Who: Gryffindors in the Defence Club
What: First meeting!
Where: Gryffindor common room
When: Sunday the 19th of February, afternoon-ish
Status: Incomplete
Rating: PG most likely

Perhaps it wasn't entirely necessary to the outsider, but James couldn't go another day without calling a meeting of the newly formed Defence Club that afternoon. Everything was happening too quickly around them and he had a sinking feeling that things would only get worse. After all, now it was rumours inside of Hogwarts that had students on edge. Even their Professors had to address the issue by waving off the rumours with as much lack of attention as they thought they deserved. But James hadn't been convinced. If anything, the fact that the Professors even felt the need to mention these rumours showed just how much of a problem they were.

And then there was Sirius. He'd been acting strange on and off for the last few days. It hadn't slipped past James's notice that the strange behaviour seemed to begin right after the cursed Ball incident. However, not wanting to dwell on it further, he'd gotten the sign-up list from Remus and sent each person a little note, urging them to meet in the common room on Sunday afternoon. While James sat there with an anxious tension running through him, he let his knee bob up and down, hard enough to wear a hole with his nerves.

After her conversation with Molly the night before, Lily couldn't help but think about her "relationship" with James Potter. She definitely saw him in a different light, may have even come to like him in that kind of sense. It wasn't unusual for them to walk down the hall, their hands laced together. She had kept convincing herself that it was normal, something of comfort. There may have been a few stolen kisses here and there as well when they found themselves alone, but nothing else. She was beginning to wonder if they were an official couple without making it official.

She knew of the meeting and the time, but she went down to the common room earlier in hopes of finding James alone to talk to him about it. She was lucky to find it true and took her opportunity, not sure when the others would arrive.

"Hey," she said, walking over to take a seat next to him. "Um, could I talk to you about something? About...us?" She winced a little, thinking she sounded like those stupid school girls she gagged over. Still, she had to know.

He looked up from his thoughts when he heard her approach and address him, an instant smile lighting up his face. Taking her hand in his, he gave her a quick peck on the cheek before feeling himself relax. It was always a great day when Lily was around. James was so infatuated that he couldn't see beyond to read the dubious expression on Lily's pretty face.

"Hi! Sure, what did you want to talk about? We're about to have the defence meeting in a bit, but I reckon most of those sods'll show up late." He grinned as he ran his free hand through his hair, having yet to drop the habit.

She smiled as he reached out for her hand, giving her a small kiss on the cheek. It felt right, but what did it mean? She kept her hand in his and nodded her head. "Yeah, I wanted to try and catch you before the meeting," she said, shifting in her spot. Why did she feel so nervous? James liked her, she knew that much. But why did she feel like he might reject her?

"I was just wondering, you know...what are we? Are we...steady? Or is this just a passing fancy?" As soon as she said it, she knew it didn't sound quite right. "I mean, we've been acting like we're together, but we haven't really talked about it, you know? I just want to know where we stand is all."

James offered a thoughtful look as he dragged their linked hands into his lap, idly rubbing his thumb over the top of her hand as he considered her question. Looking down at their interlocked hands, he knew what to say then, giving Lily a sure look.

"I reckon you could say so, yeah. I've never been one for a lot of talk on the issue, I s'pose. Sorry if it came off as... er, up in the air? Well I mean," he started, as he realised that maybe there was a deeper meaning behind her question, "if you want to be steady. I thought you did?"

She shouldn't have been surprised, really. She had acted like she wanted to be, holding hands with him all the time, giving him kisses every now and then. How could she tell him that she wasn't quite ready for all that without hurting him? Suddenly she felt like she was dragging him along and felt guilty.

She took her hand from his gently, not wanting to mislead him anymore. "James, I really do like you," she said. "I just...I don't know if I'm ready for a that kind of a relationship. I guess I'm just needing some time, if that's alright. I mean, I have a great time with you and I find I always want to be in your company. But...this is a big deal. I mean, we only recently started talking and then we kind of just fall into this relationship? Maybe if we take things slow, I'll be ok with being your girlfriend." She glanced up to look at him, hoping she wouldn't see disappointment in his eyes, but understanding.

Disappointment was an understatement. He already found himself missing the warmth and comfort that her hand provided. All of a sudden he felt his face go white and his skin get chilly. It's okay, his mind tried telling him, she said she fancies you. James tried to put on a brave face, plastering a fake smile on his lips as he took a breath which he desperately hoped wouldn't be shaky.

"Yeah... I s'pose... I understand." He really did try to be sensible about it. After all, he'd been chasing her for years; he could wait another few weeks or months, couldn't he? The situation couldn't possibly be that bad, but as his heart hammered in his ears, all he could see was the memory of breakfast one morning that past week.

"Is it because you're already pining for someone? Aside from me?" It was asked quietly, uncertainly, Narcissa Black's words echoing all too loudly in his head.

She could see the disappoint on his face and how he struggled to keep it away. She wanted to reach out and take his hand again just to reassure him, but she kept it clasped in her own lap. She was a little surprised by his question; was she fancying anyone else? For the briefest moment, her thoughts flickered to Severus. No, that was silly. Severus was her best friend and they had just resolved matters of their past episode. She didn't care about him in that fashion.

She shook her head, her eyes still looking at him. "No, there's no one else," she said. "I just need some time to make sure this is what I really want. I mean...you'd be my first boyfriend. It just feels a little daunting is all." Her eyes searched his and she wanted to take back everything she had said. But she knew it was more practical to take some time and make sure this was what she really wanted and what was best for both of them.

"I'm sorry James," she said, her eyes turning downcast to look at her hands. "We'll still be able to hang out, right? It won't be strange?"

Still trying to appear understanding about the situation, he turned away from her and nodded lightly, as though he acceptd her reasoning. But inside, he was a mess, all sorts of ideas running around going from improbable to sheerly ridiculous. Did she fancy that greasy git? Was she chasing after some other boys? Did she already secretly have a relationship with anyone? Was she shagging in the back of the library during evenings?

With another release of breath, this one a lot less stable and more shaky, he spoke barely loud enough for even himself to hear. "Yeah... sure."

"James..." This time she did reach out, placing a hand on his shoulder. She gave it a squeeze, before letting it drop. He probably didn't want to be around her at all, let alone talk about future times to hang out. Did she really expect that to happen? Wishful thinking on her part.

"I didn't mean to hurt you," she said, moving away from him on the couch. This was going to be an interesting meeting. Hopefully he could get his mind off of what just happened with plans on how to figure out these Death Eaters. She wanted to say more, to reassure him, to get him to smile. But everything she could think of would come out stupid and just make things worse. Instead, she just propped her head up with her hand and stared at nothing in particular in front of her. Hopefully someone else would show up and soon.

Molly wandered into the Defense meeting a few minutes early, as was her fashion, hoping to get a decent seat that was still far enough away from Potter and Black that she didn't run the risk of accidental spell damage.

She wasn't surprised that Lily was already here, but she was surprised by the tension she could feel hovering in the room. Lily looked awkward and nervous, and Potter looked... Upset? Couldn't be.

Molly went over and sat by her friend, wondering what on earth had gotten into the couple. Maybe something she'd said last night actually sunk in? She was a little surprised that, while part of her was relieved, the other part felt a little guilty. If nothing else, James and Lily had been adorable.

"Ready?" She asked Lily brightly, hoping to calm the situation a little.

Lily felt a rush of relief as Molly came into the room. At least it would keep her from glancing over at James, hoping to catch his eye and create a new conversation, to take back everything she had said. No, with Molly here, she knew it was the right decision. It was hard now, but in the long run, it was going to be for the best. She was sure...

"Hey," she said, trying to give her friend a genuine smile. "I think we're just waiting for a few other people and then we'll be able to start." She couldn't help but glance over at James again, to see if he would reassure what she said.

"Are you alright?" Molly asked her friend quietly. "Potter didn't do something stupid, did he?" She was fully prepared to go over and hex him if that was the case.

Lily smiled, shaking her head. "No, it was me," she said. "After our conversation, I kind of thought it would be best to talk to him about it. Where we stood and everything. That maybe we take it a little slower." She looked over at James, walking over to sit by Peter. "He didn't really take to it. Which I don't blame him. I kind of attacked him with it." She shook her head, leaning her head against Molly's shoulder. Why did it all have to be complicated?

Molly glanced over at James again, a little surprised. Sure she knew he liked her friend, but he wasn't already that attached was he? Was it possible that this was more than just a passing fancy to the boy?

"You did the right thing Lily. It isn't like you told him you never want to see him again. Just give it time."

Lily just nodded her head, not really saying anything. She knew it was true, but part of her worried that James would let this get to him. What if he really took this to heart and it changed the whole situation? She didn't like how worried she felt that he might even change his mind on how he felt for her.

Just give it time. She would give herself a day before she broke down to talk to him again. No, no that was ridiculous, two days. And then she would just say hi. Nothing else. Just hi.

"I hope the meeting doesn't take long," she said, her voice lowered. "I suddenly just want to go back up to the dormitory."

The Portrait had opened, admitting Peter to the Gryffindor common room, eyes shifting along the room, over James and Lily to Molly. He moved off to one of the tables in the corner, where he had played Wizards Chess with his mates on better days. Tugging his bag off, he dropped it onto the wood top, and began to look inside, rummaging through quills, bottles of ink and scrolls of parchment until he found his wand laying at the very bottom.

James and Lily...it looked like they had been talking. About what, Peter could only guess, although from their expressions it was not good.

He gave a slight shake of his head. It was all a bit too much as of late, with all that he had heard about the incident at the ball, and now all the rumors about Death Eaters and this...

He kept to himself for the moment, choosing to leave his bag behind, and moved closer to the fire where he dropped down in one of the shabby, comfy chairs, tapping his wand against the arm rest.

The Defense Club would be starting soon, no doubt. Peter had come for that, he just did not want to worry about things anymore.

When Peter showed up, James latched onto the new situation with a fervour, standing from his seat and instead joining Peter opposite his. He avoided Lily's eyes as best as he could, having caught a bit of her conversation with Molly. The latter of the two girls didn't seem to like him much, nor did James really care, but he couldn't get past the feeling that perhaps she'd had something to do with Lily's little 'chat' which took him off guard.

Feeling a wave of resentment at his assumptions, he turned to Peter and plastered on his best jovial expression. No reason to get down about things when he could get his mind on other topics. "So Pete, have you seen Moony or Padfoot? Soon as those sods show up, we can start. Or I s'pose we could just go on without them. What d'you reckon?"

It wasn't like James to be indecisive. In this instance, he was just trying to focus more attention on his quieter friend, hoping that the boy would pipe up with his opinion and give James something else to think about. Anything but Lily. It was perhaps a selfish move that James couldn't be arsed to think deeply about. He just needed a distraction so that he'd be in his best form for the meeting.

The presence of his friend was something like a surprise, however Peter still gave his usual slight, shy smile as James dropped into a seat upside him.

It was something that slipped slightly, as his eyebrows rose, surprise flickering through his eyes. It was not usual that James would ask Peter's opinion like this, it usually would have been the other way around. Or one of the other boys to be question.

It felt strangely nice, he found.

"I think we should wait," Peter said, in his squeaky voice. "Moony will be able to help keep track of things, and I'm sure he'd know some nifty spells..."

Sirius was another matter.

Forcing a wider smile, he reached out and clapped James on the shoulder, sitting upright in the chair. "Sure Sirius wouldn't want to miss out either."

Glad that Peter at least wasn't looking at him in a sad way, or telling him ridiculous things, or making the whole bloody world come falling down, James smiled and sat up, tugging his mate along with.

"All right you tossers, let's get this show on the road! Time for the meeting!" There weren't that many people gathered in the common room yet but he figured it was now or never.

James headed for the middle of the common room to make sure he was good and heard, looking around him at those who started gathering. "C'mon, no time to lose! Did you see what the bloody hell's been going on out there, or am I the only one with some sense?"

Peter couldn't help the way his grin widened as James pulled him up from the chair and alongside him to the center of the room. Things had been incredibly troubling during this week, and it was honestly a relief to just...be.

Even if they were at a Defense meeting to do something to combat the rumors and the threat that came with it.

It was why he grinned so stupidly; Peter was embarrassed and relief, both. James was speaking, and Peter tilted his head back slightly, watching even as a few fellow Gryffindor's moved closer to the center of the room, to where James stood.

There were murmurs of agreement, whispers echoing between those that had signed the piece of parchment last time James had called attention to the common room.

"I'm sure it's safe to say everyone knows whats happening, and that something needs to be done..." Peter said, choosing now to stay by James' side, to offer some sort of reassurance where Sirius usually would have. He had not turned up it seemed, and that left a nagging in the back of his mind.

"But what can we do, James?"

Sirius sauntered into the room with a smirk on his face and a spring in his step.

"Hello there Gryffindorks." He sent a lacivious smile over to Molly and Lily, then made his way to the front of the classroom.

"I know, I know, you're all overawed by my presence, and I honestly can't say I blame you. I amaze myself on a daily basis. But I think it's time you children faced a few facts!" He jumped up on one of the desks and surveyed the room. "What is this? Defense Club? Honestly, this might just be the saddest collection of human beings I have ever seen. We have the Fearless Leader," he turned to James with a sneer. "Who's head is so far up his own ass that he can't even see that this fight is already lost. We've got the desperate, whiny loser clinging vainly to his coat tails," he tipped his hat to Peter. "The fat, shrewish bitch who can't keep her nose out of other peoples business," he winked at Molly, "and who else. Who am I missing... Oh yes, the mudblood slut who's running two men through their paces on a daily basis. Really, I'm terrified. You lot are going to change the world."

Peter was bewildered.

He stood staring at Sirius, eyes wide, his confusion written plainly across his pale features. It was just...hurtful, to have a long time friend come and just say such things.

"Sirius..." He had shifted in place, turning his eyes upon the other Wizard. He glanced towards James, and then Lily, and back to Sirius.

"You're b--being rude, calling Lily that...and acting this way. You should apologize..."

Glad for the words that Peter spoke up, he started to pat him on the back before the rather rude interruption by Sirius, whom they had all been awaiting. As the Gryffindors gathered about took stock of Sirius's words and many looked affronted, James felt his eyebrows lowering in what had to be a combination of annoyance and disgust.

He had to remind himself that Sirius hadn't been acting normally for the last few days, and after he reassured himself that he wouldn't try to punch him again, he sauntered over to Sirius and tugged hard on his arm, putting enough force into the pull to make sure that he and his errant friend were face to face.

"Padfoot," he whispered, hoping that using his nickname might spark some sense in the other boy, "you're not yourself right now. Shouldn't we go up to the dorm and let you rest it off?" It was a question, but not necessarily an option as far as James was concerned.

He tossed an apologetic look around to his friends, hoping that they wouldn't get too upset with Sirius's behaviour. Some of them had already experienced the erratic change in his dorm-mate, but others might be new to the experience.

Sirius sneered at James, shrugging himself out of his grip.

"Fuck off Potter. Keep your filthy blood traitor hands to yourself." He surveyed the room, then began sauntering toward the door.

"Have fun in your little meeting kids. Make sure to practice your sheild charms and the jelly legs jinx! Who knows, you might ever be able to make someone fall down before they kill you!"

James couldn't believe what he was hearing. It wasn't like he didn't expect it, but to actually hear it was a different story. He felt himself gaping at Sirius, disbelief and hurt written all over his face. He quickly covered it up with an angry expression at the vile things that he was saying. Before he could stop himself, he gave in to his anger and yelled out after Sirius:

"Get on then, before I hex your dumb arse!" With a barely contained growl, he turned back to the Gryffindors gathered about, passing them all a hot look.

"Just forget his buggering arse. He's being a prat. This isn't about stupid hexes that won't do anything serious," he insisted. "I mean real spells, defensive magic that won't just trip someone up, but keep them immobilised or disarm them. That's the real trick." James felt himself brightening in mood as he spoke, tackling an area that he knew how to handle.
