Rating: PG?

As usual, Severus could be found in one of his usual spots, silencing charm in place and curtains mostly drawn about the four poster as he bent over a bit of parchment. The small, cramped writing was quickly adding up to a very powerful dark spell as he took notes, made observations, and worked out every little detail of said spell. It likely wouldn't get a proper testing, but it was always a favourite pasttime of Severus's to work on these little spells in the hopes of expanding his arsenal.

Several rolls of parchment littered the bed in heaps both at the foot and at the head, one or two even spilling over onto the floor. Severus had spent far too much time lately working on these spells, trying to get them just right for reasons unknown to him at the time. Events were unfolding in a less than favourable way and he'd been on edge around Lucius, so to counter the distraction and negative emotions, he'd immersed himself into his dark magic at the expense of everything else around him. Certainly he was still getting top marks in classes since that came easy to him, but he hadn't seen anyone he'd considered tolerable for a while now, holing himself away in his bunk, the library, or his favourite Potions classroom that rarely saw any use. He was barely looking forward to the weekend aside from perhaps the possibility of spending time with Narcissa, who he still kept a secret for her sake.

A loud curse reverberated within his four poster, masked by the silencing charm. His quill busily scratched out the last line of his spellwork, making smears that sable eyes glared holes through. He was already in a poor mood as he tried to salvage hours of work.

Dominic paused, eyeing Severus as if he were a wild beast. His friend had always been very snarky and it seemed as of late to have only increased tenfold, something that both interested and bored Dominic.

He kept his seat on the end of Severus' bed, hands momentarily giving up their work of removing his clothes piece by piece. It was only an attempt to appease Severus, as Dominic did not want to be booted just yet.

"What are you working on this time?" He asked.

With a long suffering sigh, Severus stopped his writing and looked back up at his dorm-mate, noting that Dominic had actually listened to him for once.

"The usual repertoire of horrible things, of course. The latest in a long line of spells that will eventually need testing. Have any subjects in mind?" Severus allowed the pull of his smile if only for a short time. There really was no reason for him to be so snarky, he realised. Aside from getting every aspect of this latest hex wrong, he was generally in a good mood and was actually somewhat looking forward to the weekend.

Dominic continued to grin, spirits too elevated to have been daunted by Severus' previously snide and snarky remarks. That was, after all just Severus being who he was, in a more open manner then usual and Dominic had grown accustomed to it.

"Malfoy, perhaps?" He said, shifting back and leaning against one of the opposing posts. Severus' spells could always prove to be a point of interest, they had small kinks to be worked out no doubt, but Dominic always had a good time when his mate let him in on the fun of practicing them.

And why shouldn't he? They could do quite a bit of damage.

The quirk of Severus's lips indicated his opinion on the matter of Lucius Malfoy, but he didn't give verbal acknowledgment of it. Instead, he ducked his head back down to continue writing, pulling out a fresh roll of parchment to start anew.

"Well aside from testing them, I also need to work out these little issues. Do you have any idea how frustrating it is to make up new spells like this?" His voice was muffled behind his scribbling as he continued onward, letting his inner monologue out.

"It's all I'm doing lately, and I imagine that this new group of Death Eaters or whatever other poncey name they fancy for themselves would probably greatly appreciate my efforts." When Severus realised what he'd said out loud, the quill stopped again and he looked up at his friend, eyebrows lowering in thought.

"Have you..." he began, but then turned away and gathered his thoughts before continuing, "You've heard the rumours, haven't you?"

Dominic almost burst out in loud bouts of laughter at the question. He was good with wandwork, spells came easily to him, but he had nothing on Severus in the department of creation.

The one time he had tried, well, it had not ended in the best.

That was forgotten, in light of what had slipped from Severus' lips, and Dominic found himself staring down at his mate, eyebrows raised up in an expression very similar to surprise.

Severus...

He wanted to join? It was an idiotic thing, yet that had very thought made Dominic giddy! His mate wanted in on it, he was taking it seriously.

"I've heard them." He said, shifting slightly in place to face the other better. "I've been trying to find out more about them, like where they're keeping that damned list that's supposed have their name on it."

"Have you heard anything of interest?" He asked abruptly, voice suddenly shifting into a whisper, as the sound of one of the nearby bunked students shifted in their Four Poster, groaning quietly.

"Hm... nothing much, really, but I imagine that they would want to keep low. I assume that you have some interest in them?" Always to the point, Severus was. He didn't hide the quirk of his lips nor the interest that shone behind his dark eyes.

Placing the quill down and resolving to continue with his spells at another time, he shifted on the bed, gathering up all of the stray parchment with a levitating spell and neatly putting them away in his trunk.

"You know," he started anew, a hand idly playing with the fabric of his duvet, "I'm certain that Lucius is involved. It wouldn't surprise me if the Carrows were in on it, as well. Always seemed to come off as a bit... eccentric, didn't they? I'm half-tempted to find out who else could be involved. Do some research and such." Severus looked up at his friend without any semblance of restraint nor did he lower his voice when their dorm mates rustled. He knew that he needn't hide his thoughts from Dominic, of all people. The other Slytherin was one of the few whom he could talk to about such things, despite his occasionally infuriating habits.

It seemed that Dominic would not answer, as he sat looking at the other Slytherin for a long moment, almost as if he were scrutinizing him. It was somehow odd to him, as well as elating, to know that Severus was interested in such matters.

After all, he had long ago befriended a Mudblood, seeming to accept her for what she was, as well as treating her as an equal. All strange things, when it boiled down to a certain point.

Slowly, his grin came back, and he nodded, agreeing. "Since the first moment I heard of them."

It was clear, as he ran his fingers absently through his dark hair, that Dominic was contemplating Severus' words, and what they meant. "Lucius, no doubt. That Rodolphus fellow seems to be in on something as well, but with how strange he is...it could be anything."

The Carrows. It was all the same thing that he had spoken with Narcissa about,...could he share that with Severus? Dominic was not sure if the Black wished to have there meetings branded about, they were after all secret.

"I've recently spoken with Alecto. She doesn't seem to know anything, but that brother of hers' is hardier to read by far." Shifting, he leaned to the side and tugged the curtains shut. It blocked out some of the light, however he still had enough to make out the other.

"To be honest," And he always could be with Severus. Dominic did not usually keep things from him, as they were friends. It was nice, to know they could share this. Narcissa was the only other person he had been quite so frank with as of late.

"I've been trying to do just that. I've meaning to get Amycus on his own, to try and get some information from him...see if he knows anything."

Severus let a slow silence pass over them as he considered everything that Dominic had said. Rodolphus is more than likely insane, so it wouldn't be impossible, he mused, a lopsided sort of smile slipping past his musings.

"Rodolphus... his obsession with insects has to mean something, though perhaps more along the lines of instability than dark magic. But I do think he's involved." His gaze lowered when the light dropped a bit, turning thoughts over his head before simply blurting anything out.

"Alecto and Amycus are a different story. I know that Amycus and Lucius had some sort of falling out, so for them to be working together... I don't imagine that makes for a pleasant work environment, if you know what I mean." The smile turned up into a smirk at the situation between the two seventh year boys. This was precisely why Severus tried as hard as he could to stay out of the drama of others. It was all so tiresome and caused so many more problems than anyone really needed.

"Insanity would likely aid him, if he wanted to get in close with such a group. Lestrange seems willing to do anything, and I can't see that hurting them."

While it was not as rare as a stumbling across a Sphinx, Severus' smile was still unusual enough to garner a bit of attention, and Dominic found himself staring at his friend, eyebrows raising higher up briefly, before he found himself smiling in turn.

"Not pleasant... but think that perhaps it might help, if I wanted to talk with him, and ask certain things, hmm?" If he did not get along with Lucius, there was all too likely to be underlining anger, annoyances and a weakness to exploit.

Unlike Severus, Dominic did not stop to consider his words from every angle, instead he spoke his mind just as quickly as the thoughts entered it.

"Would you be up to snooping a little?"
