Elena closed up her diary and stuck the pen behind her ear. The beach was quiet, the temperature slowly dropping as the sun began to sink, and it had been the perfect place to think. Even though she hadn't written much, it still helped to get some of the mess going on in her brain down on to paper and (hopefully, at least) out of her head. With a small sigh of something close to relief, Elena stretched out and lay back on the sand, head propped up just enough that she would be able to get a good view of the sun once it began to sink behind the horizon.
The view really were gorgeous this time of evening. With the orange sky casting a warm glow over the beach, and the only sounds audible being the distant chirping of birds in the trees, Elena allowed herself to take a moment just look around. This place wasn't Mystic Falls, that she was certain of, but it certainly wasn't all bad. She never would have gotten this kind of peace there. Another sigh escaped, not nearly as relieved this time and more just echoing a slight disappointment. She missed home. Damon was here, but that brought so much more confusion in the way of her feelings that she quickly pushed the thought from her mind. Caroline was with her, too, and she thanked her lucky stars for that. She didn't know what she'd do without her best friend there. Still, despite the comfort and support her friends had given her in this mess of times, she still felt lonely, and the reason why began completely with an 'S' and ended with an 'tefan'. He may not have been her Stefan any more, and she was so glad that he wasn't stuck here with them, but at a moment like that, she just wished she could feel his arms wrapped securely around her one more time.
Still, with a brief glance towards the water, she reminded herself that it was for the best. She would just have to make do.
