the 1920's, similar to the longing he felt toward Eric - both of which went completely unspoken.

He and Stefan had gone through a lot in those years, but he couldn't bring himself to actively think about it. He had more important things to worry about, like finding the upper hand in a place where it seemed the surroundings had the ultimate upper hand. It was hard to overcome a landscape that was ever-changing and didn't seem to have a flaw in its makeup. That was all right; he'd figure it out.

"I'm sure you'll bounce back," Elena retorted quickly, pressing her fingers to her temples briefly as she let out a slow exhale of breath. Klaus really did push all her buttons and try as she might, she was sure she would require the patience of a saint to deal with Klaus. She cast her eyes briefly heavens way, before sitting up a little straighter and clasping her hands together tightly in her lap. She wasn't going to let him get to her, she was determined to make sure he didn't. He wouldn't win on that front.

"Yes, he's here, and he's certain that he's done with you. If that's the case, I want him included in our deal," she said, raising her eyebrows at Klaus and turning her hand enough that Klaus could see his wound on her wrist. Although, Elena doubted that he had forgotten so soon. "No one I love gets hurt. That's what I asked for. That includes the new arrivals."

It was a relief to hear from Klaus as well that Stefan was done with him. While she hadn't doubted Stefan's word, she also understood the complications that came with making deals with Klaus, not to mention Stefan being just as quick to martyr himself as she was. Still, Klaus' comment seemed genuine enough, and perhaps she could actually allow herself to hope that things were becoming even slightly less complicated. On this island, away from all the hybrids, and curses, and magic, perhaps things could actually settle down a bit.
