Dear diary...

Elena closed up her diary and stuck the pen behind her ear. The beach was quiet, the temperature slowly dropping as the sun began to sink, and it had been the perfect place to think. Even though she hadn't written much, it still helped to get some of the mess going on in her brain down on to paper and (hopefully, at least) out of her head. With a small sigh of something close to relief, Elena stretched out and lay back on the sand, head propped up just enough that she would be able to get a good view of the sun once it began to sink behind the horizon.

The view really were gorgeous this time of evening. With the orange sky casting a warm glow over the beach, and the only sounds audible being the distant chirping of birds in the trees, Elena allowed herself to take a moment just look around. This place wasn't Mystic Falls, that she was certain of, but it certainly wasn't all bad. She never would have gotten this kind of peace there. Another sigh escaped, not nearly as relieved this time and more just echoing a slight disappointment. She missed home. Damon was here, but that brought so much more confusion in the way of her feelings that she quickly pushed the thought from her mind. Caroline was with her, too, and she thanked her lucky stars for that. She didn't know what she'd do without her best friend there. Still, despite the comfort and support her friends had given her in this mess of times, she still felt lonely, and the reason why began completely with an 'S' and ended with an 'tefan'. He may not have been her Stefan any more, and she was so glad that he wasn't stuck here with them, but at a moment like that, she just wished she could feel his arms wrapped securely around her one more time.

Still, with a brief glance towards the water, she reminded herself that it was for the best. She would just have to make do.

Stefan wanted Elena to believe that everything was going to be okay. He wanted her to feel safe, protected, and loved, just like she deserved. It didn't make sense to him, to turn off his humanity and continue on with being Klaus' slave when the girl he loved was right here, practically begging him to come back to her. He just wanted it to go back to the way it was, and for the moment, he was willing to believe that it could go back, that they could fight Klaus and save their relationship. He wanted nothing more.

"God, I missed you too," he said into her hair, breathing fast, still holding her and not wanting to let her go. When she pulled back, he took the time to look over her face, the familiar features he hadn't seen in what felt like forever. He cupped her cheek and thumbed over the bone, just underneath her eye. "I love you too," he said without hesitation.

He kissed her back thoughtlessly, not questioning anything, not worrying about Klaus or anyone else but the girl in his arms. It'd just been so long, and here they were standing in the sand with the darkness surrounding them, nothing here but the whisper of the wind and the soft sway of the trees. It was beautiful, it was perfect, and he wasn't going to ruin it. Not again.

For a brief second, Elena was surprised. She almost hadn't expected him to kiss her back, had been fearing the push away, that Klaus' hold over him was still strong enough to keep Stefan in the place of trying to push her away. She kissed him back and for a few moments there she genuinely forgot everything. There wasn't any island, or deal with Klaus, and it wasn't until she pulled away that her heart sank slightly. Things were more complicated than ever now, and she smiled sadly at Stefan as she took his hands and squeezed them lightly.

"Stefan, there are some things that you have to know " she said, voice soft as her gaze dropped to the floor. She loved Stefan, but she couldn't act like the past few weeks with Damon hadn't happened. She wasn't lying when she told Damon that she had feelings for him too, and now that both brothers were here she had to figure out exactly what she was going to do. She had meant it - she didn't want to be Katherine. Her doppelgänger may have thought it was okay to love them both, but Elena didn't agree, and until she got her feelings in check, she had to make everyone aware of where she was at.

"Klaus is here," Firstly, she had to make sure Stefan knew that. She dropped her hands and one hand wrapped around the wrist that he had drank from, trying to discretely cover the healing wound there. She kept her eyes lowered as she spoke - not out of guilt, she didn't regret te decisions that she had made, but she wasn't sure if she was ready to see Stefan's reaction. "But there's something else. Damon is too, he arrived with me and well- Stefan. We kissed."

Stefan had realized the instant he'd seen Elena sitting on the beach looking lost and alone that he'd spent too much time hating Klaus, too much time trying to fight him, trying to win, that he'd let the one thing he cared about more than anything else slip away from him. Yes, he'd gone off with Klaus initially to save Damon, but he could've found some way to come back to Elena without breaking his word, he could've done something other than fall right into Klaus' traps every time.

But that was then, and he was done being Klaus' slave. He was done spending all of his time and energy on hate and revenge. He just wanted Elena. He wanted to make her feel safe, he wanted to spend time with her and find the same balance they'd had in the beginning of their relationship. Things had been so good back then; they'd both been so happy. He wanted to get that back more than anything.

Unfortunately, when Elena spoke up and said that there were things he needed to know, his stomach immediately sunk and he knew that chances were, a game changer was going to come out of her mouth. He'd known about Klaus and nodded to let her know that he was aware, eyeing her movement with her wrist but not saying anything because he was honestly too worried about what she was going to say next to question her about it.

When he heard that she and Damon had kissed, he had to look away from her for a moment. As a vampire, emotions were more intense, and he couldn't deny that it hurt him to the core to hear that Elena was straying towards his brother. He should've known that it was going to happen, and he'd honestly expected it, but it still... it wasn't fun hearing it, and there was no hiding the pained look on his face. "It's all right," he somehow managed to say. He rubbed his cheek with one hand, still not quite looking at her. "I was the one who left. You didn't... you didn't do anything wrong, Elena. It's my fault. You're entitled to feel any way you want."

Elena looked up to catch the hurt expression on Stefan's face, and while she had known when she told him that this would be his reaction, she couldn't help but feel awful that she was the one to cause that pain. Everything had suddenly become more complex, with Stefan's return. He was no longer blindly following Klaus' every desire, somehow it would have been easier if he had been, and Elena was faced with nothing but her own decision to make. There was no outside factors for her to take into account. It was just her, and her feelings for Stefan, and her feelings for Damon. She bit her lower lip for a moment, gently, and gave Stefan a faint, sad smile as she shook her head.

"It's not your fault. It's so much more than anyone's fault, Stefan. This is just how things have happened. I can't say that it wouldn't have happened if you hadn't left, but that doesn't make it your fault, and it's not his either so please don't be mad with him again, okay? This is on me, and-"

Her breath hitched and she folded her arms over her chest, looking towards the ocean as the last glimmers of light sank behind the horizon, sighing softly before dropping her gaze to the floor once more. "I can't make my decision now. I need to take some time, think about it. I'm sorry, I...I really am, Stefan. I never wanted things to end up this way, none of us did, but it has and now I just have to deal. I still love you so much but I can't pretend that what happened with me and Damon didn't happen."

Stefan didn't want to follow Klaus anymore, but he had to admit, when Elena told him what she did, for a moment he just wanted to turn off his emotions and be done with it. He hadn't expected Elena to wait for him blindly, of course he hadn't, but he'd loved her so fiercely and he'd been so convinced that she felt the same way that he hadn't thought this possibility could ever actually come to fruition. But despite his hopes, Elena was in love with his brother, just like Katherine had been so many years ago, and it hurt just as badly now as it did back then.

He didn't know what was going to happen, but he was glad that at least now, he was on a fair playing field with Damon. There were no outside circumstances that were keeping him away from her, at least not pressing ones, and at this point it all came down to what she felt, where her heart was. Stefan couldn't deny that he wished there didn't have to be a decision, that Elena would just know that she wanted him in the same way that he knew with every fiber in his being that she was the only one for him, but he supposed that some things couldn't be helped.

"I'm not angry with Damon," Stefan said truthfully. "I'm angry at myself." He'd known all along that Damon had feelings for Elena; his brother had never really made an effort to hide it from him. He'd taken a huge risk in leaving, knowing that Damon would go for Elena full throttle, but there was nothing he could do about it now, and if Damon won her from him in the end, then he would just have to live with that. He still didn't regret saving Damon, and he wasn't mad that he'd fallen for Elena. He didn't blame him for it, honestly.

When he saw her getting visibly distressed, he reached up and thumbed over her cheek, stopping the tears before they came. His chest ached when she said that she needed time to think about it-- again, he wished she didn't have to, he wished it was as glaring and obvious and uncomplicated as his own feelings-- but he nodded nonetheless, accepting her words as gracefully as he could manage. "I love you, too. I always will," he told her, voice firm and reassuring. His jaw ticked at the mention of what happened between she and Damon, but he didn't acknowledge it otherwise. He didn't want to make her feel any worse than she already did. Nodding again, he reluctantly took a step back and said, "I'll give you some space, then. Whatever you need."

It hadn't been that long ago that Elena was shocked that Damon would think that she would kiss her back. It hadn't even really been that long since she had met the 'Other Salvatore', and had slapped him for so much trying to make a move on her. Less than two years later, and look where she was now. In love with one brother, in...she had no idea what with the other. Elena had never thought she would end up in this position, not for a second, and even the thought of it made her feel dizzy for a second. Well, perhaps that was the after effects of the night before, but all the same. There were too many thoughts running through her head, without enough room to be fully processed or understood, and Stefan's gentle hand on her cheek (far from making things simpler and better the way it used to) just served to add to that.

Elena brought her hand up to rest on the back of Stefan's, looked at him with as best a smile as she could manage and nodded. She gave his hand a gentle squeeze, bit her lower lip gently and her shoulders shrugged just a fraction, barely moving at all before she accompanied Stefan's slow step backwards with her gentle moving of his hand from her cheek back to his side. Stefan was a lot of things, but ultimately she knew that he was not a fighter. If she chose Damon, he would let her, because of that love. She didn't know if she could say the same for if the situation was reversed.

"I promise you Stefan, I'll figure this out. I'm not...asking you to wait. I'm not, and I know this isn't fair on anyone but I don't know what else I can do. I don't want to hurt either of you, but no matter what I do now that's what will happen." She pushed her hair off her face and tried to smile again, although each effort was slowly becoming smaller and less convincing with each attempt. She wasn't even really sure why she was trying in the first place, habit perhaps, or even an effort to try and convince Stefan that everything was okay with her. It would be easier for him if he wasn't concerned about her well-being too, on top of everything else. If she could maintain some semblance of a strong front, maybe she wouldn't have to see that crushed look in his eye again.

She paused for a beat, two even, then stepped in to give him another very brief tight hug. She let out a tumble of words in one long rush of air. "I'm so sorry Stefan. I have to go. I'll find you later." Another brief pause, and then she whispered against his ear, "Remember how this is done? Close your eyes." She allowed herself one last squeeze, and although her heart was aching and all she wanted to do was stay there with him, she still pulled away. She looked at him one last time, then turned away. She walked far enough to scoop up her diary, and then quickly stepped behind the tree line. it wasn't until she reached the clearing that would soon shield her from Stefan's line of sight that she looked back to him. She had to make a decision, and soon, for everyone's sake. But first, she had to speak to Damon. It wasn't until she got behind that tree that she allowed herself to cry.
