We should forgive our enemies, but not before they are hanged.

The weekend Rodolphus had anticipated with his brother had not gone anywhere near what he had planned. That wasn't to say he had actually planned anything to begin with but he certainly hadn't anticipated Amycus being brought into the thick of things. He got along with the male Carrow well enough when it was just the two of them together but whenever Rabastan was added to the equation Amycus turned into an entirely different person. It was almost like Rabastan was Amycus' brother instead of his own and he couldn't fathom what it was about Amycus' personality that forced him to cling to siblings so fiercely.

It wasn't like he had planned to lure Rabastan home to murder him or anything. It wasn't like he hated the little bugger. He just wanted to toughen him up, to help turn him into the wizard he knew Rabastan was capable of. He'd seen his wand work, watched as he learned all manner of Dark Magic to impress him and although he'd never admit it, Rodolphus was impressed.

But that was beside the point, it was all beside the point. Amycus was the problem. Amycus was the one who had wedged himself into his life and then set off to have dinner with the woman Rodolphus planned to marry. The boast before a hasty exit still left him feeling sour and violent and proved to him that nothing about his relationship with Amycus was friendly any longer. He felt like an idiot for believing it in the first place, not that he truly cared about Amycus or their friendship, but he had been convinced it was real for at least one of them.

Now that both his parents were home, once Rabastan was in and Alecto had retired to her room for the evening, Rodolphus, out of sheer bitterness, prowled the house moving from door to door setting traps for Amycus whenever the little backstabber decided to return. He was going to see Bellatrix? He was going over to her house for dinner? Well the moment he stepped in through any of the doors upon his return he'd know the true meaning of en flambe once his clothes started on fire.

Maybe if Amycus begged he'd be benevolent enough to put him out.

Rodolphus made himself a glass of water, he just didn't have a taste for anything else. After taking a drink he held the cup out to Rabastan in case he wanted a drink as well. "Well there were witnesses there. Let's see - Evans, Potter, Snape, Bellatrix, Sirius, myself. Narcissa and Avery were there too but I don't think they followed after I chased Evans down."

It really would be a shame if he was sent to Azkaban over something that had been such a colossal screw up on his part. What he'd been able to do to impress Bellatrix until that point, mainly murdering that Muggle family, had all been lost when he hadn't been able to drag Evans back and dump her at Bellatrix's feet.

He scowled at his own thoughts.

Rabastan thought he might pass out. Rodolphus had, he had really done it. He had really kidnapped and tortured sweet Lily Evans, because she was muggleborn.

Oh Merlin. Is this what the Death Eaters are?

He took the cup, filled it absently, and drained it in one gulp.

"W-what a-are you g-going to d-d-d-do?"

He watched passively as Rabastan took the glass and downed it as if it were the only drink he'd had in days and refused to answer his question as he stared him down in silence. Casually, he tapped a finger against the counter top near the sink. Rabastan was usually mousey and quiet but this was a little bit different. His stammer was much worse.

Reaching out he flicked his finger against his forehead between the eyes. "What are you so afraid of?" he asked in a low tone born purely out of suspicion. "Oh, that's right. You were just aghast at what had happened to poor little Evans, weren't you? Fancy her, do you? Please tell me yes and your concern isn't born from a misplaced notion of Muggleborn rights."

"W-w-w-what!" Rabastan shook his head quickly. "N-no, I d-don't f-fancy her. I-I-I-I-I," he had to pause for breath. "I don't c-c-care about m-muggleborns, I-I m-mean mudb-blood Rodolphus. Y-You k-now that."

He clutched the glass in his hand, hoping Rodolphus couldn't see right through him. This was the sort of thing he was going to have to prove if he wanted to be a Death Eater. He took a deep breath, and forced himself to speak past his stammer.

"I'm just w-worried about you. I don't want you to go to A-Azkaban."

"Please." Rodolphus easily brushed him off, or at least the claim he was trying so desperately to make. "I read your journal entry. You know the one you tried to make private but everyone else seemed to be able to see without any difficulties? I read that."

He pushed himself away from the kitchen counter and stepped towards his brother. "You should know some things," he told him, pushing up the sleeve on his forearm and extending the pale limb, marked with the symbol all Death Eaters bore, towards him. "Do you see this? It means I've sworn myself to something, to a cause, as a means to an end greater than my life. It means harassing a little mud blood and her traitorous boyfriend. It means committing Unforgivable magic. It means murder and torture and terror. This means I will follow the Dark Lord into a new future or die an early death. I won't go to Azkaban, Rabastan. Not because of that summons and not because of any future crimes. You don't have to worry, I'll die before I allow that to happen."

Rab took a small step away, for the first time in his life he was actually frightened of his brother. The intensity that he had always known was there shone through even stronger than ever, as well as his devotion to his new cause.

This is what you want to be a part of. This is what you're going to have to do to become the man you're supposed to be. Can you do it?

"I know what I wrote." His voice was quiet, but steady. "But I've made up my mind since then. I know where my loyalties lie."

The absence of a stammer in Rabastan's voice caused Rodolphus to, oddly enough, listen more closely to the words he spoke than ever before. Rodolphus hadn't said as much himself but he hoped Rabastan knew that the Mark meant he would kill even him if he had decided to stand between his Lord and the plans Voldemort had. Rodolphus would have even done it right there in the kitchen if he thought Rabastan was a threat. There was definite promise in what his brother said, however, although Rodolphus refused to let himself get his hopes up until he heard the words from his brother's mouth itself.

Maybe predatory instincts were to blame but before he posed his next question, Rodolphus corralled Rabastan unconsciously into a corner between the counter and the wall and put his hands on either side of his body as if to trap him there. "What did you decide?"

Rabastan knew this was it. He had wanted to wait, to get his mark before he told his brother about it. He had wanted to prove how serious he was, how committed. But if he didn't say it now Rodolphus might misunderstand.

"I want to be a d,"he could feel himself starting to stutter, and clamped down in the urge with a vice like grip. He was done with that. "Death Eater. I'm going to take the mark, if the Dark Lord will have me."

At first he thought the hesitation was meant to tease him, even though he knew those sorts of games were beyond Rabastan's realm of behavior, but none of it mattered the moment his little brother managed to get the words out. He still stared at him even after he'd said it though it became more and more difficult for him to keep his serious expression and before he could stop himself it broke down completely. Instead Rodolphus grinned and laughed out loud, tugging Rabastan against him in a hug. It was probably the first time in Rabastan's life that Rodolphus had ever done as much.

"That's brilliant!" He nearly shouted. "I've been waiting for you to say that! Waiting and waiting! Do you know that I've thought about it? Being out there with you? Bellatrix, you, and me all together? It would be perfect! We'd be the perfect trio. Bellatrix is ruthless and passionate, I can be the brute force, and you the level headed talent. We'll be perfect!"

Rabastan's heart flew into his chest the moment Rodolphus wrapped him in his arms. This was it. This is what he had been dying for his entire life. If he had ever had any doubts about his path this cleared them all. Rodolphus was proud of him, wanted him around. He would do anything it took to keep this from going away.

"Yeah, we really would!" He could see it now, going on missions with hs brother, side by side. They would be unstoppable. The Lestrange brothers! People would know who they were, they'd be linked by more than blood. It was everything he'd ever wanted. "Amycus said he's get me a meeting. I wanted to surprise you once I'd gotten the Mark."

The embrace was short lived but Rodolphus didn't see the point in letting things get too gay anyway so it didn't matter. Instead he held his little brother out in front of him by his shoulders nodding to his excitement he found mirrored in Rabastan's face and words. "I was worried." He admitted. "I was afraid after I read that journal entry that someday I would have to kill you but now! But this." Allowing his attentions to roam once more over his brother, Rodolphus reluctantly let go. They should be having a celebratory drink.

He'd offer one from his private bottle of firewhiskey if he didn't believe one shot would have Rabastan on his ass for the rest of the night.

"I think it's wise having someone you're not related to introduce you to the Dark Lord. You mustn't be intimidated. You're not much to look at so He'll probably be skeptical but I'll vouch for you and Bellatrix will and Amycus certainly. I probably haven't left the best legacy for you to come into but I'm sure you'll overcome that."

Rabastan couldn't stop grinning. This had to be the happiest he'd ever felt. He could still feel Rodolphus' hands clasped on his shoulders, and he savored it for as long as he possibly could. He felt strong, invincible. He carefully memorized the feeling, storing it away for the next time he would need it.

"I can't imagine anything you've left me could be bad." He felt intoxicated without having taken a sip of alcohol. "If I can come even close to you then I know that I'll be alright. We're the Lestrange brothers." Merlin, how incredible did that sound? The Lestrange brothers. Perfect.

"Yeah, well, we'll see about that." Rodolphus held a lot of regret when it came to his performance for the Dark Lord so far but had also decided it wasn't all bad since it meant he at least at the Dark Lord's attention. The next time he was sent out on a mission he would ace it and the improvement he made from this new one to the last would definitely impress his Lord.

Their Lord, he corrected himself.

"Rabastan, I want you to know something. You're the first person I'm going to tell this to and I'm telling you because now I trust you. You can't tell anyone else though until after I announce it." He didn't know when he'd make a public announcement, not for a long time more than likely, but some day.

Rabastan nodded eagerly and stepped closer to his brother.

"You can trust me with anything Rodolphus, and I swear I won't tell anyone. Not even Amycus."

In one evening his brother had given him a hug, admitted he trusted him, and was about to share a secret. He wondered if it was possible to die of happiness.

See? All you had to do was stop being yourself. Not so hard, is it?

Rodolphus sighed heavily and dragged a chair over from the small table that sat in the kitchen separate from the one in the dining room and sat down. "It's about Bellatrix. This is probably a surprise to you but you should know I'm in love with her. I'm going to marry her. I've been saving money for an engagement ring for some time now and once I've done something to stand out among the Death Eaters I'm going to approach her parents and ask for her hand."

He knew if he asked Bellatrix herself she would laugh in his face and, to put it lightly, say 'no' so going through her parents was definitely the best chance he had. The fact that Bellatrix would turn him down at all didn't seem to be an issue. At least not a pressing one. He loved her so much it was only a matter of time before she loved him back. "And then, once Our Lord has conquered the Wizarding World, we're going to settle down and have about ten kids. Since she'll bring a dowry I won't have to work either. It'll be perfect."

Rabastan wondered what would happen if he hugged his brother, but decided it would probably destroy the moment. He settled on a wide smile and a chair of his own.

"Rodolphus, that's great! I'm so happy for you!" He didn't know Bellatrix that well, but he knew that Rodolphus had feelings for her. The fact that she clearly loved him back was brilliant! "When are you going to ask her? Do you have a plan? Or is it going to be spontaneous?"

"I haven't figured out how I'm going to ask yet." Which was a total and complete lie. He'd thought about it and thought about it again and had come up with about ten different ways that he could do it. His current favorite involved a Mudblood captive and a grizzly version of the stereotypical engagement ring tucked cleverly into a little cake ruse.

"Of course you'll have to be my best man." There really wasn't anyone else he could turn to for that, he didn't have any friends and he knew Rabastan would do anything for the honor.
