Lots of brooding usually led to militant "usefulness" with Elena, and that was why she could be found sitting on a rock early one morning as she struggled with a long branch and a piece of twine that someone had salvaged from the cave, in what was claimed to be the best fishing area on the island. Somehow she felt that if she could provide for someone, anyone really, it would absolve some of the guilt she was riddled with over the events of the past weeks. There was also the option of resolving things, but she wasn't quite ready to confront Damon just yet, and she still had a lot of things to sort out in her own head before she could even make that step. So for now, it was fishing to cleanse the sins of the guilt ridden, and had she been less preoccupied with the task at hand, she could have probably found humour in the almost-Biblical style way in which she was trying to find retribution.

As it was, Elena had just about had enough of the twine that simply would not stay untangled. Carefully picking out knots for what felt like the hundredth time, she fished another small insect out of her bucket, attached it as well as the small rock in place of a weight, and tossed it back into the sea as far as she could. It wasn't far at all, in fact it had landed embarrassingly close to shore, but at least their wasn't anyone to witness the failure. After all, this form of retribution was more about the solitude required for her to make peace with her own thoughts than any real effort to reap some rewards from her time out on the rocks. She flexed her hand slightly as she looked at the wounds she held on her left arm. The two puncture wounds at the base of her wrist were healing surprisingly well, already scabbed over, but the same could not be said for the self-inflicted gash in the centre of her palm. It was not in an ideal position for healing over, honestly, and every time she so much as moved her hand the wound re-opened at least a little bit. This time was no different. Elena winced as she picked the stick up with the wrong hand and felt the scab on her palm tear yet again.

With a soft huff, she wiped the trace amounts of blood on her shorts and tried to ignore the dull throbbing ache as she pulled the twine in again and repeated the act of "fishing" once more: untangle, fling out, wait, pull in, repeat. She was not patient enough for a pastime like this, it seemed. After over an hour and only one, tiny catch she was almost ready to give up. She probably would have too, if it wasn't for the real reason she was sitting on the rock in the first place. Retribution wasn't a fast acting relief, as much as Elena was trying to force it to be.

Klaus just chuckled at the grimness of Elena's words, and he shook his head. She really was so good at the stubborn, brooding role, he thought to himself as he reached down and dipped his hand into the river, watching the way the ripples of water went around his fingers as the current pulled it further downstream. He knew that his presence was unnerving to Elena, and while part of him didn't rightly care, another part of him relished the fact.

"You wound me, love," he mocked her when she said he didn't need the ego boost by having her tell him how bad she thought he was. It was true that he wasn't necessarily an angel and he had a temper and was incredibly spiteful, not to mention the fact that he'd kind of done whatever he had to in order to achieve his endgame - including hurting a fair few of her friends in the process - but that didn't make him the ultimate evil, did it? Obviously she'd never met Mikael.

His brows rose at Elena's tone when he found that he'd hit a nerve with the 'lonely' comment. He'd always been good at that kind of thing. When she instead brought up Stefan, it explained everything. "No, I haven't had the pleasure of seeing him. He was done playing slave a while back," he drawled, expression and inflection neutral as he licked over his lips. "I assume since you're asking, he's had the unfortunate pleasure to be stuck on this island as well?"

The ironic thing was that Klaus had had the suspicion that Stefan was behind the disappearance of his coffins. or he thought he had something to do with it because he was spiteful for all the things Klaus had done to the people he loved, and for that he had a more reserved feeling toward the younger vampire. At the same time, he felt a mild sort of longing for the friendship and camaraderie he'd felt with him back in the 1920's, similar to the longing he felt toward Eric - both of which went completely unspoken.

He and Stefan had gone through a lot in those years, but he couldn't bring himself to actively think about it. He had more important things to worry about, like finding the upper hand in a place where it seemed the surroundings had the ultimate upper hand. It was hard to overcome a landscape that was ever-changing and didn't seem to have a flaw in its makeup. That was all right; he'd figure it out.

"I'm sure you'll bounce back," Elena retorted quickly, pressing her fingers to her temples briefly as she let out a slow exhale of breath. Klaus really did push all her buttons and try as she might, she was sure she would require the patience of a saint to deal with Klaus. She cast her eyes briefly heavens way, before sitting up a little straighter and clasping her hands together tightly in her lap. She wasn't going to let him get to her, she was determined to make sure he didn't. He wouldn't win on that front.

"Yes, he's here, and he's certain that he's done with you. If that's the case, I want him included in our deal," she said, raising her eyebrows at Klaus and turning her hand enough that Klaus could see his wound on her wrist. Although, Elena doubted that he had forgotten so soon. "No one I love gets hurt. That's what I asked for. That includes the new arrivals."

It was a relief to hear from Klaus as well that Stefan was done with him. While she hadn't doubted Stefan's word, she also understood the complications that came with making deals with Klaus, not to mention Stefan being just as quick to martyr himself as she was. Still, Klaus' comment seemed genuine enough, and perhaps she could actually allow herself to hope that things were becoming even slightly less complicated. On this island, away from all the hybrids, and curses, and magic, perhaps things could actually settle down a bit.
