Who: Gryffindors in the Defence Club
What: First meeting!
Where: Gryffindor common room
When: Sunday the 19th of February, afternoon-ish
Status: Incomplete
Rating: PG most likely

Perhaps it wasn't entirely necessary to the outsider, but James couldn't go another day without calling a meeting of the newly formed Defence Club that afternoon. Everything was happening too quickly around them and he had a sinking feeling that things would only get worse. After all, now it was rumours inside of Hogwarts that had students on edge. Even their Professors had to address the issue by waving off the rumours with as much lack of attention as they thought they deserved. But James hadn't been convinced. If anything, the fact that the Professors even felt the need to mention these rumours showed just how much of a problem they were.

And then there was Sirius. He'd been acting strange on and off for the last few days. It hadn't slipped past James's notice that the strange behaviour seemed to begin right after the cursed Ball incident. However, not wanting to dwell on it further, he'd gotten the sign-up list from Remus and sent each person a little note, urging them to meet in the common room on Sunday afternoon. While James sat there with an anxious tension running through him, he let his knee bob up and down, hard enough to wear a hole with his nerves.

When Peter showed up, James latched onto the new situation with a fervour, standing from his seat and instead joining Peter opposite his. He avoided Lily's eyes as best as he could, having caught a bit of her conversation with Molly. The latter of the two girls didn't seem to like him much, nor did James really care, but he couldn't get past the feeling that perhaps she'd had something to do with Lily's little 'chat' which took him off guard.

Feeling a wave of resentment at his assumptions, he turned to Peter and plastered on his best jovial expression. No reason to get down about things when he could get his mind on other topics. "So Pete, have you seen Moony or Padfoot? Soon as those sods show up, we can start. Or I s'pose we could just go on without them. What d'you reckon?"

It wasn't like James to be indecisive. In this instance, he was just trying to focus more attention on his quieter friend, hoping that the boy would pipe up with his opinion and give James something else to think about. Anything but Lily. It was perhaps a selfish move that James couldn't be arsed to think deeply about. He just needed a distraction so that he'd be in his best form for the meeting.

The presence of his friend was something like a surprise, however Peter still gave his usual slight, shy smile as James dropped into a seat upside him.

It was something that slipped slightly, as his eyebrows rose, surprise flickering through his eyes. It was not usual that James would ask Peter's opinion like this, it usually would have been the other way around. Or one of the other boys to be question.

It felt strangely nice, he found.

"I think we should wait," Peter said, in his squeaky voice. "Moony will be able to help keep track of things, and I'm sure he'd know some nifty spells..."

Sirius was another matter.

Forcing a wider smile, he reached out and clapped James on the shoulder, sitting upright in the chair. "Sure Sirius wouldn't want to miss out either."

Glad that Peter at least wasn't looking at him in a sad way, or telling him ridiculous things, or making the whole bloody world come falling down, James smiled and sat up, tugging his mate along with.

"All right you tossers, let's get this show on the road! Time for the meeting!" There weren't that many people gathered in the common room yet but he figured it was now or never.

James headed for the middle of the common room to make sure he was good and heard, looking around him at those who started gathering. "C'mon, no time to lose! Did you see what the bloody hell's been going on out there, or am I the only one with some sense?"

Peter couldn't help the way his grin widened as James pulled him up from the chair and alongside him to the center of the room. Things had been incredibly troubling during this week, and it was honestly a relief to just...be.

Even if they were at a Defense meeting to do something to combat the rumors and the threat that came with it.

It was why he grinned so stupidly; Peter was embarrassed and relief, both. James was speaking, and Peter tilted his head back slightly, watching even as a few fellow Gryffindor's moved closer to the center of the room, to where James stood.

There were murmurs of agreement, whispers echoing between those that had signed the piece of parchment last time James had called attention to the common room.

"I'm sure it's safe to say everyone knows whats happening, and that something needs to be done..." Peter said, choosing now to stay by James' side, to offer some sort of reassurance where Sirius usually would have. He had not turned up it seemed, and that left a nagging in the back of his mind.

"But what can we do, James?"

Sirius sauntered into the room with a smirk on his face and a spring in his step.

"Hello there Gryffindorks." He sent a lacivious smile over to Molly and Lily, then made his way to the front of the classroom.

"I know, I know, you're all overawed by my presence, and I honestly can't say I blame you. I amaze myself on a daily basis. But I think it's time you children faced a few facts!" He jumped up on one of the desks and surveyed the room. "What is this? Defense Club? Honestly, this might just be the saddest collection of human beings I have ever seen. We have the Fearless Leader," he turned to James with a sneer. "Who's head is so far up his own ass that he can't even see that this fight is already lost. We've got the desperate, whiny loser clinging vainly to his coat tails," he tipped his hat to Peter. "The fat, shrewish bitch who can't keep her nose out of other peoples business," he winked at Molly, "and who else. Who am I missing... Oh yes, the mudblood slut who's running two men through their paces on a daily basis. Really, I'm terrified. You lot are going to change the world."

Peter was bewildered.

He stood staring at Sirius, eyes wide, his confusion written plainly across his pale features. It was just...hurtful, to have a long time friend come and just say such things.

"Sirius..." He had shifted in place, turning his eyes upon the other Wizard. He glanced towards James, and then Lily, and back to Sirius.

"You're b--being rude, calling Lily that...and acting this way. You should apologize..."

Glad for the words that Peter spoke up, he started to pat him on the back before the rather rude interruption by Sirius, whom they had all been awaiting. As the Gryffindors gathered about took stock of Sirius's words and many looked affronted, James felt his eyebrows lowering in what had to be a combination of annoyance and disgust.

He had to remind himself that Sirius hadn't been acting normally for the last few days, and after he reassured himself that he wouldn't try to punch him again, he sauntered over to Sirius and tugged hard on his arm, putting enough force into the pull to make sure that he and his errant friend were face to face.

"Padfoot," he whispered, hoping that using his nickname might spark some sense in the other boy, "you're not yourself right now. Shouldn't we go up to the dorm and let you rest it off?" It was a question, but not necessarily an option as far as James was concerned.

He tossed an apologetic look around to his friends, hoping that they wouldn't get too upset with Sirius's behaviour. Some of them had already experienced the erratic change in his dorm-mate, but others might be new to the experience.

Sirius sneered at James, shrugging himself out of his grip.

"Fuck off Potter. Keep your filthy blood traitor hands to yourself." He surveyed the room, then began sauntering toward the door.

"Have fun in your little meeting kids. Make sure to practice your sheild charms and the jelly legs jinx! Who knows, you might ever be able to make someone fall down before they kill you!"

James couldn't believe what he was hearing. It wasn't like he didn't expect it, but to actually hear it was a different story. He felt himself gaping at Sirius, disbelief and hurt written all over his face. He quickly covered it up with an angry expression at the vile things that he was saying. Before he could stop himself, he gave in to his anger and yelled out after Sirius:

"Get on then, before I hex your dumb arse!" With a barely contained growl, he turned back to the Gryffindors gathered about, passing them all a hot look.

"Just forget his buggering arse. He's being a prat. This isn't about stupid hexes that won't do anything serious," he insisted. "I mean real spells, defensive magic that won't just trip someone up, but keep them immobilised or disarm them. That's the real trick." James felt himself brightening in mood as he spoke, tackling an area that he knew how to handle.
