We should forgive our enemies, but not before they are hanged.

The weekend Rodolphus had anticipated with his brother had not gone anywhere near what he had planned. That wasn't to say he had actually planned anything to begin with but he certainly hadn't anticipated Amycus being brought into the thick of things. He got along with the male Carrow well enough when it was just the two of them together but whenever Rabastan was added to the equation Amycus turned into an entirely different person. It was almost like Rabastan was Amycus' brother instead of his own and he couldn't fathom what it was about Amycus' personality that forced him to cling to siblings so fiercely.

It wasn't like he had planned to lure Rabastan home to murder him or anything. It wasn't like he hated the little bugger. He just wanted to toughen him up, to help turn him into the wizard he knew Rabastan was capable of. He'd seen his wand work, watched as he learned all manner of Dark Magic to impress him and although he'd never admit it, Rodolphus was impressed.

But that was beside the point, it was all beside the point. Amycus was the problem. Amycus was the one who had wedged himself into his life and then set off to have dinner with the woman Rodolphus planned to marry. The boast before a hasty exit still left him feeling sour and violent and proved to him that nothing about his relationship with Amycus was friendly any longer. He felt like an idiot for believing it in the first place, not that he truly cared about Amycus or their friendship, but he had been convinced it was real for at least one of them.

Now that both his parents were home, once Rabastan was in and Alecto had retired to her room for the evening, Rodolphus, out of sheer bitterness, prowled the house moving from door to door setting traps for Amycus whenever the little backstabber decided to return. He was going to see Bellatrix? He was going over to her house for dinner? Well the moment he stepped in through any of the doors upon his return he'd know the true meaning of en flambe once his clothes started on fire.

Maybe if Amycus begged he'd be benevolent enough to put him out.

Rabastan nodded eagerly and stepped closer to his brother.

"You can trust me with anything Rodolphus, and I swear I won't tell anyone. Not even Amycus."

In one evening his brother had given him a hug, admitted he trusted him, and was about to share a secret. He wondered if it was possible to die of happiness.

See? All you had to do was stop being yourself. Not so hard, is it?

Rodolphus sighed heavily and dragged a chair over from the small table that sat in the kitchen separate from the one in the dining room and sat down. "It's about Bellatrix. This is probably a surprise to you but you should know I'm in love with her. I'm going to marry her. I've been saving money for an engagement ring for some time now and once I've done something to stand out among the Death Eaters I'm going to approach her parents and ask for her hand."

He knew if he asked Bellatrix herself she would laugh in his face and, to put it lightly, say 'no' so going through her parents was definitely the best chance he had. The fact that Bellatrix would turn him down at all didn't seem to be an issue. At least not a pressing one. He loved her so much it was only a matter of time before she loved him back. "And then, once Our Lord has conquered the Wizarding World, we're going to settle down and have about ten kids. Since she'll bring a dowry I won't have to work either. It'll be perfect."

Rabastan wondered what would happen if he hugged his brother, but decided it would probably destroy the moment. He settled on a wide smile and a chair of his own.

"Rodolphus, that's great! I'm so happy for you!" He didn't know Bellatrix that well, but he knew that Rodolphus had feelings for her. The fact that she clearly loved him back was brilliant! "When are you going to ask her? Do you have a plan? Or is it going to be spontaneous?"

"I haven't figured out how I'm going to ask yet." Which was a total and complete lie. He'd thought about it and thought about it again and had come up with about ten different ways that he could do it. His current favorite involved a Mudblood captive and a grizzly version of the stereotypical engagement ring tucked cleverly into a little cake ruse.

"Of course you'll have to be my best man." There really wasn't anyone else he could turn to for that, he didn't have any friends and he knew Rabastan would do anything for the honor.
