Who: Lucius & Narcissa
What: The Confrontation
When: Two days after her journal note
Where: Potions classroom
Rating: PG
Status: Complete

Narcissa really shouldn't have been surprised when Lucius didn't respond to her journal entry until two days after she had written it. Still, she had stood in that classroom, waiting for him, her anger only growing. Not only had he so obviously slandered her good name, but then he pretended he had no idea what she was upset about. He's a slimy, cocky git who uses his looks to disspell everything negative about himself. Narcissa had brooded and tried to think every negative thought against him. She knew that once she saw him in person, he would use his wiles on her to try and disarm her. Well it wasn't going to work this time.

When she had finally gotten a hold of him, she was only going to wait so long and if he didn't come, she would root him out and it wouldn't be pretty. She was back in the same deserted Potion's classroom, brewing a calming drought. She had a feeling she might need it later and the complex process put her mind at ease. There was something about potion brewing that calmed Narcissa and that was what she needed when she saw Lucius. Part of her wanted to fly off the handle at him, letting him have what he deserved. The other part told her she needed to be rational and treat the situation as a lady should. There was nothing formal between the two and Lucius probably would like to see that jealous streak in her. She wanted to try and not give him that satisfaction.

She couldn't help but think of the short conversation she had had with Sirius. It was strange to have such a civil one with him, but it was even more surprising to have him warn her against him. To say that he didn't want her to be hurt? What had happened between the two to make Sirius break down like that? She frowned, her concentration broken for a split second, causing her to stir one too many times. Cursing, she threw down her wand and sat on a desk. Why did he have this effect on her? She was suppose to be the one who drove men wild, she was the one who was suppose to be in the power. She hated how he did this to her, but hated herself more for allowing it.

It had taken some time for him to respond to Narcissa, but it was all part of his strategy. He was always plotting and working through scenarios in his mind for all sorts of encounters and circumstances. When it came to Narcissa, it only seemed right to test her, to see how truly attached she was. Only the very devoted would make it past his barriers for a peek inside the real Lucius Malfoy. He had learned a very long time ago that people were perfect pawns in his game and he was the epitome of a perfect chess master. His money, family reputation, and blood lineage were all working in his favour to make him one of the most pompous members of pureblood society, and he knew that he was desired by most of the witches who were seeking a good match. The topic of marriage had been broached several times by his father, to which Lucius responded with a nonchalant and noncommittal attitude, always stating that he would be married in his own time. It was never a matter of if, but of when, and to whom. Nothing but the best trophy wife would be acceptable.

The Malfoys had always been chauvinists with regard to their wives. The Malfoy women were treated exceptionally, but they were never fully equal to their husbands where family and business affairs were concerned. They ran the household and the social aspects, while the men ran the wealth and the family's various societal connections. It had always worked, and Lucius needed no less than that for himself. He had never found an acceptable match that rivalled him in wit and good looks, not to mention sharpness of character and strength of convictions. None but one. His eye had fallen on her and he had started his game, but would she keep up?

When Narcissa asked — more like demanded — for him to join her, he had half a mind to let her wait for him as long as she was willing to. But then, common sense kicked in past the vanity and he thought more on it, smiling to himself when he had decided to play her game and even toss in a little more of himself into it. The owl arrived with the neatly wrapped parcel during lunch, an urgency to its flapping wings that denoted how quick the sender was to answer his request. The Malfoys had always been excellent customers and the last thing that the establishment needed was to cause any delay with such a purchase.

Just after classes and the typical socialising in the Slytherin common room, Lucius lazily made his way out of the dungeons with parcel under his arm, robes discarded on his four poster and flattering emerald vest hugging his chest. The dress shirt was a soft linen whose thread count was unimaginable, but only the best was suitable for a Malfoy.

The Potions classroom was easy enough to find for someone who had an affinity for the subject. He was not nearly as devout as his friend Severus, but he knew enough to do well and to catch the interest of his Head of House [among other accomplishments, naturally]. Sauntering in as though he owned the place, he stopped in the doorway and just watched her for a moment, letting his eyes roam over her relatively unhappy expression. He mentally gave a little laugh at knowing that he was likely the cause of it, before entering and making his presence known.

"Why Miss Black, I didn't think you so dedicated to the art of Potions. Does Severus know what a wonderful student you are?" The drawl on his tongue infused his words with ease, infuriating to many yet so fitting on such a man.

With a wave of her wand, the potion she had been working on vanished from the cauldron, as if she had never started it. She looked over at him, giving him a cool glance. His arrival was quick enough, although she was sure he had taken his own time to keep her waiting just a little bit more. Remember, you are the queen in this game. The queen moves around the board freely while the king has to just sit there and allow others to serve him.

"I am thanks to him," she said. "But I've always had a passion for potions. Something soothing in the process." With her mess cleaned up, it allowed her to have full focus on Lucius Malfoy. She wasn't sure if that was a good or bad thing. She wanted to give him her full attention, but didn't want to subject herself to his mannerisms. He was a cunning bugger, aptly put in the Slytherin house. Still, she had to keep on her toes to keep up with this one.

Marriage was always at the forefront of Narcissa's mind. It seemed Bella would not settle down, no matter how she or her father pressed the urgency to her. Narcissa knew that their family needed to marry into a good family, to uphold the strong pureblood linage. How else were the true inheritors of the wizarding world going to continue to flourish? Certainly Bella had to know, even with her strong devotion to the Dark Lord. Still, she was saving herself for his will, if he ever so chose her. Narcissa was highly doubtful, but remained silent for her sisters sake. The pressure of the Black family rested on her shoulders and she knew she had to make the right match. Who better than Lucius Malfoy? He was handsome, rich, and had a strong pureblood background. All the key components to a good marriage. But there was something else there as well, something Narcissa didn't even want to admit to herself. She was falling for him.

She couldn't say what it was about Lucius Malfoy that made her feel so in love. It certainly wasn't his love for her. No, there was something else, some kind of connection that she felt with him. It only upset her more to think she was the only one who felt it. She was happy to carry on the family line by marrying whomever her father thought suitable, but the romantic side hoped to marry someone she loved. After her little run in with Lucius in the common room, she had begun to hope there might be something there, just a little sense of the feeling returned. After reports of the dance however, she was beginning to feel like a fool for believing she was any different from how Lucius saw Sirius Black and that infuriated her.

"I'm sure you know why I asked you down here," she said, watching him intently. "And no, not to have a little fun or discuss "intimate" matters. I want answers and I want them straight forward." Her blue eyes burned into his grey ones, wishing she had the same abilities as Severus. She just wanted him to be straight forward, to tell her the truth. She didn't want little tidbits here or there or to be strung along like a little child. She wanted to be treated as his equal.

"You seek answers, do you?" he asked lightly, leisurely strolling into the classroom and leaning against a table a little ways away from her. He'd noticed the seriousness in her eyes — such a brilliant blue that he felt as though he could take a dip in the welcoming waters — and felt himself drawn in. Lucius didn't let himself trip completely, though, just enough for a convincing show so that she would maintain her interest. But even beyond that, he had to actively deny that there was anything else behind the game.

Setting the parcel next to him in plain view, he addressed her with a warm smile, oozing his best charm and ease. "I could give you some interesting answers if you wanted me to, Narcissa Black. All you need to do is ask the right questions."

"I seek true answers, not interesting ones," she said, her eyes drifting to the package he had sat down next to him. It registered but for a moment before her eyes were back on his. Focus. She studied him for a moment and she moved to stand across from him, herself leaning against a desk. Her arms were folded across her chest, her position in a defensive mode. All you need to do is ask the right questions.

"Did you have fun at the ball?" she asked, her right eyebrow raised. "And afterwards?"

Watching her movements carefully as she came closer, he allowed his face to be more open, inviting her in to test his words and see if she could withstand the game that he was playing with her. Lucius had no intentions of revealing himself just yet; she needed to earn it, and right now, she was skirting the line of provocation. It would lead her astray eventually, but Lucius obliged and played along, idling running his fingers over the parcel's wrappings beside him as he leaned a bit more forward, steel eyes meeting ice.

"You surprise me with your lack of venture. Have you no interest in games? I do so love a good game, particularly when the players are so easy to manipulate." The players being the likes of Sirius and other lesser names, but he chose to leave that distinction silent.

"Should I instead ask if you enjoyed yourself? I know how much you enjoy the company of our mutual friend. Was he obliging? Charming? Did he make sporting conversation?" The hint of sarcasm crept into his tone as he looked all too satisfied with himself. As he leaned, the top of his dress shirt opened just a bit, revealing a well-muscled chest. Lucius was never above using his looks and body language to distract.

Why was she not surprised that he combated her question with one of his own? He seemed to be very good with that technique, but she wouldn't let it fool her any longer. She would play his game, but she would remember that it was just that; a game. She smiled sweetly back at him, only giving a small shrug of the shoulders. "Perhaps it's a game I've tried but found no taste in. I would rather take control of it and change the rules as I please."

She pushed herself up on the desk so she was sitting, her legs dangling down. "I actually did enjoy Severus' company. He was kind enough to come out with me and I think we can both agree he is not a social person. He kept me well entertained and was a complete gentleman. I couldn't have asked for a better date." She smiled sweetly at him, knowing it was true. How silly she had been to think she wanted Lucius to ask her to the dance. She could now see that every agenda only fit his and he would willingly ruin a girls night for his own pleasure. Her heart still went out for Alecto, even if she had been sorely jealous before.

"But again, I ask if you enjoyed yourself that evening? I believe you asked Alecto to go, but it was not her you left with." There was a steely glint in her eyes as she said it. He had to know it was no secret what he had done that night. If he had truly wanted to keep it under wraps he would have found a better way. No, there was a reason and Narcissa was determined to find out.

Her eyes alighted to his shirt, almost as easily as he had their first meeting int he common room. She couldn't deny his rather fit body and the want to run her hand across his chest. Well, more like scratch her nails down the front, but it was the same idea. Well two could play at that game. She crossed her legs, causing her skirt to inch up her thigh. She tossed her hair back from her shoulder, showing she was wearing the same outfit as when they had met. It was her lounging time, no tie or sweater to make her uncomfortable. Just a nice button up dress shirt, the buttons opened to expose just enough to tantalize.

Lucius allowed the smirk to cross over his lips at her words and subsequent actions. He'd caught her eyes travelling to his well-defined chest, just as his own gaze held on her exposed thigh. No, he wouldn't let himself fall into the same trap as their last close encounter. The hand that stroked the parcel beside him lifted it up and he began to actively tuck fingers into the wrapping, getting more involved in making it painfully obvious that he wanted her to see it, although not opening it till she would say so or do it herself.

"My business in that regard is my own, I'm afraid. There were... matters to attend to," emphasising the word 'matters' with a punctuated lift of a brow and a very slow stalk closer to where she sat. They were just a metre apart now, close enough to reach out and touch one another if either broke the battle of wills that they were actively engaged in. Lucius leaned against the same table upon which she sat and placed the parcel between them, swooping in that much closer until he could almost feel her breath.

"But I am glad that Severus was such a pleasant date. I would never have thought him capable of wooing a lady, much less being a charitable sort to take a lady out who obviously had her hopes on another." Steely eyes started to smoulder with his closeness, but he wouldn't give in. He had to see this game through till the end. The shirt opened a bit more, revealing the curve of a toned pectoral.

Narcissa didn't dare hope that the parcel he continued to play with could be meant for her. She had hoped he would bring a gift to make up for his actions, but that was just a wishful fantasy. Or was it? She watched as he walked closer to her, the package between the two as she gazed up at him.

"It must have been very important reasons then," she said, nodding her head slightly, her eyes never leaving his. "It isn't every night the Head Boy sneaks off to have a tumble with a blood traitor." She sneered at the last part, her derision broken for a moment. Of all the things that had happened between the two of them, this was the thing that hurt the most. How could he have betrayed her like this? Sirius was an obvious insult not only to herself, but to her whole family. What was he trying to say when he took it upon himself to bed the damn fellow? She finally dropped her eyes, breaking the gaze that was so intent, looking down at her lap.

"How could you Lucius?" she asked, her voice just above a whisper. "I thought...I thought that..." She couldn't finish the sentence for fear she would really make a fool out of herself now. What had she thought? That he might return the feelings she had for him? That there was a possibility of something happening between the two of them? That was silly. The only interaction they had had the whole year was the playful bit in the common room. She was beginning to see that it was probably a game he played with many students. There was nothing special about her.

She shifted on the desk, leaning forward with her own smirk on her face. "Severus is indeed a gentleman and I'm happy to have gone with him. I had hopes another would ask me, but now I can see it would have been a mistake." Again, her cold eyes flashed to his, not before looking again at the opening in his shirt. Dear Salazar, must he be so desirable?

Hearing her let the feelings she had on the matter slip, Lucius was starting to get a clearer picture of the disappointment that she must have felt when he opted to attend the ball with Alecto and not herself. He had his agenda to cater to and he had thought of little else; as usual, his needs came before another's, but surely if she knew the magnitude of the situation, she would understand. This was not the first instance in which he wanted to let her in on the truth, but as before, he knew that now was not the right time nor the correct place to do so. If it ever arrived, he would make sure to properly prepare her and give her every opportunity to feel comfortable. He was starting to realise that beyond the game, Narcissa Black meant more to him than a pawn to be used.

Lowering his gaze to the parcel so that he would not reveal an iota of his thoughts, he lifted himself with a deft hop so that he was beside her. Their bodies were facing the opposite direction, yet he twisted his torso slightly toward her to get a full view of her exquisite features. He then reached out for one of her hands and wrapped it lightly in his own, bringing their joined hands atop the parcel.

"My apologies for leading you astray, then, Narcissa. I do hope that you will consider this a token of my regard for you?" His voice was so low and silken that he may as well have been purring. Lucius was entirely too tempted to lean in for a kiss as he gazed at her, trying to gauge her reaction.

If only she had known the true meaning behind his actions, she would have been more supportive. Sure, she would have argued against using Sirius, but she would have known why he had to do what he needed. While she was not so called to become a follower of this dark lord, she completely believed in what he stood for. Her sister was one of his most devote followers and she was proud of her for doing such. She had a notion that Lucius may have been involved himself, but she had no idea the depth in which he was in.

For a split second, Narcissa Black was completely taken aback. Her heart thumped in her chest as he took her hand in his to set on top of the parcel. Her eyes seemed stuck on their hands together, interlacing on the present he had brought her. It felt so nice, so...right. Could he sense it too? Her eyes traveled up to his, so close and clear. She had always marveled at his grey eyes, so cold and cunning, but beautiful. They were locked together in but a brief moment when she felt anything could happen. She almost had the silly thought that they would kiss, but lowered her gaze before. She had already come out as vulnerable, an aspect she did not want Lucius Malfoy knowing or using against her. She was a Black and members of the Black family were strong.

"What is it?" she asked, her hand sweeping across the rough parchment paper that encased it. While the feeling may have been tough, the present itself was beautiful. It was of a lavender color with a logo embossed in a darker purple. She wanted to open it and see what he may have brought her as a remission gift, but she was loathe to pull her hand from his. One of her fingers slid out to break a piece of tape from the parcel and she hoped to get a glimpse of what was inside.

Before he could lean any closer and give in to his desires, he looked down at their joined hands and removed his at her question, watching as she started to open the parcel. Blishwick & Sons always made the finest pieces as far as Wizarding jewellry went, and this was no exception. Upon opening the lavender wrapping, she would see a beautiful platinum choker, set with large emeralds and finished with delicately carved fleur de lis ornaments. It seemed to fit her quite well, as did it blend nicely with her nearly regal Black heritage.

"Only one way to find out," he quipped. Lucius observed her face with interest, wondering if she might forget that she was frustrated with him and simply focus on the gift that he so easily handed over without a second thought. If nothing else could be said for him, he knew when to oil the gears so that they ran smoothly and in his favour. In this instance, he wanted Narcissa to forgive his 'escapade' and to understand that he was more than able to lavish her with gifts if she were willing to accept a sort of truce for the time being. He still did not allow himself to think on where this left them; for the time being, he was content to allow himself this moment without concern for the future.

"What do you think of it, Narcissa?" he asked lightly, offering a genuine smile that he allowed to touch his softening grey eyes. Even he didn't realise how much he wanted her to forgive him.

Narcissa was astonished as she pulled the necklace from it's wrapping. It was breath taking. She had all sorts of baubles and trinkets to choose from, but this was probably one of the best pieces to her collection now. It was too fancy for every day wear and she was upset that there would be no more balls in the near future for her to show it off. Still, she held it up and turned to him, a smile on her face. "What do you think?" she asked. Before she could get an answer she jumped off of the desk and hurried over to a looking glass set on a back counter. It looked stunning. The emeralds had a great luster to them and the details were amazing.

She turned back to Lucius and gave him a genuine smile. While there was still a little bit of heat from what had happened, she was beginning to hope once more, despite her better judgement. "I love it," she said, walking back over and setting the necklace back into the wrapping. "It's so beautiful, I cannot wait to find a good occasion to wear it to." She tucked it back away and looked up at Lucius, allowing herself to think about the implications of the gift. It was certainly not an inexpensive gift, surely he meant it in a form of forgiveness? But could she forgive him for what he had done? She certainly didn't want to give the gift back.

She looked from him to the necklace and back again. "I cannot forgive you Lucius," she said slowly, not wanting to anger him after such a lovely gift. "Even with this wonderful gift you've given me. This has to do with honour to my family." Surely he would understand that. She looked up at him again, her eyes almost pleading. "You cannot tell me what it was for? Or if it was for business or...pleasure?" She shuddered to think it was the later.

At her seemingly ecstatic reaction, Lucius allowed himself a bit of self-satisfaction, watching her admire the gift and even looking quite grateful for it. It was when she said her last piece that he felt his blood start to run cold and his eyes almost narrowed watching her. However, getting a firm grip on himself, he lightly hopped from the table and turned to face her, hands reaching for hers before ever so lightly running up her arms as he captured her gaze with his own.

"Why Narcissa, I am quite glad that you enjoy my gift. Surely there may be future occasions that will allow you to wear it; I wouldn't worry myself about that." He leaned in closer as his hands ran along the fabric of her sleeves and reached the inside of her elbows, where he lingered while gazing intently.

Lucius was quite proficient with Imperius, but as he didn't want to look suspicious, nor did he want to have to reach for his wand, he leaned down and almost touched his nose to hers, allowing his mind to open hers with his fairly proficient Legilimency. His father had insisted that he learn it as well as Occlumency; at the time, what seemed like a chore was now a very useful tool.

"You should know that I had no thoughts of pleasure. Very much unlike right now, Narcissa," his voice purred while his hands ran up her biceps and landed on her shoulders. His mind projected a sense of relaxation and ease into hers, hoping that the combined sensations would tempt her to voice her forgiveness. When his hands reached the base of her neck, he allowed the tips of his fingers to run lightly until they reached her collar bones. Greys locked onto blues for another second before he leaned down and caught her lips up in a kiss spiked with cool electricity.

Narcissa had been looking at her marvelous gift when Lucius' true feelings flashed in his eyes. When she looked up at him, they had disappeared to his usual cool grey and she watched as he walked around to stand in front of her. She was unsure how he would take what she said; things had been going so well that she didn't want to mess up with him. But she also wanted to be honest with him. She was beginning to realize that she didn't just want him to want her because of her title, looks, or money. She wanted him to want all of her.

He surprised her once again as he took her hands, his own traveling up and down her arms. It made her shiver and she looked up into his eyes. They were so beautiful. She felt like he usually had them guarded, but now, she could see the truth. The tension and apprehension she felt all melted away as he said the words she had been hoping for. ...no thoughts of pleasure... Everything blurred as he leaned in forward and before she could do anything, he was kissing her. She didn't know what to do at first, she just stood there, enjoying the feel of their lips together.

It was everything she had hoped it would be. It felt special, not just a sloppy kiss in passing. His lips were cool and soft, not moist or hesitant. Narcissa found herself wrapping her arms around his neck, pulling him in a little more. She didn't want it to end, but there were still loose ends. She pulled herself away, using all her strength to do so. She put her hands on his chest, her eyes raising to look at him.

"So what does this mean?" she asked softly. "Are you kissing me just to make things better? Or is there...something more?" Her heart was thumping against her chest and she could swear he would be able to hear it. "I...I fancy you Lucius. A lot. And it didn't just hurt my pride that you didn't ask me to the ball or that you seemingly ignore me. It hurt because I care." She stopped herself before she could say more, but realized she had definitely said more then she wanted. She never wore her heart on her sleeve like this. It was too easy for someone to take it and stomp on it or manipulate it at their will. Of all the people to confide in, she chose Lucius? She glanced down and pushed herself away, shaking her head. What had she done?

Although Lucius kept his cool façade even after Narcissa had broken the kiss, he felt himself drawn in to what she had been saying. For the most part, he'd taken it all as a game without any real goals nor foreseeable consequences. And then she had to go and say what she did, which suddenly made this more real than it had been. Not that Lucius wasn't expecting her to open up after he'd subtly invaded her mind, but perhaps he was hoping that she would take a different angle and just give in to his wiles, not pour out her emotions. Lucius didn't do emotions.

"It means," he began, voice low and hands covering hers on his chest, thumbs running ever so lightly against hers while he smiled slowly, passing his tongue over his lips to catch the flavour of her, "that you have obvious feelings for me, which may complicate matters." The coldness within himself was shining through, although he didn't want to simply leave it at that; he wanted to leave himself an opening for later, should he wish to revisit the possibilities with Narcissa. She was certainly an eligible witch for his plans, after all. All emotional attachments were pushed aside to a part of his mind that he forced himself not to visit.

"That is not to say that I don't appreciate your feelings, Narcissa; please do not mistake me. Given the general atmosphere around the school and outside of Hogwarts walls, surely you can understand how things will have to proceed at a slower pace." It wasn't a question, merely a statement which Lucius took to be fact. He tried to inject a bit of warmth to his words beneath the drawl, hoping that he was playing a convincing role.

It was as she had expected, but she still couldn't help but feel vulnerable and hurt. She was sure her expression showed everything and she hated that. Weakness was not something she took pride in and she was showing it to the one man she wanted to keep it from.

"So you've known this whole time?" she asked, her eyes still downcast. "That I've fancied you?" She pulled her hand from his, not wanting his pity. If he was going to reject her, then she would accept it. He spoke of future possibilities, but those would all be based on her parents decisions. There was no attraction on his point and she would have to deal with that, get over it. Well, she had done it before. She could do it again. Right? At the moment she felt like she wanted to crawl into bed and not get out for awhile. She was more embarrassed than anything. What possessed me to say all of that?

The worst part was she could only hear Potter's words in her head. He doesn't even know you exist. While that certainly wasn't true, he had a point. Everything Lucius regarded in his life was if it would benefit him. She certainly did not fit into that grouping.

She almost laughed at what he said. Not to say I don't appreciate your feelings. Well that was certainly something wasn't it? She shook her head and moved herself off the desk, brushing past Lucius. "I'm sorry to have bothered you today," she said, her voice cool and quiet as she tried to regain control of herself and her thoughts. "Your life is your own and I apologize for trying to push my way into it. I promise you, it won't happen again."

He took it all in while maintaining his cool demeanour, wondering at how this turn of events had unfolded. Must brush up on my Legilimency, he thought to himself, rather aghast that it hadn't worked out quite as planned. Sure, she had finally openly admitted her feelings regarding him, but to see this turn in demeanour was not acceptable for his future plans. He would have to make sure to change things accordingly if he wished to succeed.

On that note, he turned to watch her as she'd passed by him, shooting out a hand to hold onto her arm for a minute, wanting to make himself very clear. "Narcissa, you have to understand me. Now is not the best time to be pursuing one's inclinations, no matter the clarity of one's emotions and desires. Someday soon, you will have to realise that." The cryptic words left his lips in a hushed tone, all seriousness laced in between each word. Lucius meant to make a point, but he thought it may not be understood as he intended. As he considered it further, he released her arm to brush past her as she'd done to him, making certain to graze her shoulder as he went

With a quick turn of the head, he added a parting thought: "If it makes you feel like less of a fool, I nearly confessed something which you may have longed to hear." At that, he swiftly left the Potions classroom, buttoning up his dress shirt and narrowing his gaze. Upon spotting a stray young Slytherin trying to sneak back toward the common room, he snarled a warning and pushed past, heading toward the decanter of brandy that he'd kept for such occasions.

Narcissa braced herself as she felt Lucius grab to stop her. She wouldn't shy away from him anymore; she wanted to show him she was strong, that she would overcome this. She looked up at him, the slightest spark of hope returning. No! You mustn't feel this way. It will only lead to disappointment over and over again. She had a feeling he was apart of this new group that followed a dark lord, the same that Bella had recently hinted about. Still, what could make someone hesitate towards something they wanted? If the feelings weren't there to overcome it, certainly it meant he would put something else above her.

When he let go, she couldn't help but feel a sense of sorrow at the loss of contact. It may have been the last physical caress she would receive from him and it was enough to make her sigh. She had thought he had left, watching as he went towards the door, yet he stopped. She blinked as he said the words, yet he was gone as swiftly as he had said it. What was it he wished to confess? But more importantly, why couldn't he? Narcissa felt a strange tightening around her heart and she took a deep breath, closing her eyes. Strength. If he wishes you to be nothing, you can be just that to him. Somehow she knew it was going to be easier said than done.

She picked up her potions book and tucked it under her arm before she exited as well, not so much as looking back in the room, but forward towards something new.
