The Greeks: Week 5

Previously, at The Greeks...

Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades established their courts in the Skies, the Seas, and the Underworld. Zeus took Metis as his wife and queen, and held an elaborate party, where Poseidon danced with Amphitrite, and Hades met Leuke. Informed of a prophecy that a son of Metis would overthrow him, Zeus rid himself of her, and took Themis as his second wife. But his marriage to Themis has thus far only resulted in daughters, leaving the king questioning his choice, even as his brothers have had successful pursuits of their own. Besotted with Leuke, Hades brought her to the Underworld, and has showered her with lavish gifts.

This week's (not so "mini") synopsis: Growing wary of his marriage to Themis, who has not yet given him a son, Zeus seeks an annulment. He gives birth to Athena, and has liaisons with Eurynome and Mnemosyne, before turning his eyes away from the Titanesses, and toward a goddess: his sister. Demeter bears him Kore/Persephone, and Athena competes with Poseidon for the patronage of Athens.

Not one to be left behind in the quest for conquests, Poseidon pursues Khione, who bears him Eumolpos; she throws baby into ocean for Poseidon to take care of him.

The tragic death of Leuke leaves the King of the Underworld in mourning. Hades transforms her into a poplar tree, and has orchards planted near his palace.
